Jon Favreau & Robert Downey Talk Iron Man

First off, to you Iron Man fans (of which I am one), tell me the guy on the left doesn’t make a great Tony Stark.
Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favreau discuss a few different topics in a promotional clip for the DVD series Dinner for Five which was an IFC series that followed Favreau and a variety of friends to different restaurants and recorded their very casual conversations. I’ve never seen the show myself, but what is of interest is that they kick off their conversation by talking about Iron Man, which they just wrapped filming on at the point the interview takes place.

They shot the movie in approximately 75 days, on schedule.

Robert Downey Jr says that Wierd Science, Chaplin and Iron Man feel like the three “real” movies he’s done in 30 years. According to RDJ, Iron Man had elements of both of those, but we don’t get to hear exactly what he means by that because Favreau breaks in (laughing) with a comment about promoting the film as Chaplin meets Weird Science, and wouldn’t that be great for ticket sales.
Favreau talks about how early on in the process (prior to casting) he learned that Marvel doesn’t look at their films as movies, but as franchises, and they consider the superhero to be the star. He took the approach that Tony Stark is the actual star of the movie.

Iron Man opens in May 2008.
