I realize that filming remakes of well known, beloved, or cult films gives Hollywood the warm fuzzy feeling of guaranteed profit… but can you believe a remake of Revenge of the Nerds? (Your humble writer shakes his head in bewilderment)
What in the world is the logic here? Aren’t there enough teen comedies out there? Is it too difficult to come up with a plot for one of these things?! In it’s way, the original Revenge of the Nerds is a classic with a very quirky personality, which would be best left alone.
If you’re going to remake something, remake something that was obscure or not that great to begin with. Oceans 11 was a good example of this… after seeing the remake (which I really enjoyed) I went back and watched the original, which was weak at best.
I made the prediction to friends quite a while back, and I’ll document it here: I’m eagerly awaiting the remake of Casablanca. They’ll probably get a first time movie director who’s previous experience is limited to music videos and TV commercial.
You just wait and see.

That’s Hollywood for you — always afraid to take even the smallest of risks. I never saw Revenge of the Nerds, but remaking it doesn’t even seem like a good idea on paper. It’s kind of like remaking Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
As for the Casablanca remake, I’m speechless. There are rumors that the whole project has been scrapped, but who knows for sure? If it does happen, I’m sure you’ll turn out to be absolutely right about the “wet behind the ears” director being hired for it. Back in the day, only the “great ones” would direct the classic movies. The problem is, in this day and age, there aren’t very many “great” directors or classic movies. The typical movie these days is either a retread of an older (and usually better) idea, or it doesn’t get the funding and/or distribution it needs, so most of us never get to see it.

Ok, I just checked that article. That absolutely HAD to be a joke/BS rumor. I googled that and I did see more sites with the news… then again, why am I surprised?
I guess it’s even beyond what I imagined could happen to this film…

Supposedly, the original source of the rumor was Globe Magazine, which doesn’t strike me as the most reputable rag on the street. In other words, you are wise to be skeptical. Still, the odds of Bennifer ever getting together on-screen anytime soon are slim, I would think. Unless, of course, they get lots of money to do it, and we all know studio heads are smarter than that, don’t we? :-S

I quite enjoyed Revenge Of The Nerds as a youngster, but the prospect of a remake does seem particularly baffling.
I am reminded, via some nostalgic device what sends pop culture references into my skull in place of, y’know, real stuff, of the scene in the simpsons when the studio head finds a script sitting on his desk. “Revenge Of The Nerds 5?” he then tosses the script out of the window behind him. “Get shooting boys!”
Anyway, i don’t know how well ROTN would translate to nowadays times. I mean, sure, we’re all the anti-PC in the world apparently, what with those films about how funny mentally ill folks are and whatn ot, but i still think the excessive racism and homophobia which forms the basis of many of the film’s potshots would be deemed highly offensive these days.
Maybe if they changed the asian to a schizophrenic. Cause, hey man, it’s funny when they do the yelling and then they stop yelling and act all corny. Ha!
Alos, i could be wrong, even if it does seem, admittedly, somewhat far-fetched, but i think Casablance was indeed the subject of a remake already, of the TV movie variety. Or maybe it was a show based on it. There was definately something, though, is what The Duke thinks.
Your memory serves you well, Duke. According to IMDB, there is an extra feature on the Casablanca DVD for a TV pilot from 1955. Judging by the user comments, I would have to assume it was universally panned, and should be avoided at all costs. That should be a BIG hint for anyone who is thinking about a remake. (And no, 60 years is NOT long enough to wait to remake it!)
