Green Lantern... a comedy??
Written on July 12, 2004 by Vic Holtreman
Man oh man oh man... if this isn't the reason for the existence of ScreenRant.com, I don't know what is...
From CBR:
"Not only is the planned "Green Lantern" movie featuring the Kyle Raynor Green Lantern character, but the executive in charge of making the Green Lantern movie wants to make it a comedy. The choice for the ring bearer?"
"Jack Black."
Jack Black? Green Lantern a COMEDY? Now admittedly I don't follow the comic book, but apparently Kyle Raynor is a rather controversial Green Lantern. Why not go with the well-established Hal Jordan or even John Stewart (currently GL on Cartoon Network's very popular Justice League).
Can someone please explain to me why DC seems to be genetically incapable of getting their act together and producing decent superhero movies from their great archive of characters, while Marvel pumps out one killer movie after another?
Oy, it makes my head hurt...

If the movie ended up being self-deprecating, I could appreciate that, but the idea of a comedy doesn't make sense for that subject matter. Mystery Men showed that comedic superheroes aren't the best idea. Still, Jack Black hasn't always done comedic roles. If you ever saw him in The Jackal, that was not extremely comedic at all. But the bottom line is that butchering the classic comic characters with boneheaded ideas seems to be the trend these days.
Brian
Green Lantern is not a self-deprecating kind of character. Well, at least not the GL I'm familiar with.
Vic
Vic's childhood memories... trample, trample, trample...
;-)
Brian
I have really got to go see Anchorman. :-)

I am a HUGE Green Lantern fan and I have been waiting for a GL movie for years now! I love Jack Black but if they make this movie a comedy with him in it I swear to god I will show up at DC's front door banging on it and screaming at them! This had better be a rumor/hoax. I think I'm going to be sick!
This early on, nothing is carved in stone. But since it's Warner Brothers, I wouldn't hold my breath for a good superhero movie.
The way you feel about Green Lantern is how I feel about the upcoming Iron Man movie...
Vic
Now i have been a comic book fan since i can remember. And Green Lantern has always been my favorite character, for the simple reason in that he can do anything he can think of, his mind is his limit. Now they are going to have Jack Black in a comedy of this superhero????? that is awful, and i agree with the commenet about DC being awful at making movies, while Marvel is churning out hit after hit.
to me it sounds like a publicity grab, to see IF us fans are ready for a GL movie at all. BUT.... if you really want to know what it will probably look like (with a huge SFX budget of course) download Heat vision and Jack. A comedic hero pilot that FOX (stupidly) rejected. And there you go
I'm more surprised that see as how you are all super fan's, no one mentioned that it's HAL JORDAN, not HAL GORDON! (HJ being the coolest GL of them all too!)
Jack Black? uh...no. Kyle Rayner? Hal Jordan would make for a classier movie. It's like making a new Superman Movie based on that fiasco in the 90's when they changed his costume!
Doh! Oh man, I don't know where my brain went on that one... I've corrected it to read "Jordan".
Yeesh. Thanks for pointing that out. :-)
Vic
Kyle Raynor would be a good choice. If only because he used the ring to the full extent of it's abilities. The only reason why he's controversial is because when they killed HJ (you have to catch up on the Parallax story line) It peeved a lot of people off.
Kyle Raynor is also a bad choice, because if you took a poll, he will always come after hal jordan in the diehard mainstays of fanboys. Not to mention you'd have to cover the backstory as to demons he's fighting since taking over the ring from Jordan and everything else.
As for jon stewart, why not use Guy Gardner or even golden age Gl, Alan Scott? They're going with the choice now, beacuse this is what their target audience knows. I personally don't care if it's Jordan or Raynor. Just get the casting right. Don't screw it up. Much like Affleck and Daredevil.
you think WB would step up since they kind of own DC. I mean come on Marvel created a department specifically for movies. Might as well face ladies and gent's. Smallville is about as close to a Superhero movie/idea/tv show that we're going to get from Dc/WB.
I think WB is so afraid to screw up a potential franchise that they're suffering from deer-in-the-headlights syndrome.
Vic
Oh goody, I can already see Jack Black (in character, of course) using the ring for "natural male enhancement". I'm not a GL fan, but I agree that this is absurd. I could see JB playing the Joker in a Batman movie, but that would mean dishonoring the first Tim Burton effort. Let's just ban JB from ANY comic book movie...
You know I thought about something similar to your use of the ring earlier but refrained from posting it. :-)
Vic
Jack Black would make a better Ralph Hinkley (aka The Greatest American Hero tv series).
Now I *really* hate remakes, but I could totally picture him playing that role. :-)
Vic
Green Lantern is my FAVORITE of all superheroes. he's what got me into comics in the first place. I agree with what Joey said about the target audience being more familiar with Kyle. And if Raynor were chosen, then chances are, the movie would take on a more comedic approach, as opposed to being more of a "heroic" movie with Jordan.
But has anyone else thought about a movie based on the "Kingdon Come" mini-series? I know it will NEVER happen(due to a lot of backstory constraints, and probablly a HUGE budget), but just imagine how cool it could be...
DarrOn
Come on. Jack Black. If you're gonna do Green Lantern and it's gonna be Kyle Rayner, why not cast that Jake Gyllenhaal kid from Donnie Darko and certainly it shouldn't be a comdey.
now i don't know about DC/WB not being able to put together a decent movie. given that Superman will probably be a disaster, i have to admit, they're doing a HELLUVA job with Batman Begins. so, if there's hope for the Dark Knight, maybe in the future they'll be some for GL.
jb has dome some serious movies and in my opinion is one hell of an actor. i dont know how well he can pull of a green lantern. but posted earlier he would make a good guy gardner. dont know about the others
Get someone like Richard Donner back in. His vision of Superman, in my opinion, remains THE best superhero movie to date. Many of the others have done great since - DC still has yet to put out another decent one since Tim Burton's Batman - however Superman is and always will be a mainstream classic.
Could have been worse. Jim Carrey for instance!
Eric, good point about Batman Begins. Who knows? Maybe it's the start of a trend.
I don't recall if there were quite this many birth pains when it came to the upcoming Batman flick... Superman 5 has been in development hell far longer I believe.
Vic
I've been a fan of GL since the Gil Kane days. Certainly one of my early favorites.
But Jack Black as a cartoonist/artist that finds a "magic ring" could make a hilarious comedy.
I say make Jack Black the artist on the Green Lantern book, or the president of the GL fan club. He's the guy who rants on message boards about how DC is messing up their heroes. Super die-hard fanboy. Then he gets the ring. Like every overweight fan who's made the choice to wear spandex to a convention -- Jack thinks he knows how a hero is supposed to act. Of course, that doesn't fit the real world.
If they went that sort of route, I could enjoy the comedy and not feel the character was trampled on. Of course, if successful it would kill the chance of a serious GL movie anyway.
Just a thought. Yours?
Tad,
That could be funny, but I envision that as more of a fan-made movie or something that would show up on ifilm.com.
Vic
... Yeah, DC. Cast one of the ugliest actors in show biz as one of the arguably most attractive men in comics. Way to go.
I'm not a HUGE GL fan, and even *I* am pissed off. This sounds worse than CATWOMAN.
Chris,
Let's keep in mind that this is very early in the game, and that they could go in a completely different direction.
Remember when Nicholas Cage was going to be Superman? :-)
Vic
to me, Black Jack with green lantern supepowers = Guy Gardner. How come noone sees that?
ACtually, if Kyle Rayner was chosen to be the basis of the GL movie, I wouldn't be surprised if Jake Gylenhall's name was mentioned. I know he was talked about for Superman(as well as Spider-Man), but Jake actually LOOKS like Ryner, just not as buff.
As far as Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner...I don't know. That'd be a tough one.

From what I've heard the movie industry is doing bad because people download movies for free. I find that very hard to believe, I think the movie industry is doing bad because of bad movies. And how casting Jack Black as the Green Lantern is gonna make superhero movies any better is hard for me to believe. Hey WB while you're at it why don't you cast Carrot Top as Superman?
Not that I download movies of course... but hyptothetically speaking I would say that this would be equitable:
Stop showing commercials in movie theaters when I've paid $9 for the privilege and then I'll stop downloading movies.
Since I have Netflix, I watch as many as I want for a flat fee, so I have no desire to download. Doesn't stop movie theater commercials from aggravating the heck out of me though.
Vic
I disagree with the idea of Jack Black as a superhero period.
If Warner make this movie, I will go to the usa and KILL every person who participated in the making of this film... I'm the one true green lantern fan, that's why if they make a shitty adaptation of my GOD i must burn 'em
Your wrong Joe, Jack Black should play Wonder Boy in a major motion picture :) Green Lantern? Jeez I hope not, but I'll go see it and feel depressed afterwards anyway. Im still traumatized from the Hulk.
Pray that they stop looking for comic book directors in Hong Kong!! (they probably work for pennies on the dollar)
Hey, a "Wonder Twins" movie is going to be made... why don't they put Jack in that instead?
Vic
WHY GOD WHY ?!?! Lets have the WB turn the godfather in to a Zany 30 min weekly sitcom ? Why not add Brittnay Spears as the Charmmed ones mystery 5th sister ? Why not drug test every one at the WB and get the help they realy need.
Making Green Lantern a comedy is a disrespect with his fans and with a superhero that exists since 1940 and has never had a decent film that lives up to his rich story. I believe if they make Green Lantern a comedy nobody will look at this superhero seriously anymore and the chance of making an eye candy science fiction movie with lots of special effects and lots of action will be lost forever.
look's like someone has managed to cheese the Uk off, I hear there's some Regualar Joe making an non official trailer of John Stewart's GL. think he's a bit upset, turning the GL into a comedy.
Jack Black is not green lantern. Can you see him in tights? Yick!
A GL movie (done properly as in not a comedy) could put DC/WB in the running with Marvel.
Why not have Hal and Kyle in the movie?? Passing the torch kinda deal.
