Director George Lucas’ dark 1971 SF movie THX 1138 will be re-released in theaters on Sept. 10 in a new director’s cut, followed on Sept. 14 by a two-disc collector’s-edition DVD.
I’m just wondering if the original print of this film was kept away from George… surely he would not allow this to be released without updating the special effects, would he?
Why does this film get the respect of not being altered while the original Star Wars films will never be seen in their original form again? Like I said, it must have been out of George Lucas’ control. I can’t think of another reason.

Either that, or Lucas couldn’t be bothered to tinker with something that wasn’t quite as near and dear to his heart…

He actually made quite a few changes to the Director’s Cut of THX 1138. I still haven’t seen them, so I won’t judge just now.
