I just read today that Columbia TriStar has released a two-disc “ultimate edition” of Luc Besson?s awesome sci-fi adventure. This is one of my favorite movies, but when the heck are the studios going to stop milking movies via multiple DVD releases? Oh wait, I can answer that… probably NEVER.
It can be a curse to be an early adopter of new tech… I’ve had a DVD player since way back in 1999, and this movie was one of the first ones I added to my collection. Even in it’s original DVD release it’s one of those movies you use to show off your big-screen-surround-sound system. I flirted with the idea of purchasing the Superbit version a year or so ago, more out of curiousity about the format than anything else, but now ANOTHER version of this flick? Ugh.

I see this happen again and again, and it’s the reason that I now wait 6 months to a year after the release of a DVD I’d like to purchase before I lay down my cash. Within that period it’s almost certain that a “ultimate” version of said DVD will be released. Having said that, I was very pleased to see the multi-version release of Spiderman 2 recently. Personally I think that’s the way to go: Release the basic, special edition, and Superbit versions all at once and let the consumer decide which one they want.
Maybe one of you can knows what the current record is for DVD rereleases? From memory I can’t think one that has had more versions than Army of Darkness, which I believe has five

Hate to burst your bubble Vic, but they are double-dipping Spider-Man 2 as well
IMHO double-dipping is only ok if it is announced prior to the first dip. Like what New Line did with LOTR - announce the lite version as well as the extended version to arrive months later. This is the only fair way to do business. Anything else and the consumer feels cheated.
Wow, I’m not sure if that’s even WORSE. “Hey here are all these great versions to choose from, aren’t we nice?”
Then six months later they STILL come out with another version??
Yeesh.
Vic
 I live with a spouse who is vulnerable to this marketing ploy. Grrr…. (not to the spouse, but to the marketers) Personally, I don’t care for alternate endings, behind the scenes, over anylizing crapola about movies. I just want to see the movie. It takes the magic out of it for me to see how they made the monster and it REALLY puts me off to see how much money they spent making the stupid monster. Just tell your story and go on with your life.
And get the heck out of my pocketbook…
The problem with the special features is you watch them once, and you’re done.
That’s why I’ve been curious about the Superbit format, but not enough to plunk down my cash for one of those DVDs. Especially with some of the odd choices they’ve made for titles they’ve made available in that format.
