Yes, I know trailers for upcoming films can be misleading, but dammit, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow just looks like it could be the coolest movie to come down the pike since, well, Lord of the Rings. Ok, so that’s not so long ago, but you get my drift…
I don’t generally subscribe to the idea that cool special effects can carry a film, but the visuals in this movie look absolutely stunning. It’s not just the production design… the cinematography is gorgeous with the use of subdued tones and soft lighting that reminds me of the great films of the 40’s. If the plot and acting in this movie are even just average, it’s going to make a TON of money, and at this point I’m really looking forward to it.

For whatever reason, I wasn’t extremely impressed with the trailer. I guess I’m not into 40’s-style settings. Plus, the cast is a little iffy. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow aren’t exactly superstars. I don’t even like Gwyneth Paltrow’s acting ability, Oscar or no. And for the past several years, Angelina Jolie’s presence in a movie has been the kiss of death. I’m sure you’re right, it will probably make a ton of initial curiosity money, but I’ll be surprised if it’s all that good.

We shall see…. I think this film is being done with a bit of a campy angle, so it could work.

All i can think of when i see this is Rocketeer.
Harry Knowles of The Harry Knowles Digest (www.aintitcool.com) has been yacking about this for much of the last 6 months, and certainly it LOOKS good, but so do lots of things, and some of them suck a whole lot (like Paris Hilton, then).
The digital tomfoolery what went on is intriguing, for sure, and i’ll definately see it, but i get the feeling it might be a case of all style not a tiny shred of the substance. Which is fine for a time, but tends to drag eventually. Like, in fact, Paris Hilton.
LOL. What an amazing analogy…
You’ll note that my anticipatory drooling has to do with the visuals, and not the story. Sometimes a movie can be so visually impressive that even I will forgive it’s weaknesses in other areas.
Recent example: The Chronicles of Riddick. Pretty much a check-your-brain-at-the-door movie, but the production design was so inventive that I forgave it for most everything else.
