J. Michael Straczynski, creator of the Sci Fi series Babylon 5, stated during a panel at Wizard World in Philadelphia that he would love to develop a Star Trek series, and did in fact pitch an idea to Paramount.
Straczynski said:
“They’re driving that franchise into the ground because they don’t understand what it is,”
Straczynski, who is a big fan of the original (classic) Star Trek series also said that Parmount’s reply was that they wanted Trek to sit on the shelf for a couple of years. In reference to that, he said:
“When the door is open again, I’ll be there.”
What are the chances Paramount will let him in the door?

Interesting idea… Babylon 5 and Star Trek are very different animals, but Straczynski might be the “kick in the pants” Star Trek needs after all the previous ratings flops. The only negative thing I’ve read about him is that he’s not very good at writing dialogue, but that’s only an issue if he chooses to write the scripts himself.
Let’s also not forget… TOS was a ratings flop when it first aired on TV. It would be years before it would gain its cult following. With the possible exception of TNG, it seems like all the Star Trek series came along too early or too late for the public to be really interested. (Another exception would be the abysmal Voyager, which shouldn’t have aired in the first place.)
