“According to an interview with David Duchovny, a sequel to THE X-FILES movie is “definitely happening.” The Moviehole website reports straight from the actor’s mouth that franchise creator Chris Carter has an idea for the second X-FILES movie and Duchovny expects to don his FBI agent’s suit again sometime in the next year. ”
This has got to be the biggest “who cares”-snoozer-news-disguising-as-a-”big deal” that I’ve seen in a long time. Talk about beating the proverbial dead horse.
Chris Carter ran the TV show into the ground by taking the concept of red herrings to a level never seen before or since. Twists and unexpected turns in the plot are great, but after a while one starts to feel like someone is yanking their chain one time too many. At some point the story has to deliver something.
Finally the first X-Files movie came out, and everyone was psyched, thinking that finally everything would be brought to a clear conclusion. Nope, sorry… just more “huh?” factor.
Is the show even still on? Does anyone even still watch it? I think they had better keep the budget on this film looooooooooow if they want any sort of profit on it.
I personally could not care less about this film, but I thought somebody ought to say it.

The show is no longer on the air (it was cancelled in 2002), but people can still watch it in syndication on channels like WGN. I’m sure this is a very big deal for Duchovny. Other than The X-Files, he hasn’t had much of an acting career.
As we all know, many actors run off their mouths more than they should, so until a studio (presumably Fox) makes the announcement, I’ll have to reserve judgment. I can’t imagine why a studio would want to greenlight a sequel to a movie that wasn’t a huge blockbuster ($83 mil in the US versus $66 mil budget, per IMDB). The show is cancelled; the public interest is not there anymore. Why make another movie about it now? It doesn’t make sense.
I really enjoyed the first two seasons of The X-Files. They had a cool kind of creepy-yet-intruguing vibe that kept me watching. As the seasons dragged on, though, the storylines felt regurgitated, and as you pointed out, Vic, the number and content of the red herrings just got to be ridiculous. By the time the first movie came out, I had totally lost interest; I didn’t even see the movie.
I have no interest in seeing this sequel, assuming it does happen. Other than hardcore fans, I doubt whether anyone else will either. Any studio that greenlights this will be making a mistake, but I have faith that the Hollywood bigwigs will be able to step up to the plate and make some really moronic decisions.
