I’m freaking out just a little bit here: Wynona Rider has been cast as Spock’s mother Amanda Grayson in the Star Trek movie.
Why am I freaked? Because she’s a well-known actress that will pull me out of the movie? Sorry, that’s not it: It’s because she’s one of those actresses that appeared on the scene almost 20 years ago and who I (and most other guys) always considered to be very hot. And now, at only 36, she’s going to play Spock’s mother?
Ouch.

Spock’s mother was played by actress Jane Wyatt in the original series as well as in the Star Trek movies featuring the original cast. Since Abrams’ intent is to bring new fans to the franchise, if you don’t know anything about the character here you go: She is a human from Earth who married Sarek, a Vulcan ambassador to Earth. She gave birth to Spock, who is half-human and half-Vulcan. His human half caused him to struggle with his emotions more than the typical Vulcan as he was growing up.
Spock’s entry into Starfleet Academy caused a rift between him and his father that lasted many years, only resolved in an episode of the original series where Spock saved his father’s life. On a side note, in the not so great Star Trek V they introduced a character that was Spock’s brother, who discarded the Vulcan philosophy of control over emotions.
Steve, one of our regular readers nailed it earlier this morning before the news came out about Wynona by saying that he thought that Abrams would be adding some big name actors to do cameos in the film.

Sarek would far outlive a human wife (or wives). What is more logical–to marry an old earth prune or a young earth tart?
Maybe they’ll just age her about a decade using makeup.

Also about the age discrepancy with Spocks mom..
One thing we have to keep in mind is that Spock dosnt look his age. This is Star Trek cannon. The Spock in the first episodes of TOS is APROX, 147 years old. I don’t remember the episode but this is brought up by Kirk and McKoy. Spock relents and tell them vaguely that vulcans live to be around 400 years old and don’t age the same as humans.
“I’m pretty sure Bones makes a remark about that green demon blood of his”. Haha

even though we have Zac Quiento as Spock he’s playing a Spock that could be around 130 years old.
I’m pretty sure that there going to use Wynnonas character in some kind of flashback storyline…and that Spocks age and Vulcans age in general will be a focal point in the film.
I actually checked a Trek timeline on another site and Spock is about the same age as the other characters.

I’ve always wanted Winona to be involved with Star Trek in some form or fashion, and now she is! I always wanted her to be a captain of a starship (in the 24th century epoch) in her own movie series, but this-being Spock’s momma-is just as good.
I can’t wait to see this movie now, and if the Fates spare my life, hopefully I will see it.
steve, I could be wrong but i think the episode where Spock mentions the Vulcan aging process is Amok Time the Pon Farr episode .
If not , maybe it was journey to Babel .

Also Neville, I agree that Wynonna is hot, and I wish she was a starfleet crewmember rather than Spocks mammy.
