1st Blu-ray Hi-Def DVD Movie... You Won't Believe It
Written on November 19, 2005 by Vic HoltremanSony has produced the first full length feature film on the new Blu-ray HD-DVD format. What film would rate such an auspicious event?
Heck, I don't know... there are so many films to choose from. I understand that they would choose a movie they've distributed, and that would include such movies as Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Black Hawk Down, Men in Black, or even the perennial show-off-your-home-theater-DVD: The Fifth Element.
So what did they choose?
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle
Somebody smack me around and wake me up. Please. Seriously.
I can't wait for the next Blu-ray to hit the street... Maybe Universal Soldier: The Return?
Yeesh.

LOL... what were they thinking?
Such a lousy movie choice for their new format suggests to me that they're not very serious about the new format. It almost seems like they're deliberately throwing it to the wolves so it will die a quick death.

Yikes... this is about as smart as many of their PSP movie choices.
Christmas with the Cranks?
Hitch?
Seriously?
Yup, reminds me of the selection method they used for their Superbit DVDs...

This is an internal check-disc. It will be used by manufacturers to evaluate how their hardware stands up to Blu-Ray technical standards (audio/video playback and stability, navigation) in 'real world' use. It is not for retail sale or general distribution; actual retail discs won't be appearing for quite some time. Any full-motion movie-length video would have done the trick, but Charlie's Angels 2 makes an excellent technical candidate. It is already available in HD from the CTS archive with subtitles and multichannel sound, and contains rapid-motion, low level detail, textures and colors that would be a good test of the format's and any hardware's video playback capabilities. This was probably the cheapest and easiest ways of producing such a test disc.
Adam,
Thanks so much for chiming in with some background on the situation. :D
I was not aware that it was already available in HD, but again, that speaks to my point about movie selection when there are so many films to choose from. I suppose it's possible that the folks who make these decisions havea sense of humor. 8)
