Animated secret agent Sterling Archer is going from spy-smasher to grill-master when FX’s hit animated comedy Archer crosses over with Fox’s Emmy-nominated cartoon Bob’s Burgers.

In what is described as a "Bourne Identity-type plotline," Archer will start off flipping burgers as the morose Bob Belcher, unaware of his true identity. FX has yet to release the date of when the crossover episode of Archer will air, but the episode has been filmed.

The upcoming crossover episode of Archer was the idea of series creator Adam Reed. Though Bob’s creator Loren Bouchard (who also co-created Home Movies and produced Dr. Katz) was cool with the idea, he stayed out of the creative process, entrusting it to Reed. The episode will also feature Bob’s wife Linda (voiced by John Roberts), but the kids won’t be in it, mostly due to budget restriction.

If you’re a fan of both of these hilarious cartoons, you’ll recognize one big common denominator between the two - the gruff comedic voice talent of H. Jon Benjamin, who voices both Bob and Archer. Since the swiggly-line days of Comedy Central’s Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, Benjamin has been an animated staple, lending his hilariously monotoned vocals to such comical mature cartoons as Adult Swim’s Home Movies (as the lovable Coach McGuirk) and more recently on Fox’s Family Guy (as Carl).

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Benjamin openly chatted about what the big crossover episode of Archer will contain, saying:

"['Archer' creator Adam Reed] really likes 'Bob’s Burgers,' and the fourth season has a 'Bob’s Burgers' tie-in, which is really bizarre. It’s like a 'Bourne Identity'-type plotline. It starts off with Archer as Bob, making hamburgers, but he doesn’t know that he’s Archer. He’s at the restaurant and these, like, I think Russian thugs come in, and Bob dispatches them expertly. And then he’s like, What just happened? How did I do that? So he has to try to figure out why he’s so good at killing people. "

Benjamin also touched upon how the completely different visual animation styles of the two shows will believably blend and how some fans might react to the two characters identical sounding voices:

"[The episode will be] 'Archer'-style animation, but with all the accoutrements and characteristics of the ['Bob’s'] characters. It is a little weird, because you have to be a fan of both to understand it. But you don’t have to know about 'Bob’s Burgers' to enjoy it.

"It’s seems like kind of a 50-50: 50 percent of people are like, ‘You suck, you use the same voice,’ and 50 percent of people are like, ‘It’s amazing how different they are!’ And I really can’t speak to either opinion. "

Exciting as all this is, cartoons crossovers are nothing new. It was somewhat typical back in the late 80s and 90s and is slowly making a 21st century comeback. We all remember how the Jetsons met the Flintstones in the epic TV movie and we most certainly remember the groundbreaking 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit - a film that not only combined live-action with animation, but is also the only time in animation history in which both Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny appeared on screen together.
