A new photo from the set of Aquaman has been posted online, showing Arthur Curry and Mera together for the first time. Jason Momoa made his brief debut as Aquaman – alongside Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, in short video clips – in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice last year. He will be reprising his role in Snyder’s Justice League later this year when the world’s finest heroes unite for the first time to fight the villain Steppenwolf.
In addition to introducing the new superheroes, Justice League will also briefly establish their backgrounds in the DC Extended Universe. That includes the city of Atlantis. We already know that few Aquaman supporting characters, such as Mera (Amber Heard) and Nuidis Vulko (Willem Dafoe), will be making an appearance in the ensemble film. Then they will all reunite next year for James Wan’s Aquaman movie, which has been reported as being a swashbuckling adventure film.
Aquaman is currently shooting in Australia, one of the many tropical locations the filmmakers are planning on filming at, and a new set photo has been posted online showing Arthur and Mera together for the first time – at least that we know of. The photo was taken on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, on May 26, on what appears to be a small dock, which could very well be another shot of Arthur’s hometown, Amnesty Bay. Take a look below.
This photo is the latest in a series of set photos that have been posted online. Last week, Wan released the first photo of Mera in costume from the movie, to which Heard responded with her own photo taken on the first day of filming. Both images highlighted Mera’s luminous costume, which the photo above also does quite well. What’s interesting, though, is that in the set photo, Momoa isn’t in his Aquaman costume, which could mean one of many things, such as Mera asking Arthur to come back to Atlantis.
With production well underway at this stage, casting and filming have been advancing rapidly. We recently learned that child actor Otis Dhanji will be playing a young Arthur Curry, while Ludi Lin is playing Murk, Dolph Lundgren is King Nereus, Patrick Wilson is Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing the villain Black Manta, and Michael Beach might be playing Manta’s father, who, in one version of the character’s origin story becomes the impetus for Manta’s blood feud with Aquaman. There is still quite a bit that we don’t know, but with all of the recent news surrounding the DCEU, it’s good to see that at least Aquaman is progressing smoothly.
