One of the more maligned superheros in the DC Universe, Aquaman has his work cut out for him in proving he can carry a movie on his own, unlike his more well-respected teammates in the Justice League. With the imposing Jason Momoa in the lead role and not taking any guff, the upcoming Aquaman solo film from Furious 7 director James Wan might just do the job.
Aquaman’s solo outing is not planned for release until 2018, but like at least one other DC superhero destined for her own movie, he will be making his first appearance in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Rumors are already swirling about who the King of Atlantis will face when he’s no longer playing second fiddle to DC’s two heaviest hitters, though, and it may be someone close to home.
JoBlo is reporting that Aquaman’s big on-screen nemesis is likely to end up being Aquaman’s half-brother Ocean Master, a.k.a. Orm Curry or, as he preferred to be called, Orm Marius. This would set up a sibling rivalry as the two of them fought for control of Atlantis. One can imagine the fate of the entire world would somehow hang in the balance as well, as it tends to go with that sort of thing.
Aquaman won’t fight his intra-family feud alone, though. He will be joined by his queen, Mera. According to JoBlo, Mera will be no shrinking violet:
“Mera will be a force to be reckoned with and will share the screen with Aquaman in very much the same way that Max and Furiosa did in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, making her every bit a hero of the film (and the DCEU) as the titular character.”
If that’s really the case, expect the same Internet commenters who were so vocally offended by a strong female character in Fury Road to once again take to the message boards and complain about Aquaman being sidelined. The studio is also rumored to be pursuing a “non-white” actress for the role, which will rankle those commenters even further.
If we were to guess which supporting characters would be in an Aquaman movie then these two are the obvious ones, but at this point Aquaman is far enough in the future and early enough in the development process that this is all still rumor. Mera might get a diminished role in the final draft of the script, or Ocean Master might be replaced by a villain who doesn’t sound like the brand name of boat.
Apologies to Jason Momoa for that last joke.
