As we prepare to see a live-action Aquaman grace the big screen for the first time (however briefly) in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - the next installment in what director Zack Snyder has referred to as the DC Extended Universe - actor Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) has provided some hints about how the superhero will be portrayed in upcoming DC movies.

In the first look at Momoa's Aquaman (released by Snyder online), the photo contained dark and subdued colors and featured a tatted, dreadlock version of the hero. With the words “unite the seven” across the image, fans theorized that the seven is a reference to the forming of the Justice League; after all, Momoa will be returning as Aquaman when Snyder's Justice League - Part 1 comes out in 2017.

However, Aquaman's costume (or, at least, one of them) might not buck tradition as much as previously thought. Momoa, speaking during an interview with The Robot’s Voice, mentioned that the superhero onscreen look might bear a closer resemblance to his famous comic book counterpart than expected, during a future DC movie appearance:

“Well, there might be some bit of orange and green. A bit of respect to prior work, but I think he is meaner now and upset – look at what has been done to our oceans. That’s his world that has been polluted.”

With Batman V Superman coming out next year, it’s possible that fans will get a preview of this specific Aquaman look, as Momoa also confirmed to Robot's Voice that he has already been scanned for toy-making purposes. (“There will be collectibles”, as he put it.) With some of the promotional toys for the movie due to be released in early January 2016, there’s a possibility that fans could see an Aquaman toy making its way to stores sooner than later.

Jason Momoa Responds to Aquaman Mockery

With Superman and Wonder Woman’s costumes in Batman v. Superman containing a more subtle look than some of their comic book counterparts, it begs the question of just how much Aquaman's suit will reflect "the Zack Snyder touch." While the Aquaman costume might have touches of the traditional comic book suit, fans should not get their hopes up that the costume will be full of bright colors. If the DCEU is Snyder’s world, then it will probably fall in line with the darker color palette established in Man of Steel. As Momoa himself said, that the oceans have been polluted, and Aquaman's appearance may be dirtier as a reflection of that.

Despite the grittier version of Aquaman, he still stands as one of the most interesting additions to the DCEU, when the hero getting his own movie in 2018. Due to be directed by James Wan (Furious 7), there is hope that the Aquaman movie will break away from the Snyder DC movie style a little bit and have some more fun with the King of Atlantis. The DCEU may be especially dark and gritty where it concerns Batman, but it could stand to be a bit lighter for the superhero who can communicate with sea creatures.
