Aquaman Movie King of Atlantis 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League

He may be the butt of every superhero joke among the masses, but Aquaman has been given new life thanks to DC Comics’ company-wide ‘New 52′ relaunch. No longer the ‘Super Friend’ in spandex who talks to fish, the new and improved Arthur Curry is a tough-as-nails king in the making.

Skills to rival Superman or Wonder Woman have won him a prominent role in not only his own title, but the Justice League series as well, meaning it’s more possible than ever that a big screen team-up will include Aquaman. If that’s the case, who could be trusted to do the King of the seas justice in live-action?

Here are our picks for 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League.

Liam McIntyre

Liam McIntyre in Spartacus Damned 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League

The reserved but good-natured star of Spartacus: Vengeance is one of our dark horses in the Flash race, but the casting of Liam McIntyre as Arthur Curry would make the intentions of Warner Bros. clear: this Aquaman’s weapons and armor aren’t for show, and is certainly not the one made famous alongside his ‘Super Friends.’ It’s a take on the character that would surprise many, but not those familiar with the New 52 version.

Now that Geoff Johns has re-imagined the aquatic hero as one of the most brutal warriors in the world, the opportunity to make Aquaman a fighter (not just a friend to fish) in Justice League is wide open. His first meeting with the rest of the League in the comics sent a clear message that he was a ruthless warrior, and casting McIntyre would do the same.

We have no doubt that McIntyre would be up to the challenge – he’s proven his abilities as a leader and combatant on a weekly basis – especially if the studio plans only to use him in a supporting role to heroes like Superman and Batman.

Alexander Skarsgård

Alexander Skarsgard in The East 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League

You don’t have to look far to see that Alexander Skarsgård is at the top of many Comic-Con attendee’s list of superheroes-in-waiting. With a fan-favorite role as True Blood‘s ‘Eric Northman,’ the Swedish actor has the kind of appeal to female genre fans that any studio would kill for –  and the type of appeal that would go a long way in making an Aquaman movie worthwhile.

Lest we forget, Skarsgård has also proven his abilities as a physical performer, brooding killer, and not-quite-human member of society. Those are all skills and experience that would come in handy with Arthur Curry’s life split between the surface-dwelling humans and the underwater kingdom (and love interest) that he can’t escape.

He may not be the member of the True Blood cast most vocally campaigning for a role with DC, but a breakout role sending Skarsgård to leading-man status is coming soon. Why not give him a trident and get while the getting’s good?

Sam Worthington

He is one of the few actors currently making a living out of wielding a sword and spear (and drawing audiences every time he does), so casting proven headliner Sam Worthington would be a wise move to attract action fans to the trident-wielding Aquaman’s standalone adventures.

While genre fans and the Comic-Con crowd may not see Worthington as an accomplished thespian or unquestionable ‘leading man’ just yet, there’s no denying the one thing he is: bankable. Wrath of the Titans (2012) proved that when Worthington is on hand for a blockbuster, a big box office is a sure thing. That’s the kind of mass appeal that die-hard comic fans may not be hoping for, but Warner Bros. needs to count on if they’re going all-in on their DC universe heroes.

Worthington’s casting might make a deep, introspective look at the weight of a crown or life as a child of two races less likely, but would guarantee some crowd-pleasing action.

Garrett Hedlund

tron legacy sequel garrett hedlund 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League

As one of the brightest young actors that has yet to hit both financial and critical acclaim headlining a film, Garrett Hedlund seems poised to explode if given the right opportunity. Some might argue that Tron: Legacy was exactly that, or that Tron 3 might be the success Disney hopes for; that may be the case, but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t bring a youthful appeal to the Aquaman’s angst.

DC and Warner Bros. would have competition, since it’s no secret Disney and Marvel both have their eyes set on Hedlund for the future (previously a finalist for Captain America ), and now that Star Wars: Episode VII is a reality – potentially requiring either a young Han Solo or Han and Leia’s son Jacen – his stock can only be rising.

Hedlund may be a long shot, but his performances in films like Friday Night Lights (2004) and Four Brothers (2005) convince us he’d do the part justice.

Jensen Ackles

Although plenty of CW fans will demand to see Justin Hartley (Smallville) get a chance at playing Aquaman since his TV pilot, Mercy Reef, was canned, Warner Bros. has an even stronger young star in its employ. We speak of course of Jensen Ackles, one half of the dynamic duo of Supernatural.

Taking a show to its ninth season is impossible without talent and a large fan base to match, so if the studio ever plans to use existing network audiences to help a hero reach mainstream success, Aquaman needs it most. And few command viewer loyalty like Ackles.

Confidence, onscreen charisma and likability are all things that Ackles’ ‘Dean Winchester’ has exuded for almost a decade on TV, with a bit of an edge that would help make Arthur Curry more than a walking joke. Men and women pay the same price for movie tickets, and Ackles has found fans with both; a much-needed boost to any Aquaman film would starting with a proven – and underrated – star.

Aquaman Justice League Jason Momoa Discussion 5 Actors Who Could Play Aquaman in Justice League

That concludes our list of actors that we feel could play the solemn, deadly, and proud Arthur Curry on the big screen. As is clear from our range of choices, the actors chosen to bring Aquaman to life in a possible Justice League movie depends largely on the version of the character Warner Bros. and DC wish to take. Ridiculed heartthrob, or future king?

What are your hopes for a live-action take on Aquaman? Do you think the comics have done a solid job of making him dangerous and deadly once again, or are you hoping to see a different approach taken?

  1. Dyce writes some of the best features on Screen Rant! Keep it up! :)

  2. I could see all these guys on this list working, and I might also add Luke Evans and Kevin McKidd.

    • Kevin McKidd did a fine job as Poseidon.

  3. In my casting choices I will like to see Sam Worthington to play “The King of Atlantis” on the big screen and appear in JUSTICE LEAGUE. He will make a great idea.

  4. in my opinion, Jensen Ackles would for sure make a great Aquaman. I’ve been a fan of SPN for years and know he can carry a film. Sam Worthington and Alexander Skarsgard would be my second and third choices.

  5. Andrew I for one love these “discussions”, Personally I have always enjoyed film analysis, discussion on probable casting, etc. Plus, I would like to see DC films as much as Marvel and other companies. I love the discussion by fans of the books or film fans in general in what may be the possible directions in which these characters can be taken and prove successful.

I am glad to see that some cast members that I either like or have mentioned in the past in this article. I know I mentioned Alexander Skarsgard before on the Green Lantern page, and so I like that others feel the same way.

Liam McIntyre- I do not know much but based on the description of what he is capable of, and his physical presence I believe he can pull of the tough as nail warrior that will definitely have audiences reconsider who Aquaman is and why he can be a badass.

Sam Worthington- I would not say that I hate him or not watch his films, but I would not say I will rush to see him anytime soon. He may very well have the potential to win me over of course, but at this current moment I do not really buy it.

Garret Hedlund- He is an actor on the rise even if he had not necessarily experienced widespread critical/financial success. Hey may have the introspection down and perhaps the action as well. Interesting choice. Not sure, but interesting to say the least.

Jensen Ackles- As a fan of Jensen Ackles on both Supernatural and Smallville I have considered the actor as Captain America before Chris Evans was cast in the role. But perhaps after playing a role in Superman (too long) origin story and voice worked as Jason Todd in Batman: Under the Red Hood, and already experienced relationship with WB, Jensen may be saved (by fate?) to play a DC character. Now I do not see Aquaman necessarily with Ackles, but he is proven to be an underrated actor who may as well do the part justice.

Jensen Ackles and Michael Rosenbaum definitely both should stay on the DC side. I imagine Ackles pulling of Hal Jordan as well but maybe a young Batman as well. Michael I see as Flash.

The role of Aquaman need a demanding physical stature similar to that of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Henry Cavill’s Superman. Aquaman will also need however an actor capable of giving off royalty, arrogance, warrior,, noble, badass vibe with complexity of devotion to two worlds and being the butt of many jokes to come. It really should be the standout role (from a character perspective) that surprises the audience.

    • @ The Archer: Glad to hear that these features are as fun to read as they are to write! :)

I think I agree with most of your sentiments, especially when it comes to Ackles. It seems to me that it would be better to cast him in a role where the gruff, brooding elements he does so well would be difficult for another actor to pull off convincingly (more actors could play the honest, good-hearted cocky pilot of Hal).

Very true that Aquaman would need to be physically imposing, and having Ackles stand next to Padalecki for a decade made me think he’s be too short, when he’s actually the same height as Henry Cavill. He’d have to hit the gym, but it could work.

Also think he’d make a solid Atom (New 52) but reading the New 52 Aquaman has Ackles written all over him the more I see.

      • Andrew, it really has been a pleasure reading these and not just the DC ones either, so please keep up the great work.

Yes, Jensen Ackles should definitely portray generally a more complex character whose qualities may seem a bit contradictory or hypocritical but in fact stem from a much deeper connection. A direction of Aquaman could be that role if they follow the New 52 guideline which will seemingly be the most obvious choice to go with. He would definitely need to bulk up but I do no think that is too much of an issue.

Again, Ackles could play a variety characters and if so not Aquaman, DC and WB would be fools to not sign him up in something else- cause honestly he is not getting any younger. I do see him more taking a grounded perspective and approach to the characters (a relative direction you and I have discussed as a possible ideal for DC properties film wise and) so I have always picture him as probably as a less fantastical character, but that is not to say Aquaman cannot be done.

Jared Padalecki is extremely tall relative to Ackles ha ha. He is also a capable, competent actor in his own right, who has been sidelined by the writers a bit in some of the later seasons of Supernatural to allow Ackles more spot-light, but I think Padalecki should also have shot to prove himself worthy. Plus, Padalecki has grown in term of muscular build over the year which along with his height, gives him a super-hero build as well. What or who I am not so sure, as I said the writers have really put Padalecki in a corner in terms of acting room.

I have not read much of the New 52 including Atom and Aquaman besides keeping up with some info, so I cannot really comment on how Ackles fit those characters listed.

        • I agree that Jensen would be a great role for Aquaman so long as he keeps a brooding, stoic character and less ‘Dean Winchester’. Aquaman, in terms of character, to me, seems like the underwater version of Batman. That being said, his character will require a type of image that reflects his back-story, and Jensen Ackles, I believe, has that image. He’ll definitely need to bulk up, but I’m sure that with a hollywood personal trainer he can be fit for the role within 6 months. This is the kind of opportunity Ackles needs to break out of the TV mould he’s been shaped into and he is the kind of actor DC could use to rake in a wider range of demographic.

My second choice for the role would be Sam Worthington, only cause he looks like the Aquaman portrayed in Smallville and he is already known for his hardened characters and physique.

Garett, Alexander and Liam don’t even seem likely candidates, in my opinion. They have too much “cute” and not a lot of “grit” that AC’s character demands.

        • I think Padalecki could make a good Batman. With a haircut, of course! 😛

    • Liam McIntyre would be a perfect choice mainly because of that fierce warrior and incharge attitude he has in Spartacus.

  6. Jensen Ackles for sure.

  7. Eric of off True Blood would make a great Aquaman

  8. Alexander Skarsgård is the best choice!!!

  9. Imo, any of the first 3 candidates would be great for the King Of Atlantis. But # 4 & 5 don’t look the part to me. WB/DC better have a great director for Aquaman’s first outing solo.

  10. I’m going for Liam and/or Sam… though I really want to see Chris Pine on this role

  11. Jensen Ackles or Robert Pattinson…

  12. Jensen Ackles :)

  13. Liam McIntyre is my favorite for Aqua-man

  14. Id say Garret Hedlund, he did absolutely AMAZING in tron legacy and is a good actor all around, when i think of aquaman i would say i think of him first and then sam worthington, i think this because tron legacy was one of my favorite movies but only because he was the main actor, Garret deserves to be in some new movies, because i would like to see him in some new action/adventure movies such as the justice league.

  15. Sorry but these guys are lame. Aquaman is a king and the person to play him should have that royal look to him and non of these guys have that.

  16. If they were to make this movie, then Nikolai Coster-Waldau would be good.

He plays Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones

    • I’m going through these comments after seeing the last ones, where Nikolaj is mentioned a few times…I’m 100% for this idea. He has that off-hand casual look of a young king from another land. Idc how old he is. The age would even make it more appropriate, although maybe not down the road, as Justice League is set to do…we’ll see.

  17. Here is the Casting Call to AQUAMAN:

    Sam Worthington as Aquaman/Arthur Curry
    Amanda Seyfried as Princess Mera
    Taylor Lautner as Aqualad
    Chris Isaaks as Ocean Master
Alexander Ludwig as Arthur Curry (age 17)
Dylan Walsh as Tom Curry (Arthur’s Dad)
Jennifer Aniston as Atlanna Curry (Arthur’s Mom)
    Nick Cannon as Carl Durham

  18. Seriously… Surely its got to be Vinny Chase!?

  19. Hey guys an interesting article on the aquaman casting. Sme other thoughts though… Liam Hemsworth (chris’s brother), Josh Dumahl (not sure of spelling . Dude off transformers), jarred padelicki other supernatural guy simply because he can be bad ass and quite taller and muscular than ackles, any thought…

  20. The best casting for Aquaman would be no one. Trying to shoehorn in an underwater sequence in the movie would weaken it. The character is just too limited. It’s going to to be hard enough to find something for a non-powered Batman to do amongst powerhouses like Superman and Wonder Woman.

  21. Liam McIntyre aka “SPARTACUS”. A Hero, warrior, a revolutionary rebel, a leader, a general, an angel of death and destruction. Aquaman would have to be controlled by the script-writers/producers/director. Aquaman would NOT be allowed to start a revolution against Batman or Superman. And no deep diving on wonderwoman.

  22. What About the Mentalist !!!! Simon Baker for an older and wiser Aquaman !!!!!

  23. Good job forgetting Josh Holloway,
    1st choice: Holloway
    2nd: Ackles
    3rd: Hedlund

  24. I always thought Aquman was cool as a kid i don’t really follow him that much nowadays. However if they make a movie on Aquman i’d love to see it but the thing that i think needs to be their main focus is making it easier to take the character seriously, i find it hard to take the orange shirt superhero seriously and i know its supposed to be armor or at least that what i reaad bout somewhere in an artist’s book but still i have trouble taking him seriously. I think these are all terrific casting choices I’m almost all for all of them, i vote Hedlund or McIntre (sorry if i spelled it wrong) i think it could be cool and fun i hope they go through with it they could do a great job.

  25. I think the best choice for Aquaman is Garrett Hedlund because his youth will do good for Aquaman. Also, he would be the best portrayed as the man swimming 10,000 feet per second and commanding all sea life. My second choice would be Sam Worthington would be a good choice because he would have a good “king” additude. One thing is for sure, Aquaman is not pathetic, and he will be as energetic as any of the other Justice League characters. He will kick ass if you didn’t know. He’s the only person who stabbed Darkseid, and the only king in the Justice League, so he will have the most attitude, even more than Batman’s. Batman has a loner attitude, Aquaman has a king attitude willing to save his Atlantean(not fish) people and everything else in the sea. Please, Aquaman doesn’t suck.

  26. I’m irritated that Green Arrow gets more done with him then Aquaman who I think needs to be shown more in the spotlight for a actor I would go with the guy who plays Spartacus in the HBO or Starz series.
