The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with several upgrades over the iPhone 13 Pro Max, both in terms of design and hardware. Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 Pro Max at its 'Far Out' event on Sept. 7 alongside three other iPhone models, including the vanilla iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro. Alongside the new iPhones, Apple also announced the Watch Series 8, Watch Ultra, Watch SE (2022) and AirPods Pro 2.
The iPhone 14 series is the follow-up to last year's iPhone 13 lineup and comes with several upgrades over the older generation. However, only select models in the new lineup get all the new features. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is one of those models, meaning it offers a ton of new features, making it a worthy upgrade over its predecessor. However, the iPhone 14 Pro also gets many of the same features and design elements as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, albeit in a smaller form factor.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the flagship device in the iPhone 14 lineup and offers many significant upgrades over the iPhone 13 Pro Max. While both devices feature 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays, the new device has a slightly higher resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels and a ProMotion panel with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. In comparison, the older model has a 2778 x 1284 panel with a 10-120Hz variable refresh rate. In addition, the new device also comes with an always-on display with several lock screen customization options as part of iOS 16.
iPhone 14 Pro Max: New Design And Hardware
Another notable upgrade with the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the new A16 Bionic chipset that packs a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, as well as a five-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. In addition, it is built on a 4nm process as opposed to the 5nm node of the A15 Bionic, meaning it should also be more power efficient than its predecessor. Apple claims that the A16 uses 20 percent less power than the A15.
The most significant visual update on the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the new 'Dynamic Island,' which replaces the massive notch at the top of the screen. It is an oblong cutout that houses the front-facing camera and the Face ID hardware, but Apple has also designed animations around it to make notifications and status indicators appear popping out of it.
Another major upgrade with this year's top-of-the-line iPhone is its primary camera. The device sports a 48MP primary image sensor as opposed to the 12MP unit in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Alongside the new primary image sensor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max also comes with a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 12MP telephoto camera like the iPhone 13 Pro Max. On the front, the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a 12MP selfie camera like its predecessor, but with an f/1.9 aperture rather than the f/2.2 aperture in the iPhone 13 Pro Max's selfie camera.
In terms of battery life, Apple claims that the iPhone 14 Pro Max can play up to 29 hours of video playback on a single charge, which is more than the 28 hours it advertised for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. However, the new phone still only charges up to 20W, which is the same as the charging speed of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. In addition, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is being offered in gold, silver, black and purple colors, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max comes in graphite, gold, silver, blue and green. In terms of price, the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099, which is the same as its predecessor.
