[Update: Watch the first Ant-Man trailer here!]

At a glance, it’s easy to see how Marvel’s Ant-Man could seem a little too similar to that of the story of Iron Man where A man changes his questionable ways and suits up to become a hero (an eventual Avenger), while a power-hungry, business-savvy enemy (Corey Stoll’s Darren Cross) suits up in a slightly better suit for a final confrontation, all driven by tech and genius inventors.

But it’s thankfully not that simple and there’s a lot more to Ant-Man which made Marvel and its bosses decide to not only greenlight the project based on the non-A-list character and place it in a position to serve as the conclusion to another chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for Civil War (Captain America 3) to kickstart  Phase 3 in 2016.

Ant-Man is a heist movie that – as a first for the MCU – explores superhero families and mentor-mentee relationships. While the present day story is about Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) passing the Ant-Man mantle (and the actual suit) over to a master thief (Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang) for the greater good, it’s also going to explore the past, using several familiar returning characters (Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter & John Slattery’s Howard Stark) to fit the original Ant-Man in the history books of S.H.I.E.L.D..

It’s an interesting and smart way to still have Hank Pym and wife Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) be founding members of what eventually becomes The Avengers just as they are in Marvel Comics. The timing of Ant-Man after The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters and after the Agent Carter miniseries airs on ABC paves an interesting road for Ant-Man to follow and that’s why first official Ant-Man teaser trailer will air next week, Tuesday, January 6th, during the two-hour premiere of Agent Carter. A week later, on January 12th, comes the second full trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Official Ant-Man movie synopsis
