Ant Man Comic Con 2012 Marvel Co President Teases Ant Man in 2014

[Update: Ant-Man may begin shooting after Thor: The Dark World for a 2014 release date.]

Before Guardians of the Galaxy and the other Phase Two Marvel Studios films were confirmed during the Iron Man 3 panel at Comic-Con 2012 over the weekend, we theorized about where Ant-Man would fit into the Marvel Studios’ release schedule.

At one point, Marvel had a pair of summer dates locked in 2014 for unannounced tentpoles. One of them became Captain America: The Winter Soldier and moved to the Spring, the other became Guardians of the Galaxy and moved back to August. Now that Ant-Man is a reality – as demonstrated via test footage premiering at Comic-Con 2012, could Ant-Man take one of those two summer 2014 dates?

We knew years ago that Ant-Man wouldn’t appear in The Avengers, with Edgar Wright stating that the character would need his own introduction post-Avengers so he can join the team the second time around. Marvel has no film currently scheduled for their original key summer 2014 dates of May 16 and June 27 and Marvel Pres Kevin Feige hasn’t been shy about the possibility of having to do three films in one year based on Edgar Wright showed him. Well, that’s happened now and the response from the Comic-Con crowd and execs including Louis D’Esposito, Co- President of Marvel Studios and Executive Producer, has been very positive.

Collider had the opportunity to chat with D’Esposito about the upcoming short film Item 47 that’s shipping with the home video release of The Avengers along other big picture plans for the franchise, including of course, Ant-Man, where he reiterated words we’ve heard from studio reps before.

“That might be an opportunity where we do a third film, depending on his schedule when he finishes World’s End.  But he’s such a competent filmmaker; the script is in great shape.  The test will prove a lot of things on the visual effects front: how do we handle the shrinking, obviously, and the scale issues, because when he’s small he’s a half-inch.  So we’re gonna work that out, maybe that’s when we do a third film.”

Wright’s The World’s End finally begins shooting in October and so he could shoot Ant-Man early next year for a 2014 release date should Marvel Studios give the project the greenlight. And if they managed to cast Ant-Man before next summer, there’s a chance we’ll get to meet him earlier in Iron Man 3.

Ant-Man received an official logo treatment (above), along with test footage, but it was the only film at the Iron Man 3 panel that didn’t get a release date. At the latest, Ant-Man will release in 2015 before The Avengers 2.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor 2 on November 8, 2013, Captain America 2 on April 4, 2014 and Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014.

  1. Gosh I hope they can release it in 2014, I love Ant Man. I’m just concerned how they’re going to market it to the average audience.

  2. The description of the test-real footage has me exicted for an Ant-Man movie.

    • Same here. I was skeptical at first. But the description made me realize that they can do some fun stuff with the character.

  3. I think ANT-MAN will work out just fine with general movie audiences.they realize and recognize the marvel brand, so it will be alright.

  4. Now as 2 who should play ant-man that one I can’t figure out and I like playing the casting game .

  5. Cant wait and see how this gonna turn out to be

  6. if the movie happen this means that Wasp will be introducing in the movie too?

  7. I hope wasp is in it! And I wouldn’t mind three marvel movies should be awesome

I have my concerns about this film but you know what marvel hasn’t disappointed yet. Ad te test footage changed my views on how cool this movie could be. Hopefully we get more Scarlett and renner in it as well.

  8. Moon Knight now!!

    • YES! We need MOON KNIGHT NOW! That would be awesome.

      • The world is not ready for Moon Knight. Give them Herc to butter them up and get a good buzz going, then drop some crazy Moon Knight on their arses. Punisher, Moon Knight, and Blade. Summer of Blood!!!!

  9. finally ant man!!!!!!! yay

  10. Finally :)

  11. Well that’s an interesting. Guess they aren’t nearly as worried about using the character’s name as the rest of us.

I’m also not sure why they felt the need to add, “based on the comic book”. Is that to inform the masses that he is a superhero? Because I would think the Marvel logo alone would have been enough.

  12. It would align nicely if he worked for SHIELD all along in the background with many job functions, one of them being a scientist. Of course everything changes for him when he harnesses the particles named after him. After taking on a radical and dangerous group on his own his value to the Avenger’s becomes obvious and it’s revealed that he somehow played a role in ‘Avengers 1′ without us even knowing about it…

    • That would be AWESOME!!! :D

    • Talked to a non-comic readin friend who felt the same. Maybe go by a different name. Pym Particle Party??

  13. Hopefully it is Hank. And Wasp NEEDS to be in this movie!

  14. Sheesh. You can make three movies with Hank Pym. Ant-Man, Giant Man and Yellowjacket.

  15. i just watched Deja Vu the other night and wow totally forgot that Val Kilmer was in that- now if he would just get fit and lean like he was in that then maybe…..

  16. That would be cool.
If Ant-Man can be squeezed into their 2014 schedule, then maybe that could mean a 2015 release for The Black Panther?

  17. I’m sure this has been discussed.

But if Marvel went with a SHIELD movie, they could have more time to continue developing Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury. This would also allow Marvel to introduce Ant-Man, WASP and even Black Panther.

It would fit perfect with the final date Marvel has available and help get the characters ready for Avengers 2.

    Just my $.02

  18. i dont want to see an antman solo movie .. if anything they should make it a… antman & hulk film … then again way back in the early 2000s i would of said i dont want to see an iron man movie .. so there you go ..

  19. Pym will go over better than GotG. They should move GotG toward Christmas so all the little kids can get Rocket Raccoon dolls. Sorry, I’m not supposed to say that name. Maybe a Walrus who flies ships or a Talking Tree doll. Maybe they can also make Jim Carrey’s talking anus into a Guardian of the Galaxy. Call him the Black Hole. Or the Brown Hole.

  20. I love ant man he’s one of my favorites, like many others I thought he would be in the avengers being the founding member in the original team and all. After I saw iron man I was reading up on what the next step for marvel was and I heard Edgar wright was directing that was years ago and I kept wondering when I was gonna hear anything about the movie and I am so glad that it finally looks like its happening. I haven’t seen any of Wrights movies yet but he seems like an excellent choice of director and he seems like he has a ton of great ideas for the movie, when you think about it hes had to work on the script for years making it better each time he wrote it with joe Cornish who I also think is a great movie maker having worked with wright on plenty of films. All in all I am absolutely dying for the Ant-Man movie I want them to just f###ing get started already I want to see all the set photos I want to learn about the cast the trailers effects music, I was so bummed that no body bootlegged the test footage of all the things the fans bootleg they couldn’t bootleg a ten minute clip lol, man hurry up marvel me WANT ANT-MAN
