Ant Man Marvel Comics Lineup Paul Rudd Cast as Scott Lang in Marvels Ant Man Movie [RE UPDATED]

[RE-UPDATE: Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang while Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym!]

[UPDATE: Marvel has confirmed that Paul Rudd will play Ant-Man. Scroll for details.]

Marvel Studios has proven it’s a force to be reckoned with, changing the game with its shared universe model, making a multi-million brand out of superhero movies, and breakout stars out of more than a few actors. But riskier waters lie ahead for the studio, with comic book properties that virtually no one outside of the fanboy community knows about (Guardians of the Galaxy) or cares about (Ant-Man).

But will the skepticism about Ant-Man  change – now that we know that charm-king actor Paul Rudd is playing him?

The Wrap dropped the exclusive announcement of Rudd “being in talks” with Marvel Studios, but with months of speculation that Rudd was in competition for the role against Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who’s since moved on to Sandman) – as well as the noted (and observable) evidence of Rudd already looking more fit for the role, it’s a pretty safe bet that the actor WILL be signing on the dotted line to play Hank Pym.

RE-UPDATE: Though The Wrap initially confirmed Rudd as Pym, it turns out Rudd is in fact the character Scott Lang, with Michael Douglas now confirmed as Hank Pym. TWIST ENDING!

Paul Rudd in ‘Admission’

Ant-Man has been in development for some time under the eye of The World’s End director Edgar Wright, who co-wrote the script with Attack the Block filmmaker Joe Cornish; Wright will also be directing the flick.

The skepticism about Ant-Man as a viable film property should be obvious; it’s about a superhero scientist who invents size-altering particles and technology that allows him to communicate with insects. That’s pretty silly even by comic book standards.

However, fans should be happy to learn that Hank Pym – one of the founding Avengers in the comic books – will indeed be the version of Ant-Man we’re getting. How Pym will be implemented into the Marvel movie universe remains to be seen – it could be a vastly different playing field by the time Ant-Man kicks off Phase 3 following the events of The Avengers: Age of Ultron in summer 2015 – and how much of his mythos is implemented also remains to be seen.

Will we also get Wasp? Will elements of other Ant-Man mantle holders like Scott Lang (a father) and/or Eric O’Grady (a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent) be melded with this version of Pym? It’s definitely possible (maybe even prudent) to have the best elements of all three Ant-Men combined into one quality movie character.

UPDATE: It’s official – Marvel has confirmed that Paul Rudd has been cast as Ant-Man. Here’s what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had to say about the casting decision:

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”

  1. I like Rudd and this is a solid casting choice, and I’ll probably go watch this because it seems like a promising movie… but I’m still kinda doubting if it’ll take off with audiences. How you sell the concept of a shrinking superhero is beyond me (and don’t knock me with the ‘but he’s so much more!’ argument – general audiences are not gonna see past that). I think a kickass trailer could really sell it if done well though, if it’s anything like the test footage Wright screened (or rather, if it’s anything like what we’ve heard it is) then they’ve got a shot.

  2. Some of you guys take fictional characters way too seriously. You know who you are.

Good news on Rudd getting the role. Seasoned comedy actor.

  3. We will see a mash up of Scott Lang and Pym.

Something along the lines of him working for SHIELD maybe getting accused of doing something wrong/framed. Stealing the/his Ant-Man prototype to clear his name and being forced by SHIELD into the Avengers.

As for the ‘wife beating’. There is nothing wrong with it being addressed. It is a happening in life. We have movies about the Holocaust, terrorist, kidnappings and everything else in super hero movies. There is nothing wrong with (properly) portraying a man that has issues that he needs to overcome.

Im not saying it will happen but if it does it wont ruin the movie.

    • It’d make Ant-Man a better movie than anything. But it’ll never happen. Marvel/Disney isn’t thought provoking. It’s safe and funny.

    • *not ‘more than’, if.

  4. Lol, as long as it’s Hank Pym, I don’t even really care who they cast :D

    • Right on!!

    • Agree!

    • they cast shia labeouf

      • Whoaa hold on with that crazy talk.

  5. Talking to insects is uh huh huh huh cool! Yeah it rules!

  6. Paul Rudd??? Who? The guy from Halloween 5? This is 40?

    LOL!!!

Elizabeth Olsen? Huh? The non-twin Olsen? What a terrible choice!

Marvel wants to turn itself into a walking joke.

A very, very bad walking joke.

I suppose a thank you is in order for letting everyone know that Marvel plans to never take anything seriously ever again!!!

    • I dont care for the young adult twightlike castng olsen and johnson in avengers 2,
personally rather would have preferred older and mature actors for quicksilver
and wanda. Paul rudd is a good cast though, because hank pym is a wise guy with
A sense of humor and also is arrogant and defiant. Rudd fills all of these qualities to
Ultimately contradict iron man on his decisions and motives.

      • exactly what I had in mind… “Rudd fills all of these qualities to
Ultimately contradict iron man on his decisions and motives.” And Tony Starks doesn’t have to be the funny one of the group all the time. I was doubtful at first, but I think this is gonna work …good news !

    • Still better than casting a stick to play Wonder Woman.

      • Haha…the “stick” comment was good !
        Totally agree !

    • Yes because the comics take themselves soooooo seriously lol

      Also, Wikipedia is your friend.

      • Wikipedia has no spoiler alert ;)

    • Ahh…Jake is a sad little D.C. troll…

Personally Im ok with Olsen as SW and Paul Rudd as AM. Not too stoked about the casting of Quicksilver.

      • just because he doesn’t agree with a Marvel casting makes him a DC troll? What?

    • It was Halloween 6 man, get it right!

    • you are a sad, strange little man….

    • I don’t know if you’ve seen the Olsen Twins movies lately, but they can’t act.

      • Then do watch ELIZABETH Olsen’s movies… you’ll know she can act MUCH better than her twin sisters :)

  7. Is there enough interest in this character for a motion picture ? He’s relatively unknown and useless other then creating one of the avengers worst villains.

    • Outside of the comic book fan world, the exact same thing was said about Iron Man only a few years ago.

      • Completely true.

    • He is one of the most complex heroes there is. He is bipolar and a genius, like the original Carrie from Homeland.

    • Yes, there are a lot of superheroes that are not well known enough for a movie that will wind up having great movies. I’m very interested in seeing Ant-Man on the big screen. I don’t know much about the character and it’s a superhero movie. When is everyone going to stop complaining about it and just enjoy the rush while it lasts?

  8. ANT-MAN!!!!! :D :D :D

Edgar Wright has got this one. They could have cast Joe Blow Shmoe in this role and I still would be just as excited.

    • Hey now, I’ll have you know that Joe Blow Shmoe has been nominated for 2 Oscars and 4 Golden Globes, so I would of had no problem with him being cast.

      • Personally, I’m not in favor of Shmoe’s latest works. He’s lost that edge that made him the American movie icon we all know and love. But if he brings back the acting chops he had in movies like “Blooper Reel” and “Just Another Film” — then I think we would have some promising Ant-Man material from him. Too bad he hasn’t been able to say no to some of these new roles that are hurting his reputation as an actor — which is why Disney/Marvel (as well as other studios) often pass up the opportunity to cast Shmoe in big budget films.
However, despite the fact that Joe Blow Shmoe will not be Ant-Man, I’m still very much looking forward to Paul Rudd’s take on the character.

        • LOL made my day :)

  9. Check out the Ant-Man test footage here: http://ap2hyc.com/?p=3815

    • I really had no interest in it until the movie was announced, and now I’m really excited. The test footage is so good!

  10. A guy who shrinks – Paul Rudd will do just fine (I probably feel that way because I typically think everything is at least decent).

    • Lol you’re a happy guy! :D

    • Same here! I try to be more critical about things but honestly I both look for the best (“Kristin Stewart is a terrible actress! No emotions, no facial expressions” Me: “Oh? Well I thought that was just what Bella was supposed to be – sullen, sulky, blank slate of a teen”) and am my own’s devil’s advocate.

Except for TDKR though. Really thought it was dry crap.

  11. Say what you will, but at least Marvel isn’t facing the same issues that DC is facing with its movies. I’m not an “Ant-Man” fanboy, but I’ll still be in line for the premiere nonetheless.

  12. Thank god! Just who I wanted to portray him!

  13. The way I see it, he will play the role of an established scientist. He might be the man behind the technology that gives life to Ultron so it is very likely that there will be a younger actor playing the role of Scott Lang. I don’t see Rudd doing any action stuff.

    • ‘I don’t see Rudd doing any action stuff.’

      Why not?

  14. The way I see it, they’ll have Rudd do a cameo in Avengers:AoU just popping in when tony mentions having help creating a new robot and then they’ll say he’s got his own projects to work on. Then, for the ant man film they’ll explore Hank coming to terms with what he helped create, leading to his noted pacifism and wanting to develop the ant man suit so he can escape the blame so-to-speak and thus realizing he can make amends by taking on a hero persona. My only concern is having Janet Van Dyne in it in some regard. They NEED her. She’s the whole reason Hank joins the Avengers.

    • That’s the exact same thing I’ve been hoping for!

    • I agree with you!! This would be awesome, and I’d hope it would be something like this. I would also LOVE to have Wasp in there, in a substancial role. Although Jan was not the reason Hank joined the Avengers. First of all, he didn’t join, he founded the team, along with Jan. It was their common idea to form a team of super-heroes. But you’re so right, she just HAS to be there!

    • cept Fiege/Whedon have stated that Pym will not be featured in AOU and will have no involvement with Ultron’s creation… so….

      Read up, boys.

      • You’re right. That’s my mistake. I always get the original Avengers crew mixed up from the tv show and the movie and the comics. My apologies.
And I was unaware Whedon had already closed the door on Hank NOT appearing in AoU. THat’s a bit disheartening. Hopefully they don’t overhaul his mythos too much, then.

  15. YEEEEES! Good one paul, well done.

  16. I’m glad and so excited for this news!
I hope the deal goes good and he will do it! Can’t wait to see Rudd as a dilematic ‘superhero’ XD

  17. I just hope this won’t be a flat out comedy, if they want to do that, then they should just do a Great Lakes Avengers movie.

  18. How exactly do we know that it will be Hank Pym?? Last I heard, Wright’s script had a golden age Hank hanging out with Howard Stark, and then a present day Scott Lang?

  19. Looking forward to seeing him in a more dramatic role, even if he is a wise guy. This is a good casting.

  20. This would be a worse casting decision than Ben Affleck being Batman, but still better than the casting choice DC made with Wonder Woman.

I cannot see him being the “Scientist Supreme”, or a spy, or whatever Marvel wants to do with the character, he should not be in superhero movies… Casting choice: FAIL!!!

  21. Good casting, still not excited for this movie in the least.

  22. This is worse casting choice than Ben Affleck as Batman, but better than DC’s choice of Wonder Woman…

  23. Ante UP!!!

  24. WOW so, so, so excited that this has been confirmed.

  25. Firstly, Good article – the film may indeed combine aspects of all three ant-men into the main character Pym but I believe there is a greater likelihood that the antagonist will be a hybrid of Lang and O’Grady. A single parent S.H.I.E.L.D agent that steals the ant suit to save his child while the insane Pym is masquerading around as Yellow Jacket.

There most likely will be flashbacks of a lucid Pym in ant-man in the suit along with a redemption arc for Pym as Yellow Jacket. Who teams up the Lang / O’Grady hybrid to defeat the films villain.

Wright will most likely will wait for Giant Man (the sequel) or the Avengers 3 to introduce Janet as the Wasp, with Pym giving Janet the Yellow Jacket technology once he becomes Giant man. I suspect that the Lang / O’grady hybrid Ant-Man will star in a spin-off (Ant-Man 2) if the character is well received.

    • Really? I’m not that knowledgeable about the Ant-Man universe, but have recently become interested in it. I hope that we get to see Wasp (Janet) sooner than later.

      • I think the first film will focus on Four things:

The horror aspect associated with Pym shrinking down for the first time and almost dying.

Flashbacks of Hank initially meeting Janet, and how the stress of their break-up contributes to his erratic behavior.

How Pym transforms from a pacifist scientist, to a bio energy gun toting insane vigilante that is framed for stealing, to a redeemed hero.

And the Lang character that steals the ant-man suit, commits crimes to raise money to save his daughter, and later with Pym takes down the villain.

You don’t want to introduce too many heroes in one feature film (see Iron Man 2, Spiderman 3 and X Men last Stand), I believe this film will focus on the Ant-Man characters and introduce Janet as purely a love interest of Hanks. Then in subsequent movies re-introduce Janet as the Wasp once Hank becomes Giant Man.

  26. Why are so many people stoked about Ant Man? I thought he was typed as kind of a liberal d-bag (not saying they all are, but just his character). Like he was intentionally, the annoying one… like a bug.

I am not trolling or being incredulous. I’m just trying to figure out where all the excitement stems from.

    • Because he’s a twisted dilemmatic who actually don’t like violence but was brought up to be a hero by Jan. Later he will suffer multiple personality disorder, and that makes the character even more compelling to explore than ever. He’s not just your superhero, he’s also a mad scientist haha

  27. Hmm.

So it’s now official? I only ask because I’d told friends about it on Thursday morning based on the BBC reporting it on one of their services as official on Wednesday night.

    • Yep, Marvel confirmed it.

    • It was previously not “official,” but it was being reported from several reputable sources. Now it’s officially official through Marvel.

  28. Paul Rudd?!?!?!?!?!?!? So is this a comedy? So what is he gonna do create Pym particles shrink down and fight the roaches and flies in his apartment?

This movie is gonna suck major IMO.

    • Hey, roaches are scary to fight no matter what size you are.

  29. Wow thats right “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers” and Josh from “Clueless”. I forgot how long he has been around. Pretty decent choice I must say. I can totally see his personality fitting well for this character.
