Dr. Strange Marvel Movie Ant Man & Doctor Strange Confirmed as Marvel Phase Three Movies

Marvel Studios has only one non-sequel in development that will release in the next two-and-a-half years, and that project has been dominating the headlines as of late with rapid fire reports and rumors surrounding the casting of Guardians of the Galaxy. It won’t be until after The Avengers 2 when a new hero will get a chance to headline their own film, thanks to Edgar Wright and his dedication to realizing Ant-Man on the big screen.

With Ant-Man releasing months after the second team-up event film, is it still part of “Phase Two” of the Marvel cinematic universe? No, in fact it’s in Phase Three where Doctor Strange will also finally have his own movie.

In chatting with MTV, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige flat out confirmed the positioning of Ant-Man in the Marvel cinematic universe as the first step in Phase Three after The Avengers 2. He also iterates that the “only” reason it’s happening is because of the unique vision of Edgar Wright, who’s writing and directing the feature – after having been attached for years and years.

“‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three. Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie… I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

Phase One was six films, Phase Two will only be five – not counting the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series that began shooting this week.

Like Guardians of the GalaxyAnt-Man will be the next Marvel Studios full-length feature to showcase and explore entirely new characters for the franchise, and its positioning after The Avengers 2 makes it rather clear that he will not be a main character in that story. Even before The Avengers 1, Edgar Wright said Ant-Man would need his origin tale told first before he could become a member of Earth’s Mightiest and while executives at Marvel considered the idea of having three movies in one year (i.e. Ant-Man in 2014) it wasn’t a realistic scenario.

“So much of the stories we’re telling [right now] is about the core ‘Avengers’ characters we’ve now met, and they’ll be evolving in big, surprising ways, in Cap’s next movie and Thor’s next movie and of course in ‘Iron Man 3,’ as we get them all into the next ‘Avengers’ film. Beyond that… ‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop.”

Guardians of the Galaxy was one property frequently name-dropped by Feige, alongside Dr. Strange and The Inhumans, for over the last two years, representing riskier “out there” types of properties that delve deep into the sci-fi and fantasy realms of the Marvel Comics library. We of course know that Guardians is on its way to becoming a reality, and rumors in recent months had a potential Strange appearance in this fall’s Thor: The Dark World. So, after multiple reports of Marvel developing the project, is Doctor Stephen Strange actually going to get his chance?

“‘Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them. He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”

Let’s hope it’s better than the 1978 TV movie.

Ant-Man is the film with the latest release date for fall 2015, which means the earliest we’ll see Dr. Strange, is 2016. Both will be separate chapters in Phase Three of the Marvel cinematic universe. We always knew they were going cosmic after The Avengers. Should Guillermo del Toro direct Doctor Strange? What about Black Panther?

More on this soon…

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

    • I really wish ppl would get ovr their MAN LOVE for Nathan Fillian, he is 10 yrs older than he was in firefly ans personally I dont think he was all that special! WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT HIM? I actually dont like him because ppl suggest him for EVERY F-ING ROLE…..

      • Plus he is junky now

      • ummm…have you not seen Dr. Horrible?? A.K.A. the greatest thing Joss Whedon’s done besides Avengers. I’m not the biggest Firefly fan, but that man has charisma to spare! But he needs to be Star Lord!! And why Jason Statham hasn’t been approached to voice Rocket Raccoon is far beyond me.

        • Dr. Horrible? The lame @$$ musical? You are dead to me, Darthballs.

      • Where the hell is the “kudos” button?

Slappy,I feel the exact same way.

        • I seriously think that guy from the TRON movie should definitely play the role as Hank Pym, Ant-Man. :D

          • I vote for Garrett Hedlund as Ant-Man.

      • People want Nathan Fillion for just about every role because they liked him in Firefly. They liked Firefly. I liked Firefly. They wish to bring back Firefly. So they want Fillion in something else, anything else, that has to do with “geeky” culture (no offense :-)), like superheroes. But guess what? Nathan Fillion is NOTHING like Hank Pym. He doesn’t look the part, he doesn’t sound the part. All the roles I’ve seen him in are NOTHING like Pym. So, honestly, apart from the “bring back Firefly” bit, I don’t understand at all why people would suggest Fillion for the role. In my opinion, he would so scrap the character that it almost makes me lose sleep! And I consider myself a pretty good Marvel Fan, and I don’t see him in ANY role in the Marvel universe, except maybe a villain. Hmmm, maybe like Whirlwind. Yep, that could work.

I would see more actors like Simon Baker or Aaron Ekhart play the part. They look clever and inteligent, and could play easily “one of the ten most inteligent people on Earth”. Or even more, a new actor we’re not really familiar with. After all, Chris Helmsworth wasn’t very well known before Thor, and look at him now :-)

Nathan Fillion fans: watch Castle :-)

  1. I think I just died! :D Finally Doctor strange is happening! and possibly Black Panther. and Ant-Man this couldn’t get any better! I hope they get Jeffery Dean Morgan to Play Doctor Strange because he sort of looks like him I have a feeling Avengers 3 is going to 100x Epic-er than the first one! (also the second one)really excited for black panther he’s like the Bat-Man of the Team. Thank you Kevin Fiege and Marvel I can die in peace now! :)

    • You tell em, Slappy! You under-rated Star Fox character, you!

      • IT was probably you cheerio!!!

        • Huzzzaaahhh!!! No, it wasn’t. I don’t get involved in these silly battles. Especially when it comes to Marvel properties. DC now… that’s a different story.

  2. Well. This news certainly has its ups and downs. I was hoping for Dr Strange and Black Panther sooner. Also I now have a lot of question. What will be the climax of phase three? Is it Avengers3? Also,if Antman is not coming til 2015 then why is Janet Van Dyne appearing in Ironman3? Apparently there wont be any shrinking technology yet so she probably wont assume the identity of The Wasp yet. I certainly hope Daredevil will make an appearance by phase 3, since Marvel has hisfilm rights now. Here’s looking forward to more comic book movies.

    • I’m hoping Daredevil gets folded into the TV side of the MCU then makes a cameo here or there in the films

  3. Terry Gilliam for Doctor Strange…… or Guillermo del Toro ……… OR Peter Jackson. He’ll be done with The Hobbit by then.

    • Peter Jackson would be awesome for Doctor Strange. But I think he would be kind of a too high profile director for a Marvel Studios movie though.

      • And to long

        • Jackson should try and pick a horror themed Marvel or DC character and go back to his roots when he made splatter movies like Bad Taste, just to throw people off who only know him for the LOTR and King Kong movies.

  4. They will do a Black Panther movie, I really think they are just winding up the fans! Marvel knows everyone wants a BP movie so I really do think he will be in Phase 3

    • IDk if Marvel actually knows this, they’ve never really talked about a Black Panther movie, surprisingly. It seems he would certainly be a fan favorite…at least with a certain section of the fan base.

      • Your forgetting thor 3 and cap 3 will probably be in phase 3. I doubt black panther

      • Kevin Feige has mentioned something about a BP movie and that he likes the idea of a BP movie, So I do think that there will be one! unless they really think that AntMan will be a better draw??? sounds crazy to me! I would rather a BP movie over AntMan and I dont know too much about either, just the basics, but I have always felt AM sounded kinda goofy! I hope it works, Since they have been talking about it for 8 damn years it BETTER work! I WOULD LOVE A PLANET HULK MOVIE but it would cost 500million dollars to make!! THE WHOLE MOVIE would be CGI, and not just some goofy CGI but the good money stuff!! THEY cut out a great scene that the hulk was supposed to have because of money in the avengers, and it was only a 30 to 45sec scene! They even referenced it during the movie when banner says something like you could just smell crazy from loki, that was supposed to lead to the scene where the hulk pummels loki by sniffing out the real on from MANY loki’s surrounding the hulk and he sniffs out the REAL loki and then beats him to a pulp!! BUT that scene cost too much, JUST IMAGINE WHAT A WHOLE PLANET HULK WOULD COST!!!!! YIKES……..

  5. just from hearing ant man as part of phase 3, i can tell phase 3s big bad will be none other than… ULTRON! which would be an amazing way to top off a trilogy.

    • Ultron would be awesome, but if it’s the climax of the trilogy, they need to scrap the big bad and do a version of the civil war/secret wars storyline. That would be EPIC.

      • Would’ve been better to have Ultron in Avengers 2 and Thanos finally fought and defeated in Avengers 3 if I’m honest.

Going from a synthetic human/robot to a serious galactic threat sounds so much better than doing it the other way round.

They could retool Hulk that way, have it so that Thanos is the reason Hulk is sent deep into space during Phase 2 (or Avengers 2), setting up a possible Planet Hulk adaption that modifies the opening to that story.

Then, Hulk returns in time to help smash Thanos and his allies in Avengers 3, cosmic threat over for now, bring on Phase 4.

        • This has always been my opinion.

Doing this story next also had the added benefit of giving us Vision for A3 (one of my favorite characters that I have always wanted to see on the big screen)

  6. I really think that Viggo Mortenson would be a perfect Doctor Strange, to be quite honest. I’m not exactly sure who else I could see play him.

    • Actually,Viggo would be an AWESOME Graviton.

  7. I think Ewan McGregor would fits this role perfectly.

  8. Doctor Strange, that’s awesome!

But Ant-Man, really? There are so many great characters that deserve their own films, but Ant-Man? I’m not against the character appearing, I just think it would have been better to do a Shield movie to tie into the TV series and introduce Ant-Man, Wasp, and characters like that.

I was nervous about a solo Thor movie getting an audience, but I can’t possibly see Ant-Man getting a strong audience at all. I just don’t see money to be made there. And I am a HUGE comic book fan, but even I will need a really good trailer to get me to see this movie in theaters. I’m not hating on the character, I just think it’s a terrible idea to use him as the title character. I would have preferred them to focus more on characters like Black Panther, or even a girl Avenger getting their own films.

    • I so agree with you, especially the need for a Marvel Lady warrior to get her own vehicle. Ant-Man is just not an appealing character.

Now that I said that, watch it become the most beloved movie of them all.

Pumped for Dr. Strange. One of my all time favorites. None of my friends were into him in the world of comics, just me. He can be done justice in this day and age.

Geez, that’s only, what…. 6 years before release?

      • Calm down… no hate here…

It’s just that these movies are the Gold Standard of a character. And here we are talking phase three, and we have the Black Widow in a supporting role in the “Avengers” and “Iron Man” and…. What? (Not including the non-Marvel movies for this conversation.) You have such great characters like Captain Marvel (former Ms. Marvel, for the non-geek) She-Hulk, heck even the Wasp that could open up the diverse Marvel Universe. Ant-Man has never held his own book, never been a top-tier character, and has only had supporting roles for as long as I can remember. Make him a part of the Avengers 2, I applaud and get even more excited. As it is, this is just a slot my personal opinion feels belongs to another hero.

But, like my above comment states, I could see this labor of love by Mr. Wright being a HUGE success because he digs this character.

But Dr. Strange has held his own three series, been a part of Marvel lore for 50 years. Iron Man longer. Luke Cage and Black Panther are diverse characters that have been around almost as long with the same history. Iron Fist has an amazing back story, and his and Luke Cage’s “Heroes for Hire” is a great story. I just feel there are so many more compelling characters.

    • You two Ant-Man haters go talk amongst yourselves over there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

      • Well-said, Mongoose ;-) LOL

  9. I would rather have a Black Panther, Heros for Hire, (a marvel owned) Daredevil, Ms Marvel, Dr Strange and Sentry movie over Ant Man. Not saying that he is a bad character, just saying there are other heros that would fill the seats better then Hank Pym’s alter ego known as ant man.

Would rather have him appear like Black Widow and Hawkeye in the Avengers, neither of them had their own solo movie.

Have him appear in the SHIELD tv show. Have him punt the Abomination (like in the cartoon). THEN give him his own story.

  10. The hero movie I’m looking most forward to is Black Panther :3

    • Annihilus??? You can’t bring him in without the Fantastic Four!

      • Well soldier how about Avengers: Fear Itself, as a good title?

    • What about Cap 3 and Guardians 2? ;)

      • Cap doesn’t need a third movie, and a Guardians sequel would take up space for other characters to have they’re own movies.

  11. I am looking at some of the fancasts for Doctor Strange online and after filtering out some of the BS ideas like Johnny Depp, I found a few interesting ones that I hadn’t heard before, like Eric Balfour, Oded Fehr, and Johnathan Rhys Meyers.

I haven’t been the biggest fan of a lot of these fancasts, but what do you guys think of these?

    • Oded Fehr would be perfect. I don’t know why didn’t I think of him before?

      • I wouldn’t say “perfect”. Out of those three I do like him best but I would wonder if his exotic look fits well with someone supposedly born of Caucasian parents and raised in Nebraska? They would really have to change his background to explain having an Eastern Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern heritage. Not that Fox, Sony and Marvel themselves haven’t made more radical changes with characters in the past but those changes have always been to secondary and tertiary characters (thus far)

And no, I’m not a racist. I just believe in portraying the characters as they were originally written.

        • @Mongoose, I agree with you on that. SOME characters such as Nick Fury can be re-tooled and still work for a modern day era but some need to left as is. Besides, if Nick Fury was portrayed as the original Caucasian version, then some might think that Marvel were being kinda racist with an ALL Caucasian cast.:/ Oded Ferer has a very Middle Eastern look HOWEVER, I do see him EASILY portraying “Kraven The Hunter”. Kraven may be Russian but there are MANY Russians of East Asian and Middle Eastern descent. Russia is close to Asia, the Middle East and Europe all at once. So there are DEFINITELY different features there but more importantly, Oded Ferer DOES look like Kraven to me.

          • I have always liked the actor and agree he would make a great Kraven since he has always represented the , “exotic”.

And ever since Hasselhoff played Fury I can’t get the relationship out of my head because he was actually an excellent match for the character. So I am actually glad they went with the Ultimates version and SLJ to play him.

@Roguedork19……Ferer is a full born Israeli. How are you going to explain him having a name like Stephen Strange? I mean even if you said that his parents fled Israel, settled in America, and had a child, they would never have the last name, Strange. (and no, I would consider it sacrilege to have him change his name later, once he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme. That’s part of the Marvel charm of character naming you would be screwing with)

As for Neeson……Dr. Strange is not a young guy. He was born in 1930 which makes him 83 at present. His sorcery has extended his life but he still looks older. If they hire Neeson he will be 61-62 which I think is the perfect age and look for the character.

I also wouldn’t be opposed to Mortenson playing him because he is only 6 years younger than Neeson and is a decent visual match-up.

            • are you telling me ARAGORN is 55 years old mongoose?? DAM* I never would have thought he was THAT old LOL…. I really thik he would be the BEST choice and Liam Neeson a very close second!!

  12. Still sad we have to wait so long for Ant-man, I sure hope he makes an appearance in phase 2, and a small role in the avengers 2. Also, for those of you complaining, Ant-man needs a seperate story, he requires a full story to that persona, after that over the development of the movies, we can see the development of giant-man, Goliath, and YellowJacket. And of course the second ant-man.

    • also the title should be the Astonishing Ant-Man, since he first appeared in Tales to astonish :p

  13. I’m really looking forward to seeing GotG and Ant Man.

  14. Dr. Strange? Cool beans… but what about the Black Panther?!

    • Black Panther is too hard to be made into movie. thats what Marvel co-president Louis D’Esposito has said. but yet praise GOTG lol

  15. Wow… Marvel President Kevin Feige himself saying that the only reason they are making an Ant-Man movie is because Edgar Wright is doing it. Meaning what?? That, otherwise, he would never have put Ant-Man in the MCU?? But he’s a freakin’ founding member, for pete’s sake! Way to insult fans (who by the way, are many) and in some way disrespect the works of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby! Seriously, he should show a bit more enthousiasm for a movie produced by his company and that is in need of more positive publicity since the hero isn’t really mainstream to people not acquainted with the Marve Universe. Not a very clever move in my opinion (and as a fan, I do feel a bit insulted, honestly…)

Having said that, I still have the hopes of seeing Henry Pym (not Ant-Man since they said he won’t be part of phase two…) in IM3 or Avengers 2 (or Cap 2…). They have been known for playing on words before, so not Ant-Man doesn’t necessarily mean no Pym. Still, these news disappoint me a little, seeing that one of my favourite heroes won’t be around soon…

As for Doc Strange, it’s actually good news to his fans. I can’t say I’m very familiar with him, having only seen him in cameos on Avengers comics, but I’m looking forward to getting to know him better. Hopefully, they will keep the character and his background close to that of the comics. It would be nice to see Black Panther around, too. The only project I’m not enthousiastic about is Gardians of the Galaxy. I don’t understand why it has been privileged over Ant-Man, Black Panther, or Miss Marvel.

    • I concur on the Henry Pym front. He does serve a bit more respect. However, they never said he wouldn’t have appeared in the MCU, he just wouldnt have as big, though in the comics, he did lose his solo title an became an Avengers mainliner for decades. and there have been 2 other ant-mans, a couple of goliaths, and another Giant-man(his assistant Bill Foster), oh and another yellow jacket. You have to have some skill to get so many heroes adopting his identies

      • From what I heard, Wright and Cornish are writing Ant-Man to show Pym in the 60s in the early part of the movie and Lange in the modern era.

How true that is, I don’t know.

        • Those were the early rumors, but I hope they have changed their minds since, because it’s kind of obvious from all the forums and the threads on Screenrant and other sites that the fans don’t want that. I do hope they will make a movie for the fans, and not just for themselves. Not a lot of people want Lang as the hero, or even in the movie at all. When they think “Ant-Man”, the Marvel fans think “Hank Pym”. Scott Lang is just a background character in the big History of the Avengers, and should even less have a movie than Pym.

Adding that to the mysterious role Stefanie forgot-her-last-name (really sorry :-( ) in Iron Man 3, which is believed to be Janet Van Dyne, but not confirmed yet, and it would be highly illogical to have the Wasp without Ant-Man (Pym), and even more illogical to have a twenty-something Wasp with an eighty-something Pym. And it would be a sacrilege – and I do mean it!- to have the Wasp paired with Scott Lang. That would kill it for me. And for a lot of fans.

So I do think they will go with a contemporary Pym. Or at least, I do hope so. Otherwise, I think they would destroy the character, his history and everything that goes with it. In that case, better not bother to make a movie at all.

I really think I’m too passionate about this! LOL

          • I share your desire but Edgar Wright has ALWAYS wanted to make a movie based on the comic, “Marvel Premiere #47 – To Steal an Ant-Man!” and I can’t see that changing no matter how much the vocal minority (which I am a part of) doesn’t want it.

So I would think if they completely retooled the script to make Pym the primary character, Wright would not want to direct it anymore.

I want to be completely wrong about this and also hope Pym is in The Avengers 2 as a pure scientist and helps to bring us the Ultron story arc so we can have Vision for Avengers 3.

            • I still think they could make the movie based on that Marvel Premiere #47 comic issue, but not put Pym in the 60s to begin with. If we get to know Pym in IM3, or Cap2 or The Avengers 2, and then have Lang steal his suit in the Ant-Man movie, it would make also a great story, without the need to put the original Ant-Man in the 60s. I don’t mind if the movie involves also Lang, I just don’t want to see the real Ant-Man pushed aside for him. Lang doesn’t even have real superhero powers, he needs the suit to change sizes. Pym can do it butt-naked. Ha!

I don’t understand why Wright would be so focused on that “To Steal an Ant-Man” story, it’s not even part of the main story of the Avengers. I don’t get it. Oh well… let’s wait and see if they’ll listen to the fans.

              • Well I can uunderstand why that story would make a good movie, however the original adventure of pym himself was a sci-fi not a superhero adventure. I think it would be awesome if we saw Ant-man(Pym) even in a smaller role then have his costume stolen in the movie, and result in us getting Goliath in avengers 2 as pym, and lang as ant-man, that would be a nice compromise. Though Pym does need to be alive and major modern day, he has a rich and interesting legacy and is essential to the avengers. Also unlike Lang, he is still alive!

                • If Avengers:EMH showed us anything, it’s that Pym was never defined by his name. He went, “big” just as often as he shrunk.

                • @Mongoose: you got that feeling about Wright too, eh? :-/

  16. I am very thrilled to hear about the Doctor Strange movie, it’s an awesome addition to Phase 3!

I hope Black Panther is next to be announced! He needs to be added to the MCU. And maybe Thor 3 then and I think it would be time to get Ms. Marvel on-screen with her own movie for Phase 3.

So yeah, what I would love to see is then:
    Doctor Strange
    Black Panther
Thor 3 (or Cap 3 or idk but there probably will be some movie with a Phase 1 hero sequel, maybe a new Hulk movie is in order)
Ms Marvel (including Captain Mar-vell of course)
    Avengers 3

  17. I just read a description for a lego iron man 3 set and one of the figures was “Iron Man Heartbreaker”

  18. Cool. Maybe Disney can reuse the set pieces from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids for Ant-Man!

  19. So…i guess we’re never gonna see black panther anytime soon then.

  20. Still hopeful that Joss Whedon will surprise us all and add Black Panther to Avengers 2.

  21. Oded Fehr, anyone?

  22. I think Black Panther movie will be likely, especially as origin story of vibranium? Would love to see some awesome robots in Phase 2 and 3, where the fuaak are the awesome robots nowadays??!!!!!

    • you know why a black panther film is not likely? cause the black panther show on b.e.t did horrible and was canceled. if black panther can’t pull good ratings on t.v then it will be a huge gamble to put him on the big screen. the last thing marvel wants to do is pull a jonah hex like d.c did. I think the animated serries on b.e.t will be the main reason, if that animated series didn’t happen maybe the black panther movie would be in production right now

      • your so wrong. the Black Panther animated cartoon did not work cause its solely on B.E.T. if it was on cartoon network it would of done better. Marvel set the character to fail when they gave the animation series a weak design and putting it on B.E.T.

also have u forgotten the character got more popular on the Avengers cartoon series.

  23. yeah yeah, more white succesful people who become heroes, can we please get some Captain Marvel, she would be a god addition, also luke cage and Black Panther? please marvel?
