Ant Man Ultron Marvel Comics Ant Man Casting Shortlist Includes Joseph Gordon Levitt & Paul Rudd

Marvel fans sit less than a month away from the release of Thor: The Dark World, the second chapter after Iron Man 3 of Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next two releases from Marvel Studios are both in post-production with Captain America: The Winter Soldier wrapping in June and Guardians of the Galaxy finishing up shooting late last week, and all of these lay the groundwork for Joss Whedon to return to the director’s chair early next year to begin principal photography on The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Thanks to a recent (and curious) release date change, Marvel Studios will also be shooting the first Phase 3 film, Ant-Man, around the same time for a summer 2015 release as well, just two months after The Avengers sequel hits theaters, and director Edgar Wright revealed that he’s back on Los Angeles to begin production.

According to Variety, Marvel may already be far along in the casting process for the lead in their next solo character film and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are the top two candidates for the Ant-Man part, with potentially a third unnamed actor.

Joseph Gordon Levitt writes directs and stars in Don Jon 2013 Ant Man Casting Shortlist Includes Joseph Gordon Levitt & Paul Rudd

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in ‘Don Jon’

This is the first time we’ve hard of funnyman Paul Rudd being namedropped in association with a Marvel movie, so his casting would be as outlandish and comedy-focused as the film itself may prove to be. That being said, Gordon-Levitt may be more of the long-term franchise guy (he’s 12 years younger) and his name repeatedly showed up in association with Guardians of the Galaxy when director James Gunn and the studio were searching hard for the actor to play Star-Lord, a role that also went to a proven comedy talent.

And what a perceived steal from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment that would be, even though JGL wasn’t going to come back to play Batman after his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises anyway.

Rudd’s got Anchorman 2 coming up this December and a relatively clean schedule going forward, while Gordon-Levitt is celebrating the release of his directorial debut Don Jon, a film which embraces a unique comedic style and stylistic format – something Edgar Wright may appreciate given his resume of unique works. Levitt’s comic book movie background also includes Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which hits theaters next year.

Both names do confirm that Marvel Studios is looking for a familiar face and someone proven to have acting chops in drama and comedy, so we’re very curious as to who that third contender may be if they are also looking at someone else. In the meantime, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are soon meeting with Marvel decision-makers so expect more news soon.

JGL or Rudd – who do you prefer? Is it possible both are being looked at for different roles in the film? For all we know, they could both be playing different characters who wear the Ant-Man suit (i.e. Hank Pym and Scott Lang from the books).

[Update: Joseph Gordon-Levitt confirms the Marvel Ant-Man discussions.]

  1. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he could play Blade in the reboot, and I would be happy.

    • Blade reboot isn’t happening any time soon. I wouldn’t want Blade to be white, Sorry.

      • Yes, Blade is Black. Bad enough there are making White Characters Black

        • Why is it bad?

          • I’m not sure. I guess race is SOOOOO important to people.

            • Peter Dinklage for Blade. Aaaallllllll the way!

            • For a comic book character? I don’t think it matters one bit for several characters.

        • Blade should get a reboot, just saying because he’s a very intriguing character and one of my favorites.

        • blade does change so drastically like that.

    • stop….

      • Hammer time.

    • Blade was good as is. Let Wesley Snipes reprise his role.

    • Like how everyone somehow took this sarcastic joke seriously…

  2. Sure Joseph Gordon-Levitt can be funny and he has a lot of charisma but I wouldn’t define him strictly as a ‘funnyman’. His acting talents go beyond that and I think he would be an excellent fit inside the Marvel Universe. Brilliant casting decisions. I wish they could cast every movie out there (well, most).

  3. Both would be fantastic, but I’m really rooting for Paul Rudd to take the mantle of Hank Pym (or Scott Lang?) for the film.

He’s one choice that I wouldn’t mind being Ant-Man. Seeing him, RDJ AND Chris Pratt on screen together for The Avengers 3? Y.E.S.

I would like Ewan McGregor to get the part. A lot of great talent to be had for the part of Ant-Man.

Also, I thought Edgar wanted to film to be less comedy-driven?

    • You know what? My first reaction to Paul Rudd’s possible casting was “WTF?????”, but when you think about it, he can act, however he’s been in so many comedies that it could be a little hard to see him as a superhero. With that said, my first initial reaction to him being cast would be pretty close to that of a Ben Affleck as Batman. At first I hated it, then it sunk in, and now I’m all good with it!

      • EXACTLY! He can be serious, and charismatic.

  4. Paul Rudd? No… Never. Didn’t even have to think about it.

    • Why not? What’s your reasoning for him to not be Hank?

      • He is not an action movie star, and he is Paul Rudd.

      • He cannot pass for an Avenger, OR the scientist supreme.

He will never pass as both.

      • It’s bad enough that in his movies his face is 30 feet high, it will be worse when he is 100 feet tall…

  5. Paul Rudd for sure John Blake can have his day some where else.

    catch my DKR joke???

    • Caught the reference… didn’t realize it was a joke.

  6. Has anybody even thought about Adrien Brody as Ant-Man?

I saw that somewhere on Facebook a couple of weeks back I would love some feedback

    • I would’ve love Bradley Cooper to play Henry Pym because he`s pretty blonde and pretty funny as well (I know it doesn’t matter) but yeah Adrien Brody is also on my list

      • If you’ve seen him in Midnight Meat Train, you’d know he can act. That film is fantastic.

      • @Mercy now that you mention it…. Bradley Cooper might work if handled correctly

  7. I love Gordon Levitt’s work, but don’t want to see him in multiple comic book films like Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans. Paul Rudd would be good as well.

  8. I really want Ewan McGregor to be Ant-Man. But give Rudd the role of Pym because I really want to see Gordon-Levitt as Doctor Strange.

  9. My choice is Aaron Eckhart or JGL

  10. Not Paul Rudd, Simply because I want him as Ted Kord alongside Neil Patrick Harris as Booster Gold.

    • suggestion: ryan gosling as the new human torch in FF reboot.

  11. ….To tell you the truth i see Rudd in the Scott Lang/Antman, more than JGL. I would love to see JGL as Dr. Strange, plus it seems that MARVEL wants JGL for more than just because he is a talent actor. I know DC/WB only wanted him as Batman, but it also seems that it might be in spite to, it will be a ‘ Tough Pill too Swollow’ for WB, too know that MARVEL could have JGL ‘Locked Down’ in a contract…

  12. I love both these guys so I’ll be cool either. I’m not really interested in Antman too, but if they cast one of these two, I’m for sure checking the movie out.

    • And I have to say, Marvel is gathering up some intense actors. Bradley Cooper, Dijimon Hounson, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L Jackson and now maybe one of these two? I can only wonder what Avengers 3′s cast will be.

  13. I really like both these choices, FINALLY a movie with a great potential cast. Either one of these guys would be fantastic, although I think Rudd would surprise more people with the physicality this role demands. He’s due for something unique and different.

  14. I like both of them as actors, I’m just not sure I can see either of them as Hank Pym(and it better be Pym). My choice for Ant-Man in Alan Tudyk, but I would also be cool with Adrian Brody or Jensen Ackles.

    • is*

      • Nathan Fillion for Pym, Dr. Strange, Thanos… and Black Panther while he’s at it.

  15. I like JGL’s physique for this role. He’s got a tiny waist and compact, athletic frame. I would let his Ant-Man crawl up my pants leg anytime!

    • Interesting criteria you’ve come up with there. I can’t say that I feel the same…

  16. Robin as ant-man!

  17. JGL is a bit too young I think and his popularity is starting to get a bit annoying. I could maybe see Paul Rudd if they toned down his Paul Ruddness.I like him in what he does but I don’t think that same character would work for Ant Man. That’s mostly for the writers though.

  18. JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT PLEASE!! HE WOULD KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK JUST AS HE DOES ALL HIS ROLES. PLEASE GIVE HIM A CHANCE, HE WILL BE AMAZING. HE CAN DO A FRANCHISE, RUDD IS FUNNY BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THIS ROLE AND TOO OLD IN MY OPINION

    • Shh…inside voice please.

  19. Paul Rudd. End of discussion.

  20. I could really see JGL playing the part.

  21. I’m not sure about Rudd, but maybe. I like JGL, but feel that he has gotten way overrated in the last couple of years and I just don’t see him in this role.

    • I don’t think JGL has gotten overrated at all, but that his talent is wasted on these blockbuster movies. I’d like to see him do dramas again.

That said, I’d definitely see Ant-man if JGL signed on because he’s always great to watch.

  22. I love JGL, but if I had to choose between the two: Rudd would fit Hank’s charming geeky yet complicated personality much much better

I was actually hoping for a blond actor for the job though, but I trust Marvel studios and their choice

  23. I hope this is for some other character I cant see Paul Rudd with that Ant suit and I also cant take him serious lol

  24. JGL might be a great choice for the part. He’s on my list of people who should play the character. Ewan McGregor, Alan Tudyuk, and Patrick Wilson are on my shortlist.

  25. Rudd would be perfect

  26. Simon Pegg would rock the roll way better than said actors!!

  27. LOL. Paul Rudd is on every “short list.”

    *ahem*

    Sorry, way too easy.

I still say John Krasinski is the inspired choice for this.

  28. Paul Rudd please!

Actually Im tired of watching JGL so much lately. He´s not good/too young for the role anyway.

    • I like Rudd and think he’s a funny guy, but JGL is a much stronger and versatile actor. Your comment that “He’s not good” makes me think you haven’t seen him in movies like Mysterious Skin, Brick, 50/50, etc. The guy did phenomenal work in the 2000s, which is why he’s so much in the spotlight now.

But I think he should move on from effects-driven genre films because his real strength is as a serious actor and it’s time he got back to those kinds of roles.

  29. I don’t feel marvel will ever get JGL for a movie anytime soon! they pay way too little and want way too long of a commitment from an actor, Ido think Antman will be one that they want at least a 2 or 3 film commitment for.

Rudd is just a clown and NOT someone I would look forward to seeing in ANY marvel moie let alone Antman that I have so anticipated but with that clown Antman will be one that quickly gets crossed off the MUST SEE at the theaters list and a wait to see on demand or even DVD release! I just do not see Rudd as a big draw, especially to the mainstream who look at a title like Antman and go MEH!! NOT WAISTING MY NIGHT or MONEY ON THAT!!!

IMO that choice will be Marvels first big Mistake in the MC and they will need to re-cast Antman if they want to make money

    • So….audiences were turned off by an Aussie soap star when they cast him as Thor?

      Your argument makes no sense.
