Ant Man Ultron Marvel Comics Ant Man Casting Shortlist Includes Joseph Gordon Levitt & Paul Rudd

Marvel fans sit less than a month away from the release of Thor: The Dark World, the second chapter after Iron Man 3 of Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next two releases from Marvel Studios are both in post-production with Captain America: The Winter Soldier wrapping in June and Guardians of the Galaxy finishing up shooting late last week, and all of these lay the groundwork for Joss Whedon to return to the director’s chair early next year to begin principal photography on The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Thanks to a recent (and curious) release date change, Marvel Studios will also be shooting the first Phase 3 film, Ant-Man, around the same time for a summer 2015 release as well, just two months after The Avengers sequel hits theaters, and director Edgar Wright revealed that he’s back on Los Angeles to begin production.

According to Variety, Marvel may already be far along in the casting process for the lead in their next solo character film and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are the top two candidates for the Ant-Man part, with potentially a third unnamed actor.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in ‘Don Jon’

This is the first time we’ve hard of funnyman Paul Rudd being namedropped in association with a Marvel movie, so his casting would be as outlandish and comedy-focused as the film itself may prove to be. That being said, Gordon-Levitt may be more of the long-term franchise guy (he’s 12 years younger) and his name repeatedly showed up in association with Guardians of the Galaxy when director James Gunn and the studio were searching hard for the actor to play Star-Lord, a role that also went to a proven comedy talent.

And what a perceived steal from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment that would be, even though JGL wasn’t going to come back to play Batman after his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises anyway.

Rudd’s got Anchorman 2 coming up this December and a relatively clean schedule going forward, while Gordon-Levitt is celebrating the release of his directorial debut Don Jon, a film which embraces a unique comedic style and stylistic format – something Edgar Wright may appreciate given his resume of unique works. Levitt’s comic book movie background also includes Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which hits theaters next year.

Both names do confirm that Marvel Studios is looking for a familiar face and someone proven to have acting chops in drama and comedy, so we’re very curious as to who that third contender may be if they are also looking at someone else. In the meantime, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are soon meeting with Marvel decision-makers so expect more news soon.

JGL or Rudd – who do you prefer? Is it possible both are being looked at for different roles in the film? For all we know, they could both be playing different characters who wear the Ant-Man suit (i.e. Hank Pym and Scott Lang from the books).

[Update: Joseph Gordon-Levitt confirms the Marvel Ant-Man discussions.]

  1. sorta related: Oscar Isaac could make a great Doctor Strange.

    • I want to see a moon knight movie happen and I’m not the only who does.

    • adrien brody will make a better one

    • Yes. But Tom Mison, the actor from Sleepy Hollow I think would great too. End of Line.

  2. Yeah! And what’s DC doing???

Marvel is just so much better in every slurping way. I would feel bad for DC if they weren’t so blah blah blah blah.

    • I think Marvel and DC target different superhero flick audiences. They each go about movies differently. I like DC A LOT better, even in film. But that’s just me, Marvel’s good, too. But it’s like Skittle and M&M’s. Both good candy. Different flavors.

      • I hate how people have this unnecessary rivalry. I’m a hardcore Marvel comic/movie/anything fan and am not all anal about DC.
Anyway it’s crazy to think how Marvel is now like an A-list type company now with the casting.

      • marvel is the A-team and DC is the second rate B-team, sorry but that’s what it looks like right now,DC has to get it’s act together.

        • Yeah both film properties are solid, a few mis-steps for each, but overall I like DC and Marvel the same. No one on this website is biased.

      • I disagree 100%. There is one audience for these movies. DC and Marvel comics fans see ALL comic book movies. Why do you think there is so much whining and complaining on this websites comment section?

      • dc and marvel are both cool in my book. marvel is cooler but it doesn’t take away anything away from dc. Both put out crap and good work too. What makes marvel cooler is they have better sups for the most part

    • right now it appears that DC nation stands for 2nd place compared to marvel right now.

      • if dc got their movie universe back in line all that would mean would be a giant win for the fans. we already have the bad ass movies marvel puts out( and they aren’t perfect and could get a lot better in the future when they reboot it after 2021) It would be the s*** to see the dc universe spin into a jla franchise and then later into a yjl would be bad ass. But that is coming from some one who wants to see either a west coast avengers or ( and I know this will never happen) a new avengers movie in stage 4.

    • Let me tell you this, what’s the point? Who cares if either Marvel or DC are better than the other.

  3. sneak peak of ant-rudd’s lair leaked

    • That Paul Rudd video is one of the weirdest things I have seen in a long time.

    • Brilliant!

    • I was already on team Rudd for Ant-Man and now I DEFINATELY can see him pulling off Ant-Man as a comedic superhero. If they are phasing out the central lead of RDJ as comedic frontman. It would be perfect to phase in Rudd as Ant-Man and comedic frontman in Marvel’s Universe.

My Vote for AntMan goes to Paul Rudd…………

  5. I love Joseph but have to go with Paul Rudd just because it feels more original and have never
seen him in anything close to an action film- I think he’s funnier than Joseph too.

  6. Joel McHale!

  7. idea: matt damon as ant-man.

  8. Paul Rudd please. That would be an awesome and unexpected decision

  9. Nice. I like both of these guys but im leaning toward Paul Rudd. Give him a shot!

  10. I can’t really see either of them as Hank Pym, but out of the two I’d pick JGL hands down. The guy is a great actor and would definitely be able to elevate the idea of an Ant-Man movie (especially to those still on the fence about it)

    • I would prefer Rudd, but I agree that JGL would create some draw.

  11. I would be happy with either, there both good actors and under the direction of Edgar should be good.

  12. Aaron Paul. Let the thought digest for a few moments before deciding.

    • I liked him in Smashed and Breaking Bad but I’d still prefer Paul Rudd or JGL.

  13. Rudd for Pym and JGL for Lang sounds good to me.

  14. Rudd looks a little more fresh-faced hero-ish, but I don’t want this flick to be a comedy ha-ha thing. Let’s make it at least a bit serious! I want to see Hank Pym as Ant-Man, because I am looking forward further ahead to wanting Giant-Man/Goliath and Wasp in Avengers ASAP. A question: since Wright had test-footage supposedly from the movie, if he has not cast a lead, who was playing Ant-Man? I suppose probably just some unnamed stand-in, and that was actually conceptual, and not really from the movie per se (although it looked decent to me). I hope also the costume is not dorky-looking, as that can give a movie character a serious broadside right there. I am cautiously optimistic for this movie, though, as a step towards a positive direction. After all, it’s the closest to anything we’ve got, Goliath/Avengers-wise.

  15. Paul Rudd! Inspired choice. JGL’s name just seems to get tossed about for the sake of it. I like JGL fine, but I don’t want him playing every character in the universe ever…

  16. Paul Rudd

  17. I thought marvel was always better than dc but the new superman movie was really enjoyable and dc’s TV series with arrow is phenomenal …. But about the arrival I think jgl would make a great superhero- I was actually hoping he take up the mantle of batwing…. But having Paul Rudd play any man… The guy really hasn’t played any part of an action hero in any movie nor has he conveyed any depth filled emotion on screen…. He is the male comedic version of Kristen Stewart … I really hope they don’t pick Paul Rudd but I would give the movie a chance anyway if they did and rate it accordingly

    • Not that I want to get in to a cast a black character white or whatever but Batwing is Black and his African heritage is quite important to his story.

  18. Rudd works…

  19. I am a fan of JGL and he does work well in a ensemble cast, yet so does Paul Rudd but Rudd can also imo lead a film better and more importantly could share screen time with RDJ without disappearing into the background.

  20. out of the two I’d rather have Paul Rudd playing Ant-Man. I recall back when James Marsden droped out of X-Men to play Lois Lane’s boyfriend in Superman Returns and I don’t want to read “Joseph Gordon-Levitt quits Ant-Man 3 to star in the Justice League movie!”

  21. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

  22. Paul Rudd For real what is this a comedy whos gonna be Dr.Strange Seth Rogan This movie is gonna suck major

    • Yes it is obviously an action comedy. Do you know who Edgar Wright is? And Paul Rudd is a great actor.

      • Yea he really blew me away in Admission!! Are you on drugs?!?!?!?!?!?
Paul Rudd Sucks He cant hold his own movie any movie he was in that was slightly funny he wasn’t the main actor. Im glad Marvel got him so this Atom Ripoff will crash and burn.

        • @superlad. I’m tired of reading your constant trolling. You do understand that the atom is a composite of Richard Matheson’s Shrinking man novel and the 50′s tv show world of giants? The golden age atom didn’t have any shrinking powers. Superman is the story of moses, batman is both zorro and sherlock holmes. Amazon women? I’ll let you answer that one. Kamandi, again from Matheson I am Legend. If you hate marvel fine. That’s cool and you’re opinion and all, but don’t be foolish enough to believe that YOUR heroes aren’t lifted straight from the pulps, novels, movies, ancient lore and myth. Research any of them.

          • I guess the truth hurts

            • Does it? You’re a bellend

              • Thats ironic coming from a Marvel pusswad

                • Hahahahaha. You literally know nothing. And by the way, I prefer DC movies for most part to marvel’s so whatcha got for me now ya big anomynous silly. There is no marvel/DC war by the way so enjoy hating things all by yourself.

                  • Well you have great taste in movies i see. I must apologize for what I said. It was low and below the belt and really disrespectful so I apologize to referring to you as Marvel.

          • + DC bought or brought other characters from other companies.

  23. I thought John Krasinski would also be in the running.

  24. Really not looking forward to this movie anymore

  25. Paul Rudd was in Halloween: Curse Of Micheal Myers. So, if need be, he can pull off serious

  26. I like both:))

  27. I like JGL as much as the next person, but I can’t see him play Pym at all. Maybe Lang, by a big stretch… but still too much of a baby face for me. Marvel has always casted actors who looked the part, close to the comics version. JGL looks nothing like Pym, or even Lang. I’m not saying he’s not a great actor, but he’s not fitting the part, IMO.

Paul Rudd, I don’t know him very well. But out of the two, I’d say he looks more like the part, as long as they dye his hair ;-) You can’t have a black-haired Pym.

  28. why do people keep saying jgl is in too many things? hes been in a few movies the past couple of years hes just becoming a rising star is all, and as though it seems people prefer Rudd, Jgl deserves to do something different I dont wanna be that guy that criticizes an actor before seeing them but Paul Rudd just doesnt seem good

  29. I think they both are cool, it is really hard to choose one.
