Anne Hathaway Is Game For A ‘Catwoman’ Spinoff

anne hathaway catwoman movie Anne Hathaway Is Game For A Catwoman Spinoff

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises is (obviously) the trending topic of discussion, and Anne Hathaway’s performance as Selina Kyle is widely considered one of the film’s highlights. So… will the Cat-burglar be getting her own vehicle?

Hathaway had made it known that she’s interested in a spinoff, so long as it maintains tonal continuity with the Nolan-verse iteration of the feline femme fatale. The actress is certainly not alone, as many fans are eager for a Catwoman movie that wipes away memories of Halle Berry’s solo outing as the character.

Digital Spy asked Hathaway about the idea, and she responded:

“I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if it’s with the right people. She lives in [Nolan’s Gotham City] and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.”

The Oscar-nominated actress expounded on her stance towards a Catwoman spinoff, while discussing her approach to tackling the iconic Batman antiheroine role:

“I didn’t want to focus on the other peoples’ interpretation of [Catwoman] because I didn’t see where that would get me; it would only be a rehashing of something already done – and done very well. I thought it was probably best to focus on being a part of Chris Nolan’s Gotham City.”

Catwoman The Dark Knight Rises Anne Hathaway Is Game For A Catwoman Spinoff

Nolan has made it known that he has no plans to serve as a central creative guide in the developing DC comic book movie universe. However, that doesn’t exclude the possibility of a Catwoman movie where Nolan serves in a secondary position and helps get the project off the ground (as he did with Man of Steel).

The filmmaker offered Access Hollywood his thoughts on a Catwoman spinoff:

“Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s a delight to watch her perform, the things she does in those heels is not to be taken lightly… I certainly think she deserves [her own solo movie], she’s incredible.”

This Catwoman movie talk from Hathaway and Nolan puts the ball into play in the court of public opinion (if nothing else). Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning: Dark Knight Rises avoids an intimate exploration of Selina Kyle’s backstory, so there is worthwhile material for a spinoff to explore.

  1. I’ll see any movie she wants to do, especially if she continues to do nudity. :)

BUT, I agree that TDKR should be the end of the story for that particular version, and any spinoff, whether it is partially in the “Nolanverse” or not, will not serve the greater good of a very well done trilogy. Anything “extra” that would be done in that particular playground will do nothing but tarnish the trilogy.

If Ms. Hathaway wants to do a physical crime drama action film type of thing again, I’d be down with that. She has yet again proved her acting chops.

    • When has she ever done nudity?

      • lol, have you been living under a rock? its hard to find her not doing nudity in films
        see….
        Havoc
        One Day
        Love & Other Drugs
        Brokeback Mountain
        Valentines day

        • Wow I never knew that! I must be living under a rock :O

      • @jakob

LOL, I think the producers have to pay her extra to keep her clothes on… She’s like Milla…

        • LOL, for sure.

      • at work we actually play what movie hasn’t anne hathaway been nude in. or we pretend we’re her in movies she hasn’t done and while we re-enact scenes we’ll take our shirts off.

    • Come on catwoman, spin off please. Don’t be shy..

  2. I was one of the first people up in arms about her being cast as Catwoman and I certainly wasnt alone in this thought but having now seen the end result I eat my words, She blew my mind as Selena Kyle, what a phenomenal job she did, loved every scene she was in. I swa is she is up for the task and Nolan has a hand in it why not have her in a spin off? I will wait patiently with much hope of seeing Anne Hathaway reprise her role.

  3. Wene I heard Ms. Hathway was going to play catwoman I wasn’t sure about it. But after seeing the movie I have to say she was FANTISTIC. Now i’m glad she turned down doing Wonder Woman. And if they make another Catwoman movie I hope it will be better that C***P Ms. Halley Berry made. Ms. Berry’s a good actress but nobody could have done anything with that script.

  4. I still think she looks a little weird as catwoman, but luckily her acting saved it from looking as ridiculous as she looked in the screenshots…

  5. I think a Robin spin off will be a good idea, cause I heard at the end of “The Dark Knight Rises” Joseph Gordon Levitt who played John Blake is trying to take Bruce Wayne’s place. I think we should drop this Catwoman off and get on to “The Boy Wonder”.

    • @Danny

Seriously, if you’re going to talk about something that happens at the end of a movie, whether you’ve seen it yourself or you just heard about it. PUT A SPOILER ALERT!!! I’ve seen the movie, but some people still have not. Stop assuming everyone has seen the movie…

    • I think Joseph Gordon Levitt in another movie is more likely than Anne Hathaway but I would go see anything with either of them or Christian Bale.

  6. Hathaway was phenomenal in TDKR, so I would very excited for this. However, I seriously doubt Hathaway would get involved unless Nolan is heavily influencing this progress, and I seriously doubt he will direct another superhero movie. Perhaps he will just serve as producer, but IMO I just can’t see this happening. I guess it’s more of a gut feeling than an actual argument, but it’s how I feel.

Furthermore, the only way I can see this happening is if this is a prequel.

It wouldn’t make sense to continue the storyline after TDKR, as Hathaway is now settling down with Bruce, so if there is a Catwoman movie, Bruce would either need to be in it, or he would need to be mentioned. And either way, it would completely discount the entire ending of TDKR, where Bruce is retired and finally settling down with a woman.

I suppose it could work as a prequel, though. But, as others here said, I feel that one of the best parts of her character is the fact that shes so mysterious, and I feel that revealing her backstory will kinda give up that whole mysterious aspect of her character.

        • MORE OF THE SAME SPOILERS-

Yes, he fixed the autopilot, but that doesn’t determine anything. You see him driving the plane out into the ocean, and so it would be nearly impossible for him to get away in time…
Also, remember when Alfred was talking to Bruce in the Batcave early in the movie? Bruce said something about Alfred being afraid that he would fail (not at protecting Gotham but at protecting himself) and Alfred replying that he was afraid that Bruce wanted to. Maybe that’s not supposed to mean anything… but still.
But whatever it is the ending meant, I doubt its as simple as it appears.

    • Technically it could take place during the time line of BB, TDK and TDKR.

  7. I don’t think any of these ideas – catwoman or robin – will happen. Well, definitely not by Nolan. He is done with all this, and in my opinion, has done it all very well. Perhaps, maybe and highly unlikely but a glimmer of hope exists that he might back in some capacity and contribute to an eventual (like 5 or 10 years from now) Justice League movie. Probably as a producer if we’re lucky. I don’t think he will ever again be a part of any future DC hero movie as a director.

Am I the only one who noticed the Nightwing symbol on the spotlight at the end. Nolan said he was done with Batman, he didn’t say anything about Nightwing. I think Nightwing is more plausible than a Robin or Catwoman story. Although, with Anne Hathaway now showing interest in that project anything is possible.

  8. oh yeah, and this is a great version of catwoman. I would say one of the highlights of the movie, and I was very sceptical about Hathaway pulling this off and she certainly seemed like an odd casting choice, but that’s probably because my idea of the character had always had Michele Pfeiffer written all over it. Her portrayal has changed my mind. She IS the best Catwoman thus far.

  9. As successful as Ms. Hathaway is as Catwoman, I think it would be better if she just left alone. She completely owned the role though. Absolutely, the surprising gem of the film.

  10. Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rising is hardcore, sexy, strong, beautiful and complex so I say go for a spinoff trilogy,it would be the perfect way to start-up the non-existent female super hero genre, and DC better hurry before Marvel does a spin-off for The Avenger’s Black Widow.

  11. By the way THE DARK KNIGHT RISES was amazing, possibly the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen next to the first Superman movie with Christopher Reeves IMO. PLEASE GO SEE AND SUPPORT THIS MOVIE!Show the nation and the world us movies fans and genre geeks we not be denied the joy of going to the movie theaters by cowardly and deranged ass-holes like that sub human monster in Colorado.

  12. I was one of few people who didn’t question the decision made to cast Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle. I’ve been a fan of hers since Brokeback Mountain and I knew the fact that she seems so innocent and unthreatening would actually work in her favor since even though it appears she’s incapable of being a badass, she can actually be a badass.

However, I’m totally opposed to a Catwoman film because she was already perfect. She left people wanting more and that’s a testament to her exquisite performance in TDKR not necessarily an indication that she needs her own film. I think it’s worth pointing out that a lot of her scenes were with Christian Bale with whom she had astonishing chemistry, which amplified both actors’ presence on screen. I read an interview where Anne said both Chris Nolan’s vision for the character and Christian Bale’s energy as Batman/Bruce Wayne helped tremendously in her character coming to life. None of those things would be fixtures in her own film.

Plus, how on earth would a Catwoman film keep in continuity with Chris Nolan’s trilogy?! Selina even says in TDKR that she’s not living the life the way she wants but the way she has to. The ending for both her and Bruce is perfect because they’ve both started fresh together.

I’m usually always in complete agreement with Hathaway whenever I read a statement/interview of hers but if she really does think a solo film could work, I’m going to have to admit that I couldn’t disagree more.

  13. Wow, getting hard to read any Batman related threads because people just can’t seem to post w/o including spoiler information.

The movie has only been out for 4 freakin’ days, give everyone a chance to see it for hell sakes.

    • @mongoose

Seriously, I hate this egocentric mindset everyone now-a-days have… It’s like the believe since they’ve seen the movie, everyone else must have too, so they just blurt out the endings of movies without so-much of a spoiler alert… Idiots…

  14. Have her do a spinoff where nightwing was sent by batman to capture her f*** yea!

  15. I’m not only interested in a dark, serious Catwoman spinoff, I’m interested in the DC films living only in Nolan’s vision of the world. Seems Man of Steel will go down this path, thank goodness.

The ending of TDKR was absolutely amazing and easily could be the end but with Christian Bale saying he would be open to doing another if Nolan presented the script I think it is a must. All other big movies are done i.e. Harry Potter and Twilight. We need another Batman. Reprise the roles of Batman Commisioner Gordon Catwoman and John Blake and make the villian The Riddler played by Ed Norton, Leonardo DiCapprio, or Johnny Depp and The Penguin played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Start the movie Robin and Gordon stopping crime but Robin needs to be properly trained so Batman and Catwoman must return. Warner Brothers would make so much more money if they made one last movie I think they should go for it.

    • There should really be a sarcasm font in case I missed it here completely.
Your arguments really, for me, transpired the decay of art and society we experience everyday.
Always more and bigger … where does that lead us? WHY???

Why make another one? The (conclusion of the) trilogy, for me, was perfect and to make another movie, even so much as a spinoff would be a huge disappointment.

Nolan, Whedon, Scott (Ridley) [...] – those people deserve a great deal of respect for the tremendous amount of passion and hard work they put in the their universes. True idealists. You may of course fantasise, but I on the other hand applaud Nolan for making the decision of hereby concluding his story. I wouldn’t like to have it any other way.

      • @4reS

May I ask you why the conclusion was so perfect for you? Despite contradicting the themes of the prior two movies, it was so sugary sweet that I almost vomited (same with Harry Potter, I LOVED that series and the end was just too much wish fulfillment). Also, I really never understood how or why the two characters at the end managed to get together (I am only being so vague so as to avoid SPOILERS). The movie didn’t bother to ever develop any sort of meaningful relationship between the two and it made pretty much no sense for the guy to end up with her.

Nolan spent two films building a complex, thematically unified world with characters of conviction, and then undid all of his excellent and hard work to provide a happy (and in Blake’s case WAY over the top) ending.

That’s not to say DKR was a bad movie (although it can’t really claim to be anything above mediocre), but I just felt the ending departed from the great groundwork laid prior.

  17. Does anyone besides me think Nolan should do whatever movie he wants next, then after that come back with The Dark Knight Returns? with…..

  18. Stunning Job, Anne!

  19. Sorry, People I didn’t to mention the rest dont feel bad about it.

    The movie was brilliant

  20. Yeah, sure, why not? I enjoyed her take on Selina Kyle in TDKR. She’s sly, mysterious, witty, and kicks ass while looking indomitably sexy. I think she’d make for an interesting solo exploration project given a good director (comparable to Nolan).

    • Hugor Hill??

  21. i really wanted to love this movie, but the fact is, there are so many plot holes and the pacing was horrible, all in all i liked it and want to see it again and pick it apart, but Nolan screwed up on the storytelling. great acting and visual scope saved the movie but as it stands now, batman begins is best followed by dark knight then dark knight rises.

    • I suppose everyone has an opinion Mr T and mine differs to yours in this case, TDK was the best for me. Can you just point out these plot holes? Most, if not all, have been filled on a previous forum on this site.

  22. No spin off please, as fit and good as she was there was only limited screen time so an entire 2 hour movie of her and (say) Poison Ivy or MR Freeze would not be a great idea to me. Warner Bros. are not going to use Penguin, Riddler, Deadshot, Black Mask or any of the villains that they could use for a potential Batman sequel so Catwoman will be left with the unrealistic garbage.

  23. The awfulness of TDKR has tarnished the whole trilogy for me, I embrace a reboot and want Batman back to his roots, stalking the streets taking out the bad guys, not immortalised in bronze a la Rocky! Wtf

Harry Knowles has reviewed TDKR and is spot on, bare in mind that this guy loves every movie made, for him to be profoundly disappointed in a movie speaks volumes!

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/57109

  24. if this catwoman is made, they better only spend 30 mil on it because otherwise i smell a flop on arrival. funniest story of day!

  25. To be honest while I thought Hathaway absolutely nailed the look, I found her characterisation to be pretty flat. There simply wasn’t that much there behind the mask.

  26. Spoiler Alert !! Considering the ending it would be difficult to do a Catwoman movie since she now has a ” clean slate”. But a prequel would be cool. I say Joseph Gordon Levitt as Nightwing is a better choice.

  27. i honeslty dont understand these negative reviews. HIS VISION WAS TO MAKE BATMAN MORE REALISTIC WHICH HE ACCOMPLISHED! the joker destroyed everything batman stood for, protected, and loved. this isnt a comic book where he brushes the dirt off his shoulders and continues bashing skulls or some cheesy spin off that confuses people out of the minds. and batman obviously isnt the same in the comics. i dont care who you are, this was made to be realistic and bruce is clearly still a person and not as dark and closed as in the comics. i loved this trilogy and tip my hat to nolan for his adaption of the batman universe

  28. Despite the Dark Knight Rises being the second most-disappointing film of the summer (saved only by Prometheus), Hathaway definitely exceeded my expectations as Catwoman. That being said i HOPE that whoever wrote her barrage of terrible and awful dialogue is not hired to touch a spinoff. I haven’t seen an actor spout off so many wretched lines since Transformers. I can’t even describe how disappointed I was to hear a Catwoman utter the moronic line “Whats the matter? Cat got your tongue” in a Nolan Bat-film. Ugh.

  29. A robin spinoff would be great! As long as they tell a great story behind him as far as catwomen I would love to see that as well but please! Please! Have the black mask and the no face society in it!
