Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises is (obviously) the trending topic of discussion, and Anne Hathaway’s performance as Selina Kyle is widely considered one of the film’s highlights. So… will the Cat-burglar be getting her own vehicle?

Hathaway had made it known that she’s interested in a spinoff, so long as it maintains tonal continuity with the Nolan-verse iteration of the feline femme fatale. The actress is certainly not alone, as many fans are eager for a Catwoman movie that wipes away memories of Halle Berry’s solo outing as the character.

Digital Spy asked Hathaway about the idea, and she responded:

“I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if it’s with the right people. She lives in [Nolan’s Gotham City] and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.”

The Oscar-nominated actress expounded on her stance towards a Catwoman spinoff, while discussing her approach to tackling the iconic Batman antiheroine role:

“I didn’t want to focus on the other peoples’ interpretation of [Catwoman] because I didn’t see where that would get me; it would only be a rehashing of something already done – and done very well. I thought it was probably best to focus on being a part of Chris Nolan’s Gotham City.”

Catwoman The Dark Knight Rises Anne Hathaway Is Game For A Catwoman Spinoff

Nolan has made it known that he has no plans to serve as a central creative guide in the developing DC comic book movie universe. However, that doesn’t exclude the possibility of a Catwoman movie where Nolan serves in a secondary position and helps get the project off the ground (as he did with Man of Steel).

The filmmaker offered Access Hollywood his thoughts on a Catwoman spinoff:

“Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s a delight to watch her perform, the things she does in those heels is not to be taken lightly… I certainly think she deserves [her own solo movie], she’s incredible.”

This Catwoman movie talk from Hathaway and Nolan puts the ball into play in the court of public opinion (if nothing else). Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning: Dark Knight Rises avoids an intimate exploration of Selina Kyle’s backstory, so there is worthwhile material for a spinoff to explore.

  1. I know this will never happen but they should just make a Catwoman and Black Widow team up movie. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

    • You’re right it wouldn’t happen. Catwoman is DC, and Black Widow in Marvel.

      • thank you captain obvious

        • Also Anne can act, Scarlett Johansson was half dead througout the movie. She was only there for her ass, you have to admit it. Talentless wh0r3.

          • BaneHardy:

I totally agree. No true words have been said. Nolan got it absolutely right this time with his female leads.

            • OOPS!

              “Truer” not “true”.

          • BaneHardy: Are you for real? Seriously, man? Scarlett is a really amazing actress. People seem to act like just because she has a nice ass she can’t act. I’ve loved following her career, and have never thought she was a bad actress- the opposite, really.

I’m so sick of people wanting to compare Scarlett to Anne or Catwoman to the Black Widow. Completely different actresses/characters. Love them both, and both kicked ass. Their characters are not in the same place, or doing the same types of things, so of course the actresses had super different approaches.

            • Scarjo really can’t act…at all. It’s unfair when an actor/actress is assumed untalented because of an attractive appearance, but seriously, Johansson is about as wooden, flat, and boring as they come. Dead behind the eyes, etc. There’s a reason no one takes her seriously in Hollywood and it ain’t because of her ass.

  2. I’m commenting simply to state that commenting on this, while not spoiling aspects of TDKR, is impossible. One could even make the argument that this story itself is a spoiler. – just saying. I’d love to actually comment, but I can’t. lol

    • lmao to Travis

  3. Since Nolan’s Gotham City is never again to be established
by the people who have made that Gotham City it is safe
to assume we have seen the last of her Catwoman.

  4. No. Please no.

    • Please no more of the horse face, buck toothed Hathaway.

      • but her dumper was so nice on the batpod.

        • That was a stunt double you inbred retard….

      • You really just do NOT have any original thoughts, do you? Hathaway has proven herself in this role already.

Plus, you might want look up the definitions of the insults you enjoy throwing around…I don’t think you know what they mean.

        It’s rather sad…

  5. Been there, done that. No thanks! Plus, I have always thought that Catwoman is just a lame character, period.

  6. I don’t know. She did a fine job but not to the point where I just want to explore her all that much. Plus how does that square with the ending? Anyway…I’d be much more interested in seeing some sort of prequel based on Bane’s rise to power.

  7. She was good in the movie – but please no to a spinoff.

Let this universe “die” in peace, with a great conclusion (IMO).

    • Agreed, even though Hathaway was amazing as Selina Kyle and JGL carried the second act as John Blake, there shouldn’t be any spinoffs. No Catwoman, no Nightwing, no Robin, no Batman Beyond, etc.

  8. You know anne hathaway surprised me as catwoman. I would definatly love to see a spin off since I am a catwoman fan since I was a kid and the last one tore me up. So I call this redemption.

  9. To be honest I say No.

Even though I thought she was great in the role I don’t want to see her character or any other character (wink-wink) established in Nolans Gotham to get their own film.
The story’s over. And that’s how I want it to stay. I know some people will say that if it’s truly over why show certain things at the end of the film? I just think it was a nice twist and a nod to fans but IMO that’s all it was and all it should be.

    • Who says it needs to be beyond where DKR left off? Make it a story that takes place anytime before DKR begins. Batman obviously was in retirement for 8 years prior to DKR. There is no reason she can’t have a movie based it that time & can possibly lead up to how she because so know among the criminals in town such as Dagget.

  10. I don’t know how they’d do it though, story-wise (seeing as where the film ended and her place there) except if the movie takes place before the events of TDKR…

Still, ever thought, IMO, she was one of the best parts of the film, I’m not so sure I’d be THAT excited for spin-off.

  11. Um… Prequel? Selina Kyle’s past as a hooker, her discovery that she’s most likely Carmine Falcone’s illegitimate daughter? (As detailed in ‘Batman: The Long Halloween’ and ‘Batman: Dark Victory.’) Her training as a thief, career pulling heists, and eventual reputation leading to her having many enemies.

Our own Ben Moore picked a great Catwoman comic that could be a film:

A film ending in a mid-credits scene where Selina Kyle – thinking she’s escaped clean – is approached in a cafe in a remote part of the world by none other Talia al Ghul.

There’s plenty of story to tell – and it could be part Nolan-verse, part something new.

    • Hooker backstory? Are you f’ing serious? Is there a single male author on Earth who can write a female character w/out some salacious, degrading personal details to rationalize her negative affect? Comic book geeks…ick.

      • um Wonder Woman, Supergirl, powergirl, Storm, wasp, Hawk Girl, Fire and Ice, Star girl….get your facts right and don’t make fun of comic book geeks, they are humans too.

  12. SPOILER ALERT:
Anne Hathaway was awesome and i think a Catwoman prequel would be awesome. Have it end with her int he maid outfit from the beginning of TDKR.

Nolan def set this universe up to continue…otherwise whats the point of having John Blake (Robin) find the BatCave etc??? I really hope Jonathan Nolan, Zack Synder, or someone else just as knowledgeable about this version of Batman takes the helm. Hell i hope they throw a dumptruck of $$$ at Chris Nolan to at least act as a Producer on the next movie.

The story needs to continue. If it was designed not to then Batman should have died out right. just IMO, my hope is for a Nightwing/Batman 2.0/Robin&Batman versus Leo DiCaprio as the Riddler.

    • What’s the point? All good stories leave the audience (or reader) feeling like the story would continue without them after the end. The ending you’re talking about is PERFECT for not creating any more films, because it feels like the saga would continue without us.

  13. i was a HUGE fan of her in the moive. But that doesnt mean i want an entire movie of the character. She was like a wonderfuly added “spice” to an entire dish.

  14. I think it’s the right moment for more DC heroes being filmed through movies since many marvel heroes have been filmed and shown their good quality. At this point, this character is popular and hathaway could name her role as the best catwoman ever probably.

So I vote yes for Catwoman spin-off.

In addition it would be lovely if other DC characters like Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow being planned seriously as upcoming DC big movies. And they can build up the story of The Justice League of America characters background.

  15. Johnny said – “She did a fine job but not to the point where I just want to explore her all that much.”

I would like to explore her…. if you know what I mean. Lol

Seriously though. I’d be interested in a spin off movie… but I really don’t see that happening.

  16. I’m guessing this would be a David Goyer project–at best. I’m not an Anne Hathaway fan, but she did better than I expected. I will say that she seemed to have some trouble balancing in the action sequences where she was physically active and her Selina Kyle was a little too uneven. Take her out of the Bat-world and I’m not sure Catwoman’s an interesting enough anti-hero.

    • Put her on the run from a villain like Black Mask and have her reaching Wayne Manor w/Alfred there…that could be fun. I did like that Nolan brought Holly into the picture. Maybe cast Michael Madsen as Slam Bradley. I’d gladly watch Gary Oldman portray Gordon again, too. Perhaps a cameo from Batgirl?

  17. I’d love to see one, sure. Maybe explain the relationship to Holly Robinson (Juno Temple’s character in the movie) that left a few unanswered questions as well as a few other aspects of the character we didn’t get to see in this movie.

  18. Yes to the spinoff!! I would love to see that!!

  19. um talia dies!!!! duh!!!!! so no that wont work……a prequl would work tell us her backstory where she got the gadtes to make it work..

    • This article is about a CATWOMAN spin off… nobody said anything about Talia…

  20. NO NO NO NO!!! NO Catwoman spin offs. BAD IDEA!

  21. I would love love love this! Hathaway was fantastic, but it would have to be a prequel, perhaps one within that 8 years between Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises where she makes all those headlines we see in their research.

  22. Sorry but Catwoman without the Batman interaction just makes her a thief. Seeing her turned into some sort of “anti-hero” and possibly going up against some of Batman’s other foes sounds and feels wrong.

  23. I would certainly go see a catwoman spin-off if it was with Anne.

  24. Yea, how about no. Not interested.

  25. There are some characters who thrive on how mysterious they are. Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises is one of them. It helps her character that there’s this giant question mark looming over her that gets pointed to from time to time. If you fill that in in another movie, then it would definitely change the perception of her character in TDKR.

It would be like making a movie, or perhaps a series of movies, that fill in the back-story of Darth Vader…It just wouldn’t work and it would totally change his character dynamic.

    • Lol I like what you did there.

  26. It would be awesome to see her get a spinoff, I don’t like the idea of a prequel or a origins story.. The writers are smart enough to make something work for her after the events in TDKR. Give her a reason to come out. I see more of a 007, Bourne vibe with her which Anne will be great at pulling off… Her switch between a weak women in need of help to the “cat” was amazing.

  27. She was good in the movie, but the character to me is mainly a side character.

  28. I’d like to see that movie. Anne Hathaway was the best thing about TDKR.

  29. I’d see it. They could have it take place between TDK and TDKR (since there ia an eight ear gap). Show how she came by those skills and toys…
