Yesterday Screen Rant reported that director Bryan Singer is interested in returning to the X-Men franchise, six years after directing X2. Today we have another member of the X-Men team, Anna Paquin (who played Rogue in the first three movies), showing interest in doing another X-Men movie as well – in this case, the upcoming X-Men: First Class.
In a recent interview with IGN, Paquin talked a bit about the X-Men movies she’s starred in so far, and commented on her potential return to the series. When X-Men: First Class was first announced, Variety reported that the characters most likely to appear in the film would be Rogue, Iceman, Angel, Jubilee, Colossus and Shadowcat, amongst others. So does Paquin see herself returning as Rogue in the First Class spin-off?:
“Absolutely. Yeah… I would hope I could do a little bit more action next time, though. I kind of find it ironic that I did three big action films and did, actually, no action whatsoever. I mean I got some really amazing emotional story moments, but I didn’t really get to do the physical stuff.”
“You know, as much as I loved doing those films I was kind of like, ‘OK, so when do I get to beat someone up? When do I get to steal some powers?’ You know Sookie [Paquin's True Blood character] gets to do more action than Rogue ever did. So I’m just putting that out there. More action please, for next time.”
On top of the possible First Class character roster given by Variety, Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes speculated – based on the information we have about past and future X-Men projects – that the First Class line-up will probably include the likes of Beast, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Jean Grey and Storm. Sadly, according to X-Men producer Lauren Shuler-Donner, the ever-popular Gambit will not appear in X-Men: First Class, mainly due to continuity issues (although as Rob Keyes pointed out in his post, Donner’s reasoning doesn’t make much sense).
Screen Rant also reported on Gambit actor Taylor Kitsch’s suggestion of a possible X-Men spinoff featuring Gambit and Rogue. Kitsch said he would love to work with Paquin, and that it would be cool to have Gambit and Rogue in a film together. However, as Rob Keyes again pointed out, in the continuity of the existing X-Men movies, Rogue is introduced twenty years after Gambit’s appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which would mean (if we follow continuity) a huge age gap between the two lovers.
Personally, I think they should just leave out the Gambit/Rogue relationship, simply because it poses too much of a problem for the established X-Men continuity. Although I’m not opposed to the idea of more X-Men spin-offs (even though Wolverine didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped), I would much rather them just continue on with the continuity established by the X-Men trilogy. To put it simply: they should forge ahead and make X-Men 4 using all the characters we know already (including Paquin as Rogue) while hopefully introducing a few new ones.

X-men 1 = good
x-men 2 = great
x-men 3 = not so good
x-men origins = HORRIBLE
At this point these movies are just getting worse and worse. I would just stop and wait 20 years for a reboot but you know that wont fly with the studio.
Personally, I would just pretend x-men origins never happened but i know the studio wont do that. I would like to see gambit, nightcrawler, and beast in the next one; being as to how they are great x-men characters that offer a lot of depth to their personalities.
If it takes place in the past, before x-men 1, you can include gambit and keep the whole continuity going. Besides the older mutanats are much better characters and actors than teh yuonger ones. A movie centralized around iceman, rogue, kitty, shawdowcat, collusus, etc would BOMB in the theaters- critically moreover than financially- than a movie with the older characters.
I read up that they DO INDEED plan on having the older characaters and i hope they stay loyal to that statement.
Here we can spawn off into a different story and replace some of the older actors(such as Halle Berry because you know she is going to want more air time and more money) with younger ones.
Wolverine DOES NOT need to be in the movie..adding gambit, bringing back nightcrawler, beast, and Cyclops would def make up for Wolverine with the fans. You can also go another route with the villain and not sign on the cockeyed “Sir” Ian McKEllan; as he will want more money and more airtime. Here they can go with a villain like Mr. Sinister who was also very very popular. even Apololypse wouldnt be that bad of an idea if they can manage to pull it off correctly.
Main thing would be to come up with a good story and have it centralize around one mutant (Gambit, Cyclops, Jean for example)…if tehy do it right they might be able to squeeze out 1 more decent flick from teh franchise.
FOr the movie to be good
Old chracaters (Gambit, cyclops,s beast, nightcrawler etc) IN
Young Chracaters(ROgue, ICEman, shadowcast, Jubilee, ect) OUT
WOlverine DOES NOT need to be in the movie
Magneto DOES NOT need to be the villain
Addition of Gambit, nightcrawler, Beast, and keeping Cyclops should sustain fans.
Halle Berry, Ian McCellan, the guy that plays Cyclops could be recasted if they are asking for too much money or airtime
Throw in a new villain like Mr. Sinister or Apocolypse (but please try and limit the amount of CGI)
Prequel will suceed sequel will fail
Bryan Singer does not need to come back…need a visionary director like Del Toro, Abrams, even Joss whedon from Buffy….Need someone that is capable of creating an entire new world in his mind and implementing it on screen.
Think more STORY and less ACTION…but dont get me wrong action IS NEEDED
Maybe a darker atmosphere rather than a lighter atmosphere will work.
Must have the movie centralize around 1 character. Maybe it could be about Gambit and how and why he left teh X-men and what happened to him before X-men 1,2,3…or about Beast (although I dont think the audience would be as interestedin Beast role)…Cyclops would also work (but please recast the actor)

First off, you can’t have nightcrawler in First Class. He doesn’t meet the X-Men until X2.
Also I really wish people would get off Halle Berry’s back about wanting more to do in the movies. I’m glad she fought to get Storm a bigger role in the movies. Storm deserves that.
Not just that but i bet if it was Hugh Jackman fingting to have more to do in a movie…no one would say s***! Such a double standard. I am looking foward to First Class and X-Men 4 as long as they do them right. Can’t wait to see who will play young Storm and Jean.
I totally agree with you Nick Storm should have a bigger role and more to do in the movie after all is she not one of the Leaders of the UNCANNY X Men?? so i say fight on Halle and fight for the other strong women characters in the comic and movies and THANK YOU Ms BERRY for coming back for more STORM roles.
Personally, I don’t really like where the X-Men movies have gone, none of them. They toe the line of the traditional comics but deviate just far enough to be annoying.
As far as Rogue and Gambit are concerned, if they (Fox) ever want to be able to make a movie with the two lovers, they’re either going to have to be alright with an enormous age gap or do some fancy two stepping.
considering that there can be X Men first class with young versions of the original characters sounds like it could be a good movie. It could also be good to give rogue more action activities, considering the amazing powers she got. I would also consider that rogue and gambit movie, the possibilities or optional, time traveling, rogue making gambit young again so many things you can do to make the ages not a problem. The producers should consider these possibilities along with others. I look forward to seeing these new X-men movies.
Considering that they have hacked apart any hope for a descent X-men movie they should quit while they are behind. The movies are horrible,they do not follow the comics at all in hopes of pleasing people who do not even care about the X-men. The comic to movie adaptations should stop considering it is just movie studios trying to make a buck and taking a huge dump on the actual fans. Here’s to hoping Fox goes bankrupt!
i really want to see beak,chamber.husk,andgel salvador,and more of the original cast,but not so much wolverine. they need rogue and gambit,iceman,angel,nightcrawler,colossus,and bring back cyclops.they also need to do the sentinle story but they should do that in first class not x-men 4.

I have to agree, all the movies have been horrible. Hugh Jackman is amazing as Wolverine though ill give them that! I really am not fond of that actress playing rogue, she doesnt resemble the comic book rogue at all. I am not fond of the actor playing gambit, he resembles the comic book character I guess but just isn’t cutting it. I do not like where they have gone with the characters and storyline. Wolverine was a better movie, a step in the right direction…but xmen 4 is out of the question unless they write a better script and cast better.

Does Fox plan to make an X-men 4? i heard rumors of it but nothin concrete.
I thought of a way to save the films. simple really get someone who has a power to maniplulate time. To creat a totaly new timeline that would fit more into the comic book style and the cartoon and possibly some how tie in a rouge and gambit love story.
I like the gambit that was used in wolvarine origins he is good enough and young enough.
rouge get some super hot bouncy girl from play boy to play her and give back her awsome powers from the comics and the cartoon.
The folks responsible for bringing X-Men to the big screen need to return to the drawing board. There are so many great storylines over the years, a fresh start is whats needed. Here are a few greats 1) Inferno – It could all begin with Colosuss’s sister and hell is unleashed on earth. 2) The Brood – like x-men vs. Aliens, decent! and maybe 3) The Hellfire Club/Reavers – technology vs. mutants, and finally some decent sentinals also 4) Bring Bishop from the future!!! And I’m a little tired of all the attention on Wolvy. Immortality/indestructible bodies are are BORING!!! Bring on Arcade and murderworld!

I think you have a point. The only thing i found disturbing about the X-men films was they were all too much focused on Wolverine. If they made a X-men 4 and or more sequels, they need to introduce new members, new villains, and other new characters.
BAMPF!!! Chrisj right on! I’ve also had enough of the humans vs. mutants storyline. Why are all the humans so dumb, they should admire the mutants, not force them to register. (with the exception of Uncanny X-men 225-227 – the fall of the mutants storyline) I realize the natural human reaction is to fear those who are different, but it will still be a movie in the end – ENTERTAINMENT. And the films have not been satisfactory thus far, at least for the old school fans. And the original charm of Wolverine was his mystery, he had no past… wolvy should be left in the dark where he likes it. Here’s a novel idea, send Prof X into space, and have Magneto lead the x-men… to hopefully a real, emotional storyline.
I have been waiting for a rogue and gambit movie for like ever and would really like to see Anna reprise her role as rogue and Taylor as gambit. a lot of fans of the rogue and gambit relationship, I’m sure can say the same.
making movies is about what the fans want to see, just like they did iron man, they listen to what the fans wanted to see and they took from that. And look how awesome that turned out, you just need great script and director and awesome actors.
and they could start out in the beginning with a little mini story of the both of them and then work there way up of having them come together. and take from the rogue series and gambit series comics. I do however agree with anna they need to get her flying ability into gear and more draining of peoples powers and her becoming more powerful and kicking butt! and they wonder why people are not a big big fan of her in the movies, because they didn’t give her any big roles or ablities, unlike others. some like storm and so on got more screen time because there higher paying actors/actresses and asking for more money and screen time which takes from the films spending money and the movie period.

I say they need to hook Rogue and Gambit up, or at the very least have the two meet. I was ultra pissed when I realised that Gambit would be hitting 20 when Rogue was still in nappies in the movie timelines.
Ok, so they have dumbed down the technology and stuff for the movies to make them a little more realistic, but let’s face it, there’s still heaps of stuff in those movies that’s so far out there, that putting Gambit in a Weapon X cryogenic chamber for fifteen years then popping him out again saaayyy, around X2 when they brought down Alkali Lake is perfectly resonable by their standards. There you go, studio execs, a half asleep bogan from Australia just fixed your age-gap problem! It even gives Gambit an excuse to make his way to the mansion.

Is X-men: First Class supposed to take place after X3? Anyways ill most likely catch the matinee incase i dont like it. I rather have them make a X4 etc. or just reboot instead of makin spin-offs.
How to save the x-men movie storyline, after the last stand.
These are my thoughts on what the script writers should do with the killed/cured characters.
Prof X and Cyclops – Pheonix diddent kill them. Although it appears she did. They where no bodies, She actual transported them away.
The ‘cured’ – even easier. At the end on the movie we see Magneto has a small amount of power. So the cure is not pernament. It cant have been tested for long. So eventually everyone regains their powers.
In a 4th X-men, they should recast cast Storm and Cyclops (he wasent tall enough)we do not need huge named stars, it should be Storm, not Halle Berry.
Rogue needs beefing up. Super strength and flight is a must. It can happen early in the movie, her permanately absorbing those powers.
I would love Gambit in the movie, flirting with Rogue and winding Wolverine up. But Origins messed that up.

I personally have been disappointed with most of the casting for the X-Men movies. The ones that worked for me were:
Wolverine.
Professor X.
Magneto.
Nightcrawler.
Iceman.
Toad.
Mystique.
Beast.
That’s about it. I haven’t seen the Wolverine movie because everyone who saw it first told me I’d hate it.
Can I just say Anna Paquin does Rogue NO JUSTICE? none at all. Rogue and Storm were my favorite characters from both the comic and cartoon show. In the movies, however, they were BUTCHERED. They were not strong female characters, or even well spoken characters. Props to Halle Berry for trying to expand the role, and for looking hot in everything she does. But Paquin made me gag. Nothing like the strong minded and sweet-talking Rogue I grew up admiring.
I totally agree with you. I think they could have got away with most of the things they got wrong, but they totally stuffed it with Rogue. She is absolutely nothing like the real Rogue from the cartoons who is a much more interesting character and a real woman. Not a plump, confused teen.
I was thinking Anna must have had some really good connections to get that role. haha.

First Class should be about the five original X-Men. I really don’t understand all this posturing for some of the later mutant inductees.
It shouldn’t have anything to do the current mish mash of discontinuity, under developed characters and wrong character ages.
The original five X-Men: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast, Angel with Prof X resonates far better with me and paints an accurate depiction of what an X-Men (Origins / First Class) film should be all about – AUTHENTICITY! with an understanding and respect for the original source material – something I beleive neither Singer nor Ratner have come remotely close to.
i dont see why they dont just start afresh ignore the previous movies like batman did and do the story with the original 5 with the possibility of adding some later in the series or the movie so continuity is outta the way and they can have a great x men cast with great characters and gambit needs to be in them eventually with wolverine and to see cyclops gambit and wolverines arguments and spats would be awesome
I am a fan of the 90s X-men animated series as well as the comic books and I think Anna Paquin had a HORRIBLE representation of Rogue. She did not come off as the strong beautiful southern belle that Rogue is. I really really really hope they do not ask her to ruin this part again. I completely agree! The 90s series had Rogue as a self assured awesome character, but both the movies and the 200 TV series show her as a wimpier version. Also, where is the super strong accent?

Here’s the thing:
X-Men: First Class can be totally INDEPENDANT if they want more action/drama/adventure.
It’d be totally cool if they actually made any future Origins films on specific characters INDEPENDENT of what they started in the X-Men trilogy.
I don’t see why they can’t have Gambit and Rogue in the same film because let’s all face it, in the X-Men comics anything can happen. Alternate Realities, time travel etc.
They should give Rogue a more kick ass subplot. Or just do a damn X-Men Origins film on her character. With Ms. Marvel, the Brotherhood, battling with the pysches in her mind and facing off with the original X-Men…well, it can be more enjoyable than Wolverine and the X-Men trilogy. She could be on the ‘evil’ side and face the choice if she wants to join with the X-Men. Probably throw in her hero worshipping of Scott Summers in there too.
Yes, yes. Die hard Rogue fan here but can you BLAME me for pimping my favourite character? We all wanna see our awesome Marvel mutants on the big screen.
btw: anyone else think the badass Brotherhood of Mutants should get screen time as well? Like a movie totally dedicated to Magneto recruiting the original members.
