Coventry Telegraph is reporting that Angelina Jolie will be back – apparently from the dead – for Wanted 2. That’s right, in order for Wanted 2 to have a snowball’s chance in hell, somebody has cut Angelina Jolie a big enough check to return as “Fox” for another go at a half-decent movie based on a half-decent graphic novel.

All this “official news” comes our way by means of Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov, who was interviewed recently by Russian news site RIA Novosti about the upcoming sequel, and took the opportunity to drop the news about Angelina’s involvement, plus a few other gems like what locations the film will shoot in and which other characters may return for the sequel. We’ve got your links to the full interview below.

If you can read Russian then go here, if not, go here.

If you can’t tell by now, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Wanted. Somebody gave me the graphic novel for Christmas one year, thinking I’d like it… And it was all right. Saw the trailer the for movie…  It was all right. When the studio moved the film into a summer slot I thought, “Must be a good sign.”

And then I saw it.

I’m not going to rehash the experience, but let me just say: resurrecting Angelina’s character, for whatever reason, is STUPID. It’s a ploy, we all know it’s a ploy, and damn you Hollywood. Damn you.

Is the ploy going to work? Probably. I don’t want it to, I’m not going to support it, but I’ll probably be overruled by the masses. Wanted ended up making over 340 million worldwide – no telling what numbers the sequel will do. Creatively speaking, unless it’s a complete 180° from the first one I’m not interested – Jolie or no Jolie.

Wanted 2 is slated as a 2011 release.

  1. The first movie was entertaining and though only fairly acted and certainly badly executed, the effects were well done and no matter how I felt about it I couldn’t get enough over-the-top-launching-cars-into-the-air-to-crash-into-another-vehicle action and it didn’t leave me without a few redeeming qualities. A sequel seems like a bit of a bad idea, since I have this image of my head of something like the unfortunate Underworld sequels which failed to bring back any of the magic from the first one, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. As far as bringing Jolie back though, I can’t blame them for wanting to keep the most popular character in the series (and probably the best actor sans Morgan Freeman), especially since I KNOW people that only saw it to see Angelina naked. I think the movie has just enough unbelievable-WTF-AWESOME type choreography to figure out a way for Fox to survive a gunshot to the brain and I’m fairly certain I’ll watch this sequel regardless (if not just to see what else they can do with guns and cars).

  2. And with regards to those clamoring for Megan Fox, I’ll thank you to keep her out of proper cinema, please. It is one thing for them to put Angelina in a part that’s a little overly sexually exploitative (not as bad as some of her other movies), but at the very least you can’t say she didn’t do a good acting job. Jolie is a fantastic actress and Megan Fox is a TERRIBLE actress without a drop of acting talent in her tiny body, simple as that. If none of her earlier performances could convince you of that, I think you need look no more recent than Transformers 2 (an appropriately atrocious movie for an atrocious actress), in which I think Michael Bay realized just how useless Megan Fox really was. Her part in that movie is so minimal, and she does so little that I don’t think anyone could argue that she was anything more than eye-candy, but frankly that’s about the extent of her talent. I’m tired of seeing her in movies. Jolie is a seasoned actress and hasn’t lost any of her physical or emotional charm, I doubt they’ll be able to appropriately convince me of how she survived a bullet to the head, but I will, as always, look forward to her performance.

  3. Yawn at Wanted the Movie, Wanted the game, and 2 yawns for this crap sequel. AJ is over rated as far as looks goes.

  5. —Long rich and pushing 50 —let’s hope Brangelina
starts showing some real nerve by speaking out about
Hollywood and media’s suck-up relations with the most awesomely genocidal regime in history —across the Pacific!

That’s 70 million murdered —in ‘peacetime’.

    That’s right…

NOW —enjoy your circle-jerk fantasies —cause people
are dying for them —by the tens of millions.
