First Look at Angelina Jolie as ‘Maleficent’

After gestating in the development stage for a few years, Disney’s Maleficent has finally begun production. The Wicked-style re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty (from the POV of its villain) stars Angelina Jolie – who appears alongside an admirable cast of character actors and rising stars, including, Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sharlto Copley (District 9), and Miranda Richardson (Sleepy Hollow), among others.

To mark the occasion, Disney has unveiled the first image of Jolie “in character” as the eponymous sorceress. The Oscar-winning actress/bombshell’s makeup was designed by none other than the legendary Rick Baker, who’s accumulated seven (count ’em, seven) Oscars for his work on such films as An American Werewolf in London, the Men in Black series, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, among many others (check out our video interview with Baker).

Will Baker earn yet another golden statuette for his contributions to Maleficent? Take a look at the first photo of Jolie in costume, and see what you think (click on the image for a larger version):

Jolie’s Maleficent getup is pretty simple (a wraparound headpiece with horns, plus emerald-green contact lens), but she still looks good as the famous sorceress. The film is meant to humanize the characer, as it “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora” – which, in Disney’s animated version of Sleeping Beauty, amounted to her being denied an invitation to the christening of the princess. Hence, Jolie in Maleficent is less intimidating – and falls more on the attractive side, as far as appearance is concerned.

It sounds as though Linda Woolverton’s Maleficent screenplay takes a proto-feminist, revisionist approach to the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. However, unlike Woolverton’s script work on Disney’s animated Mulan movie and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, it’s less about female empowerment (or “grrl power,” if you prefer) and more about painting a traditionally simple villain in shades of gray. Since the entire film is focused on that task, Maleficent could prove more successful than the recently-released Snow White and the Huntsman did (in that respect).

Maleficent opens in theaters (2D and 3D) around the U.S. on March 14th, 2014.

  1. snow white was horrible. as long as jolie doesn’t speak in a crappy accent, and yell nonstop then she is already better then theron as the evil queen. hopefully disney can bring out a fairy tale that is actually good. mirror mirror and snow white failed on that part.

    • This is DISNEY you are talking about.

      • snap.

  2. love the way disney is doing the live action films. would love to see them do mermaid, beauty and the beast,Hercules, and some of their others.

    • Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio are both being made by del Torro.

B&B will be live-action, and star Emma Watson as Belle.
Pinocchio will be stop-motion like James & the Giant Peach and Nightmare before Christmas. (both with the style and the creepiness, apparently…)

I would mostly want a live-action Aladdin, that is somewhere in between Prince of Persia (way cheesy) and Kingdom of Heaven (pretty serious movie). And either Robin Williams comes right back as Genie, or else Russell Brand.

      • Russell Brand as Genie??? I think I might throw up.

      • Wow, I was reading this comment, and like “Wow. Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I was going to say. Who is this gu-? Oh.”

And then I realized that this was me. It’s like meeting yourself from that past. It’s great.

(I changed my name, yea. Same avatar.)

  3. It’s Angelina Jolie! Who cares about the costume, lol!

  4. So this looks like Mrs Loki.

    • lol 😛

  5. WHAT? Disney will release this but not Oz: The Great and Powerful? i don’t get it!

  6. I see that they are going to CG her cheekbones. I guess that’s easier than trying to find a woman with a skeletal face that’s NOT ugly.

  7. She looks cool, but is this movie necessary? I’m tired of evil characters having their backstories “explained”. There doesn’t have to be a reason for a character to be evil. Are we going to see a backstory on Sauron next?

    • Um, yes there does. Some people might be interested; some might be writing books on this to become famous someday e-e…

  8. Do we always have to hear the ‘female empowerment’ crap? Can’t it just be a great fun movie? (You know, like when we were kids and couldn’t give a rat’s azz about ’empowerment’. It was just the ‘good guys’ and the ‘bad guys’ and gender didn’t enter into it! Save it for your local city college reading group….) Off the soapbox now. ~ Stark

  9. I looking forward for this but I dont really think AJ should cast as the evil one. Why don’t find a new people?
What I’m dying to watch is Mermaid. Tht shall be quite awesome if it is like Pirate of caribbean: Strangers Tide. Try to find teens to be a lead cast. Kristen in the Snow white and the huntsman is a a bit unsatisfying.
