It would appear that like most good movie stars, Angelina Jolie loves a good franchise. Not content with running the Tomb Raider series into the ground at the start of this decade, Jolie is currently shooting the action thriller Salt (with franchise hopes) and waiting to see if she appears in Wanted 2.
Now comes news that Jolie is set to star as Patricia Cornwell’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta in a film that could launch another franchise for Mrs Pitt.
Fox 2000 has negotiated the rights to Dr. Kay Scarpetta in the hope that Jolie will star in the film. To date, there have been 16 Scarpetta novels – but the film wont be based on an existing title. Much like how the Bourne movies used Robert Ludlum’s titles and characters but jettisoned the plot, Fox hopes to create all new Scarpetta adventures for the big screen.
Jolie and Producers have already met with Patricia Cornwell to discuss the project, which is being pitched as a “suspense thriller in the vein of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven.”
Didn’t Jolie already make that with The Bone Collector?
The rights to the CSI-like Scarpetta novels have been kicking around Hollywood for the last fifteen years or so, but the project has never come together. With Jolie involved you can expect that the film will be fast tracked, however, no writer is yet attached.
Mark Gordon, Geyer Kosinski and Bryan Zuriff will produce the film.

“Wanted” absolutely sucked. What a stupid movie. The ONLY good part was Angelina’s nekkid bottom, but how the HECK could she be in the sequel? I thought that she was dead?? C’mon, CURVING bullets? The movie was a mess.

I live in Richmond, so if they go ahead with this idea, then it would be interesting to see if they film any of it here. As for the idea of a movie franchise based on the Scarpetta novels… I’m mixed. Some of the early books were quite good, but the series devolved into little more than a soap opera with a razor-thin murder story to justify a novel.
Angelina Jolie is too young to play Kay Scarpetta. Laura Linney would be perfect.
James Gandolfini should be Marino and Benton is a John Travolta/Nicholas Cage type with a James Brolin flair. I know these people, I’ve read every book. Jolie may be box office, but she’s not Scarpetta.
Kinda on topic, but today in Albany, NY (about 1/2 hr away from me) they’re filming a scene for “Salt”. Apparently the Albany highways had just the right configuration for a stunt needed. Of course I am now going to have to see this movie. Wish that it happened YESTERDAY on my day off so I could drive down and check it out!!
No sign of Angelina at the shooting though, just a stunt double thus far…
Ive read Patricia Cornwells’ novels and they’re great. The fact its going to be made into a movie is awesome im just not sure if Angelina Jolie will do justice to Dr. Kays’ character..the way she looks is different from the character..Someone like, Michelle Pfeiffer? Jodie Foster? perhaps? im excited to see who will play Marino, Benton and my fave Lucy.
I have been avid long time reader of Patricia Cornwell’s successful franchise of Kay Scarpetta novels. If Angelina Jolie plays the part of Kay, it will completely ruin it for me. I do not prefer Angelina she is too abrasive for this role. It needs someone who will uphold the integrity of the story. Angelina does not by any means fit the profile of the character.

I agree with you 100%, Jolie is just not Kay material. She is way to young, Kay is like in her late 40′s and James Gandolfini would be a perfect match for Marino!!
I love the Scarpetta series – all of them – I am glad that there is talk of a movie franchise, but I am not sold with Angelina as Scarpetta – I do not think she is right for the role – could she pull it off acting wise, probably, but she doesn’t fit the description or the picture of Kay that her avid fans have in their minds – it would ruin it for me as for others as well – read previous comments.
Oh why do they even bother throwing money at Patricia Cornwell? I can’t see the series fans going for this casting, tho I think that Jolie has the chops for it.

I cannot believe Cornwell is selling out to Hollywood to this rediculous choice in casting of the characters in her book. Cornwell is the woman that her fans picture Scarpetta to look like!!!!! The whole concept of Scarpetta and the the novels that she plays a role in will in fact be RUINED if Jolie is cast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes me sick that Jolie is going to portray Scarpetta!!!!!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH MS CORNWELL??? Is she that disconnected with her fans that she is selling out like this????????
The part of Kay should never be portrayed by Angelina! I’m reading The Scarpetta Factor now, and picturing her is ridiculous! She should be older, softer, not at all skinny. I agree – James Gandolfini would be good as Marino, but so would Dennis Franz, who played Sipowitz on NYPD Blue. That’s who I’ve always pictured in the role.
Pleaaassseeee NO! Angelina Jolie is not Kay Scarpetta by any stretch of the imagination, use of make up, or change in hair colour. She just does not work as Kay Scarpetta. i dont remember the exact words, but it goes something along the lines that Kay is a fine featured blonde. Angelina is beautiful but NOT fine featured, her nose is big blob! Ashley Judd is a good example of a fine featured face! Or Sharone Stone… When reading the books I can only visualise Patricia Cornwell as Kay Scarpetta!

Yes, Jodie Foster would be fantastic as Scarpetta, I thought she fit the role well in The Silence of the Lambs as Clarice Starling. I’m not too fond of Angelina Jolie, she should stick to the slutpuppy roles and leave intellectual roles to those who can pull it off and actually LOOK like they have a brain.
Angelina Jolie is dark and skinny, and way too young to be playing Scarpetta. Scarpetta is BLONDE AND FAIR-SKINNED, A descendant from Verona, Italy. Way off the mark for Jolie to be playing Scarpetta! As for Travolta playing Benton Wesley, NO! Marino, maybe, Travolta has the “street” look to carry off that particular role. I’m seeing Nicholas Cage for the role of Benton Wesley, he has the sensitive look that could work there. Jolie would do well(maybe) for the role of Lucy Farinelli, she has that “rogue” look that would work there.
That’s a shame. So many people seem to think that Angelina Jolie is great. I simply can’t get past her real life character defects…that of homewrecker and dubious mental stability.
Beyond all that though, she is NOT Dr. Kay Scarpetta. The age, coloring, demeanor, everything is wrong.
Cornwell’s Scarpetta series is wonderful and deserves to be done justice. How sad that a more appropriate actress won’t be considered for this role in deference to Hollywood’s insistence on showcasing boobs…and I mean that in every sense of the word.
I have read all of the Scarpetta novels and agree that Angelina Jolie is not right for the part of Kay. Jodie Foster would be much better. The Kay character is intelligent and strong-willed and I agree that Angelina is too young. She’s not appropriate for the Lucy character either. But then I am not a fan at all of Angelina. Sienna Miller would be a good fit for the role of Lucy, I think. Pierce Brosnan as Benton.
