Here’s an unexpected twist in the casting process for Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy’s The Counselor: Cameron Diaz is reported to have snagged a role which was previously being circled by Angelina Jolie.
The Counselor cast already includes people like Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt – making Diaz the odd (wo)man out, as far as the talent assembled for this prestige project goes. However, if there were ever a golden opportunity for the comedic actress to demonstrate her dramatic acting chops (we’ll say Gangs of New York and Vanilla Sky didn’t count), it would be a meaty role in a film written by one of the greatest living American authors.
The story follows an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who is in search of a big payday after he proposes to his girlfriend, Laura. So he hooks up with Reiner (Bardem), an acquaintance with deep criminal ties, for a new business proposition: they’ll take $20 million worth of cocaine from south of the border and offload it themselves, aided by the no-good Westray (Pitt). As you might imagine, things do not go well for anyone involved.
Twitch is asserting that Diaz has secured the role of Malkina, who is described by The Playlist as “a hyper-sexualized Argentinean woman who’s hooked up with Reiner, and it’s [a] pretty meaty part all around.” Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz was previously said to be a front-runner for the part of Laura, but there’s no mention in Twitch‘s scoop as to whether or not she’s still a contender.
Obviously, some script tweaking will be necessary if Diaz does indeed tackle the role of Malkina; not to mention, what little has been revealed about The Counselor so far suggests Diaz would be a better fit for the part of Laura – whereas Cruz seems like the more obvious choice for Malkina. Then again, perhaps Scott’s intention to go against the grain and not typecast either actress would explain this surprise development.
Expect more updates on the casting process for The Counselor in the near future, as the film gears up to begin production this summer.
