It’s Official: Andrew Garfield is the New Spider-Man

Published 5 years ago by , Updated August 11th, 2013 at 4:04 am,

It used to be that studios spent vast amounts of resources and publicity getting the news out about the latest actors cast in upcoming films. There were press conferences, phone calls – and later emails were introduced. Now, whether it’s due to laziness, convenience or perhaps both, cast announcements are now being made via Twitter.

Such is the case with the newest addition to the Marvel movie pantheon. Sony Pictures’ twitter account just tweeted to the world:

Yup, there’s nothing like saying it in less than 140 characters.

Ever since Spider-Man 4 was delayed to the point that Sony decided to kick everyone off the project and go with the reboot option last year, speculation has been swirling around who would play Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Taylor Lautner, Jim Sturgess, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Logan Lerman, Jamie Bell, and most recently Josh Hutcherson were all in the mix at one point to play the high school nerd turned superhero.

In an unscientific Screen Rant reader poll with over 500 votes, Andrew Garfield just edged out Alden Ehrenreich for 2nd to last place as the person people would most like want to see as Spider-Man, so of course that is the person Marc Webb and Sony Pictures choose – the front runner.

Garfield was pretty good in the mostly overlooked film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and we’ll see what he is made of in the upcoming David Fincher film The Social Network where he plays Eduardo Saverin.  Director Marc Webb seems to be enthusiastic about the casting saying:

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity.”

Of course, Webb isn’t likely to say “we just made a really bad choice and I need a drink now” when commenting on casting decisions. I kid, of course. Garfield looks young and is quite charming – here’s a video of him shot a year ago, after he received a BAFTA award:

It was previously stated that the new Spider-Man reboot was to go back to high school and would be darker and more brooding – you know, like Twilight but with webs. That means Parker will only be about 17 or 18 max for the first film – but Garfield is almost 28… well above high school age. Of course, using older people to play younger teen roles is nothing new. Just look at the cast of 21 Jump Street or Ralph Macchio, who was 23 when he played the 18 year old Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid.

The Spider-Man reboot is being directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and will be written by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent (Spider-Man 2) and will have Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad serving as producers.

I made this prediction before but I’m making it again – Garfield will only have to play Peter Parker because Sony will go all “Na’vi” with Spider-Man, making him completely mocap CGI. With the film slated to be shot in the same style 3D as James Cameron’s Avatar, I don’t think my prediction is too out there.

What are your thoughts on Andrew Garfield being cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the reboot?

  1. Epic fail. Studio heads should be fired. I won’t be seeing this film nor buying or renting it in my lifetime. I’ll wait for the next reboot.

    • hitgirl, it will be rebooted a year after its released, watch…….

    • Just wait & see fer chrissakes.

This guy’s a WAY more talented actor than anyone
else who was up for the role.

The big question is , who will replace MJ and
who will play WHAT Villain (s).

      Kraven & Lizard, anyone?

  2. i don’t get why hollywood always goes with old people for their high school age movies. why can’t they just pick someone who would actually be in high school!!!

    • It’s because of certian laws. they have to “pay extra” if you will go by for younger kids (anyone thats 5-17 in a movie). So pick people in there early 20′s or 18 and up to play younger. mostly because they look the part, and chances are act it out. But Andy Dear…He has a huge risk in The UK then he does here in the U.S. so he’s not an unknown. he’s more known then toby McGuire was. I have doubts, but it does seem they are going into the Twilight Batman Begins reboot stage…and they want to keep the rights of Spidey…XD

      Horrible PEOPLE!

  3. I had a terrible thought. Then I had another. What If…?

What If we find out that the new Spidey will have at least two films shot back-to-back? This might take care of Garfield’s age. After all, for the first film he could pass off as a teen. But after that? Maybe not so much. Also, I recall that one rumor ages ago when Raimi was developing 4 (or 3) and there was talk about back to back films?

What If… Paul is only half right? Yeah, Spidey will be all CG (I don’t personally feel that way) but Peter Parker gets botoxed like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in the third X-Men film?

Not that anyone would go there, y’know.

As for the casting choice, I’m okay with it. What amazes me is that some folks want this to fail (probably because Anton Yelchin or Logan Lerman didn’t get the main gig) and yet if the new film does, what message does that send?

I still think the HS nit will be glanced over at best, and this “reboot” does an about face and pretty much follows Spider-Man 3 with some more recasting. Esp. if Lizard is the main foe.

    • Cause they wasted a perfectly good villain and departure point in the trilogy resulting in a bad sequel. That’s why.

  4. Ummm can we re-reboot and cast Topher Grace in his rightful role as Spider-man. Why is that to much to ask? They went and got a British Topher-knockoff… why not just give it to him? Restart him in Junior year, hit some recap to freshman year and up, second movie Senior year and out. Topher could pull that off and we wont have to put up with a fake American(new york) accent. Bingo…. We have a winner!
    I hate studios….

    Icon Out

    • Because this guys a FAR superior actor to Topher disGrace!

I saw him at an appearance & screening for Lions for Lambs.
      Very charismatic, affecting individual.

Both Spidey AND Parker are in good hands.

This guy single handedly raises the bar for this entire production.
Webb is one lucky dude that Garfield even auditioned for this.
Let’s hope the script gives him somethin’ to work with.

All naysayers can kindly bow. You know you’ll be first in line.

      • dude this naysayer WONT be inline. not even the slightest interested in the bed reboot. dont think you know people when it comes to their tastes my friend.

  5. He’s an all right choice. Not particularly good or bad. I wanted Logan Lerman or Aaron Johnson to get it, but never mind. It’s only Sony.

  6. He was my third choice over Johnson and Lerman, but I’m already seeing this happen and I like it.

Seeing Spider-Man done as both the normal and Ultimate version is a good idea. It brings more things into the realistic realm while keeping up with their origin, and making Spider-Man more flawed and vulnerable to villains and personal attacks. Plus I like the modern spin on Spider-Man. It’s a great amalgamation of the old and modern stuff.

For back-up characters I think these guys can replace the original cast: Alexandra Daddario or Carey Mulliagan as MJ, Jake Abel as Venom in his own movie featuring Spider-Man, Alice Eve as Black Cat, Dominic Cooper as either the Lizard or Electro, Ralph Fiennes as Norman Osborne (The in a CGI outfit as Green Goblin), Clive Owen as Doctor Octopus, Christopher Meloni as Sandman, and Anton Yelchin as Harry Osborne.

    That’s my dream cast.

    • Agreed. I simply cannot see anyone else in that role.

He stole the show every time he was on screen!

Do the right thing – and make it a “partial” reboot,
      keeping him.

      And that’s IT.

  7. whats weird is he looks like the peter parker from the comics jus his eye brows are waay to bushy

    • It’s true. It’s like he climbed right off the page, almost…

  8. This movie is already being constructed out of Fail

  9. After seeing his performance in Kick-A$$ and knowing Sony was rebooting Spiderman the whole time I thought Aaron Johnson would be perfect for Spiderman… He was my top choice and I’m a little dissapointed… I hope Garfield can prove us wrong though

    • I think that’s what they’re going for, Rogue. He was a Ninth Grader in the Ultimates books, and that’s what angle they’re shooting at.

    • You should see him act.

I think we’re in for a much more believable, intriguing
and compelling Peter Parker than we could’ve ever expected.

Plus – every else on the list save Yelchin & Johnson are just so
below the bar acting SKILLS wise that there is simply no debate.

Of course they could still mess this up. I’m not going to blame
this actor though. He’s pretty friggin’ awesome, based on
      all he’s done so far.

      • see him act? no thanks, hell man, thy should just went with hayed christ-however you spell his last name, let HIM kill off the franchise just like he did with star wars

  10. Wrong django Im a naysayer and I can promise you I won’t be in line at all. Topher is to old for the part however he’s more talented and more fitting for the role. I will not watch this film in theaters because he is wrong for the part. I might check it out on DVD if they don’t stick with the high school thing because he’s far to old and not in is wildest dreams could he pull off a 17 year old.

    • Let the games begin.

Sooo you’re basing your opinion of Topher Grace’s
acting ABILITY (not how much you think he looks like
      Peter Parker) onnnnn…

That ’70′s Show and his run as Venom? The upcoming
      Predators movie?

Let’s just settle it this way. He could not be cast, as he
      already played Venom.

And Garfield’s better. You’ll beee … 5th in line, then.

And I won’t hold anything against you.
      You’re just wrong, is all.

      • LOL daniel, im right up there with yo on this one…epic EPIC fail in the making here

      • @”Let’s just settle it this way. He could not be cast, as he
        already played Venom”

That’s irrelevant. This is a reboot and has nothing at all to do with Spider-man 3. He could have played the role.

        @”You’re just wrong, is all.”

Sorry, that’s his opinion, and an opinion can’t be proven wrong.

    • XXXO finally someone other than myself who owns and wears super hero costumes i could kiss you!! lol Can we see you in your spidey out fit..:)

      • I have a Deadpool and Iron Man outfit:)

  11. lol i stll dont know why the heck they changed the cast in the first place. i wanted to see what wud happn its dumb they just ended the series :`(. lol tayler lautner was a choice! hahah FAIL! XD

  12. Django are you mentally slow? I’m not going to watch it why is that so hard to believe. Just because you so desperatly want me to doesn’t mean I will. I won’t be first or fith or even last in line I have no intrest in seeing twilight man by Sony with a spider man casting choice that’s worse than Chris evans as captain America .

    • this guy seems to think he has power over people

  13. For what it’s worth I’ll give him a chance.

I think the rationale for using older actors to play teens is that they don’t age as fast. We’ve seen what happens when you use teens to play teens with Harry Potter and Narnia. They grow up so quickly.

    • i have no rationale for studios using brittsh actors for amerecian iconic roles, fail fail fail

  14. He was great in Boy A and in Lions for Lambs, i dunno if Spidey is right for him but i like him as an actor. Ill give him a chance though

  15. I have a batman outfit it’s crappy though except the cowl I bought it seperately because it was amazing quality. It’s an exact replica from Batman Begins it looks great I wire it for Halloween.

  16. Didn’t seeBoy A but Lions for Lambs was awful one of the worst films it’s year and he certainly wasn’t very good in it.

  17. Nooooooooooo!!!!! Why don’t they (the studios) ever listen to wat and who we want?!? This is a terrible choice…..I don’t like how he acts:it’s official spiderman the reboot will flop!!!

  18. If they wanted someone who looked dorkier than the last kid they succeeded. I still don’t see why something that made so much money needs a reboot – even the much put upon Spiderman 3 grossed over 800 million!

  19. Topher Grace would’ve been a great choice if this movie was based on the original “Amazing Spiderman” comic book series which depicts Peter Parker & Spiderman in mature adult life and responsibilities.

Just because he played Eddie Brock doesn’t mean anything. Chris Evans is playing Captain America.

Who better to play a New Yorker than a New Yorker I say and besides he’s going out with hottie Teresa Palmer from my hometown. :-) She could easily pass for Gwen Stacey.

I’m curious as to how Sony will handle Spider-TEEN for the Twilight/Glee/High School Musical/MTV crowd. I’m sure it’ll be a superficial and trendy fast paced flash in the pan.

  20. I’d rather have Garfield the cat play the spidey role!

  21. I don’t think this will be successful I mean how can it?!? I think spidey 3 will be better than this reboot…..

  22. why??? after 3 movies a new peter parker .

  23. Ok i just saw him in the imaginarium of doctor parnassus.. i thought he was really good in it, but i mean, im not sure hes gonna be very good as peter parker, when i first saw his picture and interview i laughed out loud. but i guess i judged too early. i mean theres a chance he can do this well cause hes a good actor, lets just hope it wont fail bigtime :)

    • but it will fail, not only fail but EPIC fail
