Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man reset the Spider-Man movie continuity and laid the foundation for larger developments in the future, but it’s the second installment that will begin the process of constructing a superhero cinematic universe to rival Marvel Studios’ film-verse.

The official Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer offers a sneak peek at those blueprints, with a handful of intriguing Easter Eggs - teasing developments that will occur in future movies - sprinkled amidst the glimpses at significant plot beats that are going to take place in the second installment. Similarly, a couple of important TASM2 cast members have already begun talking to the press about their return in the third chapter, due to the fact that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just an introduction to their comic book movie counterparts.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 leads Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Jamie Foxx (Max Dillon/Electro) and director Marc Webb – helmer on the first installment – recently conducted an interview with Yahoo! Movies, where they spoke about the sequel and the rebooted Spider-Man franchise in general.

You can watch that video below:

There’s a lot of intriguing material to take in here, but by far the juiciest comments were served up by Garfield, in response to questions about The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which already has a 2018 release date):

“I mean I’m under contract for another one after ['The Amazing Spider-Man 2'] … as far as a forth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.”

Garfield’s response here isn’t completely out of left-field, given that it was Webb who previously indicated that the fourth installment in the Amazing Spider-Man continuity might not be your traditional Spider-Man movie. Very much so, a movie that (potentially) doesn’t include Peter Parker himself (or some other comic book character known for donning the Spider duds) would not be considered a conventional Spider-Man film.

Here is an exact quote from the director, on that subject:

“I think [for] the fourth movie, what we’ve discovered is there are so many ancillary characters, that have enormous, cinematic potential that there may be other ways to exploit those characters, in a way that is exciting and fun and worthwhile. It might not just be a ‘Spider-Man’ movie.”

Sinister Six Amazing Spider Man 2 570x294 Andrew Garfield Might Not Be in Amazing Spider Man 4

Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks to be building towards a showdown between Spidey and the Sinister Six – a half-dozen of the web-slinger’s most dangerous super-powered opponents – faster than anticipated. Current rumors point to the possibility that the sequel may establish and/or introduce every member of the super villain squad before it draws to a close (that includes, during the customary mid-credits scene). In other words, Amazing Spider-Man 3 may well end up bringing Garfield’s rendition of Peter Parker’s character arc to a proper concluding point, when all is said and done.

Thereafter? Well, Sony Co-Chairman Amy Pascal has already hinted at potential Spider-Man spinoffs in the future (revolving around the other Marvel characters that her studio owns), while Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci – who are returning to co-write and produce the third installment – have gone on record as having expressed their interest in tackling the character of Venom (who, rumor has it, will be teased in the second movie). So, a Venom spinoff is a definite option.

Would you be interested in a spinoff featuring Venom, the Sinister Six or some other character from the Spider-Man universe? Are you hoping that Garfield as Peter Parker will appear in some (if not all) of any future Amazing Spider-Man spinoffs that end up getting produced, even though he won’t be the focus?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in U.S. theaters on May 2nd, 2014, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on June 10th, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (official titled TBD) on May 4th, 2018.

  1. Will Spidey get recast after part 3? I thought Andrew Garfield will play Spiderman till 2018.

  2. I’d be extremely bummed if Garfield doesn’t return for a fourth installment and the film instead revolves around someone else. Do I think it will happen? Nah, I think he’s going to be apart of it, despite his reaction.

  3. They could have Ben Reilly take over for Amazing Spider-Man 4 or something, who knows. I just want my Spider-Man 2099 movie.

  4. Man, I was really hoping we could get a franchise started with Spider-man’s story continuing past a third movie. Like the Bond series, not getting bogged down by the idea that “oh, it HAS to be a trilogy!” Just keep the Spidey movies coming. Do spin-offs if you like but don’t push Spidey out.

Who knows, maybe they’re indicating he will be involved but it will be a Spider-man/Black Cat team-up?

  5. The question is, aside from Venom and the Sinister 6, what other characters does Sony have the rights to that an entire film can be made around?

    • Garfield does not really impress me as Spidey, kind of “meh”. Seems to young and geeky. However, I imagine if no big issues come up, he will continue as Spidey after his third outing. As for Sinister Six, I would not mind seeing them, but Spidey MUST have help. He cannot defeat six of them all at once himself. Black Cat, perhaps, but needs someone more powerful. Maybe the studio could negotiate for rights to someone else, like say, Moon Knight? Not such a big character that Marvel would refuse to give him away or loan him out, but for the right amount of money, possibly a deal could be struck where both studios could use him (ala Quicksilver, in a slightly different twist?). I would not mind seeing Scorpion and Mysterio. Kraven, Vulture, Rhino do not impress me, and Hobgoblin is too much like Green Goblin. Green Goblin has already been done, don’t wear him out. Doc Ock likewise has already been done, although I am a bit curious I must admit to see what this newer franchise would make him look like and be like. I thought the Lizard was a good choice for a villain, but would have preferred a slightly different interpretation of him (am I being hard to please??). I loved the first two Tobey Macguire Spideys, and liked the villain Sandman (Venom and Carnage hold little interest for me). I guess time will tell, and I will continue to buy all the marvel character DVDs (irregardless of which heroes and studios they come from). Gotta keep the collection burgeoning and bulging!

    • I am not certain Venom could carry his own movie, and I would not want him to try. Just a Spidey knock-off with ‘roid-rage.

  6. Not traditional? Hmmm i got a crazy theory what if its told from the villains perspective and with Spiderman as there antagonist forming the sinister six then amazing Spiderman 5 and 6 is a crazy two part epic showdown just like all the other movies that have done it similar in the past

  7. SCARLET SPIDER!

  8. The Sinister Six in the third movie comes way to soon, not enough buildup.
And after the 2nd movie we probably wont even have 6 characters yet, introducing another 2 characters in the 3rd movie and then have them all fight Spidey as well will take a 4 hour movie if done properly.

They really should take more time to introduce characters imo.

    • What if they do a part 1 and part 2 to the sinister six movie because i agree they need more time to make it good

  9. Well, TASM sucks anyway.

  10. Here’s a crazy from far left field idea. Spidey faces off against the Sinister Six in Spiderman 3, ends up dying and is replaced by Miles Morales. Would it piss everyone off? Absolutely. Then again it would be quite the twist.

    • Would it p*** me off? Ever seen a lawn-sprinkler?! No killing Spidey, Spidey is always and only Peter Parker in my book.

  11. I find it wrong to expect an actor to play the same character past 3 movies. Not everyone is Hugh jackman, and even he seems like he is about ready to give up. 6-7 years as one character is a long time for a young actor who probably wants to branch out. If Garfield can give us 3 good spiderman movies he has given us everything we deserve. After 3, then start getting creative or wait a long time and reboot. The thing with Spiderman and Marvel heroes in general is their rogue gallery doesnt necessarily warrent more than 3 films. Spidey probably could do more tho his villains just get more rediculous, but as far as Ironman or captain america things become a little more iffy. Not everyone can have a Batman Rogue gallery, so it comes the time when you have to dig down deep and get creative, even if that means creating a new villian.

  12. Good. We need new Batman.

    • Superman.
I meant to say that we need new Superman.

      • Crap. Just… never mind.

        • Its okay, Thor, we know what you meant.

  13. I would hope he at least has some involvement in the fourth film maybe centered on Venom, Black Cat, and/or Spider Woman. Maybe he is just saying he has no contract for the fourth film yet. Looking forward to see what they have in store for us.

  14. Scarlet spider is a clone so they would need a look a like of garfield

hopefully its not the death of spiderman and miles morales takes over ( I highly doubt it)

He is probably not signed up yet but if he doesnt do it they can recast him without rebooting. …I mean batman was recasted 3 times back in the day

  15. My best guess is that TASM 4 will be centered on Venom or Spider Woman

    • I speculate Spider-Woman falls in that awkward Avengers category Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver fall into.

      • I speculate Spider-Woman could fall right into my arms! And bring Scarlet Witch with her! And Wasp! And Dazzler! And…….!!!!!

  16. Hoping this one sets up a Rhino/Lizard/DocOct/Electro/Vulture/Goblin sinister six, and teases Venom at the end, and ends with a pseudo cliffhanger.

Have the third one be a outmatched Spiderman turning to the alien costume or Brock/Flash Thompson wearing the suit to help him. At the end, introduce Carnage and perhaps kill Spiderman?

Fourth movie is Venom vs Carnage. Possibly introduce a Ben Riley clone of some sort towards the end to bring back Andrew for the 5th movie.

  17. Bring da Symbiote! m*tha f*ckaas!!

  18. I want a Eddie Brock centered Venom movie, in which Spiderman/Garfield appear in the movie in some form, it would be interesting to see Spiderman portrayed partially as the antagonist, before they eventually team up and work together against Carnage? yes that is what I want!

    • Venom has already been named as a movie. Why would it be The Amazing Spiderman 4: Venom, with no Spiderman?

      I would suspect:
2014- TASM 2 Goblin and the Sinister Six
2016- TASM 3 Rhino & whoever else they come up with, addressing Venom-Spidey better than SM3 leaving it open-ended
2017- Venom with minimal Spiderman to conclude TASM 3, then The Eddie Brock story
2018- (“non-traditional”) TASM 4 Spiderman and Venom vs Carnage with or without Garfield

  19. Spectacular spiderman anyone…. in the animated show spiderman ciuldnt beat the six, but the. Aquired the venom suit and mopped the floor with them. This led to him eventually dropping tjw suit and eddy brock picking it up. I think sinister six assembled by ending, peter finds venom suit in oscorp while meeting brock. Next movie mop floor with six while struggling with suit. Drops suit at end of 3, brock picks it up abd 4 is venom as villian.

    • I was thinking that too Markus. Spectacular Spider-Man was a great series.

  20. It’s gonna be a big screen adaptation of Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark.

  21. I hear a bunch of language dancing around not having a set plan or a fully finalized plan. Or having a plan they don’t yet want to reveal. I don’t hear Garfield refusing to be Spiderman a fourth time and non-”traditional” Spiderman could mean a lot of things. Miles Morales isn’t traditional. Superior Spiderman is far from traditional (but SSM bothers me enough as a comic). Carnage or someone else being introduced is non-traditional because a live action SM hasn’t used him yet nor has one really featured Spiderman working with anyone else. Maybe, maybe (all unlikeliness aside) we’re being taunted a multi-studio collaboration (and not necessarily THE big one we desire).

  22. Here’s a thought…In TASM 2 it seems that Spider-man will be facing Rhino, Electro, and Green Goblin (Harry) as we all know. What if in this movie Harry is shown to be a villain but in the end his father is cured and becomes the true Goblin. What if his father betrays Harry and it leads up to Harry and Peter teaming up to take on the Sinister Six in the next movie.

I understand that it says Harry will be suiting up as the Goblin but honestly in the trailer the Goblin looks more like Chris Cooper than Dane Dehaan. Just from the back view that we get.

    • I think the Green Goblin will be Norman, but it will be made to seem like it is Harry. I think the Venom suit will help Spidey defeat the Six in TASM3, but I’m not sure if Spidey will be wearing it or it will be worn by someone else, either Harry or Flash.

  23. I personally really hope that Garfield comes back for amazing Spider-Man 4 but after hearing what the people making the new movies have to say and after hearing the reading this intriguing article I guess it all depends on what kind if story they are trying to tell. It sounds like in this article that this amazing Spider-Man 4 could focus heavily on a new spinoff character like venom or the sinister six or something whether I would be interested in seeing any of these movies I guess I would say yes but I wouldn’t call it amazing spider man 4 or a Spider-Man movie. So all in all I really hope Garfield comes back for the rest of the spidey movies i love the character and I love him as the character but it all really depends on what they (the studio) wants to do I mean things have been expanding lately (plenty of which is because of the avengers) and Webb and Sony really is expanding spidey’s universe so I’m interested to see what this really means

  24. do not recast Garfield. In my eyes, he is the definitive peter parker. Tobey Maguire was great, but Garfield’s a superior spider-man in my eyes. Re-casting him would be a mistake. Just the same as recasting RDJ or Hugh Jackman would be a mistake.

    • superior spider-man in my eyes, you need to get your eyes checked. TASM was barely watchable.

      • Garfield wasn’t the problem with TASM. Anyone can play Spiderman, but his Peter wasn’t a huge issue either. The re-telling of the origin was fairly redundant and drawn out while the cast of villains was underwhelming.

Wolverine can be quasi-recast introducing X-23. Or people can get over it and stop acting like they won’t watch it.

  25. Translation : 20 million dollars payday please

    Wait !!!
Will smith made Sony a lot of money through the bad boys and MIB franchise !!!
The least they can do is cast jaden smith in the next Spider-Man reboot

    • Casting Jaden Smith as Spider-Man would be like casting Tommy Wiseau as Abraham Lincoln.

  26. I want Garfield to play spidey for a really long time, similar to what hugh jackman is with wolverine. Garfield loves the character as well and I think he’s doing a much better job than tobey mcguire. Legacy.

    • me too I think it would be cool to see Peter Parker / Spider-Man age and mature on screen

  27. Gotta love all the whiners who don’t want their precious Andrew Garfield to leave.

If what he says is true, (why wouldn’t it be?) then all you “pro-Andrew, anti-Toby” fanatics have to suck it up and live with it.

  28. I have a nagging feeling we may be seeing a Miles Morales Spider-Man.

  29. Does anyone know if Marvel Studios has exclusive rights to The Kingpin? I hope Sony can use him like Fox with Quicksilver?
