Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix in First ‘All Is By My Side’ Set Photos

Despite having some legal hurdles to jump, the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side is currently in production, as was foretold a few weeks back. Hip-hop star Andre “3000″ Benjamin is starring as Hendrix, in a story that will explore the musician’s early days leading up to his discovery and explosion into a musical icon. Due to impending issues with the Hendrix estate, director John Ridley (Three Kings) won’t be able to use any official Hendrix tracks – but that’s another discussion.

Today we have the first set photos from All Is By My Side, which feature Andre 3000 in character as Hendrix, as well as Captain America star Hayley Atwell as Linda Keith, the woman who discovered Jimi. Scroll down for the photos.

While some “music purists” might disagree, in this writer’s opinion it’s never been a big concern having Andre 3000 (a.k.a. Andre Benjamin) play Hendrix. He’s a musician. He’s shown some competent acting skills (see: Four Brothers, Idlewild). He looks enough like Hendrix. He has repeatedly expressed his love and respect the subject he will be portraying. As far as biopics go, you could do a lot worse.

Though the notion of not having official Hendrix tracks in the movie seems distasteful at first, it’s hardly a death knell. A 2000 made-for-TV Hendrix biopic (starring The Wire‘s Wood Harris) got by using cover tracks from other artists. Given that All Is By My Side is focusing primarily on the days BEFORE Hendrix’s most famous songs hit the airwaves, there is a lot of room for improvisation when it comes to getting the soundtrack right.

We’ll keep you updated as production on All Is By My Side continues.

  1. While I like the idea of Hendrix biopic, and I think Andre 3000 is great for the part I just don’t see how you have a movie about Jimi Hendrix with no songs by Jimi Hendrix, although most of the people that call themselves Hendrix fans couldn’t name two song by him anyway.

    • I can valleys of neptune, highway chile……some of his less famous songs

  2. “won’t be able to use any official Hendrix tracks ”

What is this, an episode of 30 Rock?

  3. I neither hate nor love the idea of andre 3000 as jimi hendrix…I might have prefered lenny kravitz to play Jimi but Andre has proven himself to be a decent actor. Can he carry this movie or not? that remains to be seen. But I hate the fact Jimi’s estate is so selfish that they wont allow his popular songs in the movies.

Biopic movies about musicians without music content tend to crash faster then a blimp on fire…they just dont carry the weight. It will make the difference between an oscar winning movie like Ray and a lackluster movie like Nowhere Boy (about a young John Lennon)

  4. no tracks by Hendrix in the movie = me not seeing said movie

  5. Andre Benjamin already shared a resemblance to Hendrix, but dressed up like him, he looks almost exactly like him. I don’t mind that this film doesn’t have the music rights. The Hendrix estate is a pain to deal with and they’d have the filmmaker and crew jump through all sorts of hoops… and the result would be a watered-down biopic.

I’m looking forward to the movie.

  6. Let’s not forget that not every song Hendrix recorded was his original work. One of his most famous songs, All Along The Watch Tower, was a BobDylan tune. Also, given the amount of blues he played in his latter career, I’m sure there will be some material that is Hendrix related.

  7. How they hell can you docs movie about a musician and not include many of the music he made. Whats the deal ?

  8. I will watch this, unlike the 70% who probably won’t just because it doesn’t have Hendrix tunes in it. Think about it though, if it’s focused on his early days, which consisted of Hendrix slogging the Chitlin’ circuit with R&B club bands paying his dues, the music would be different to start with. I see potential here. The Hendrix estate doesn’t own the classic blues songs.

As a side-note I found “Nowhere Boy” stilted and lifeless. Not interesting.

  9. Wasn’t there already a biopics that starred Wood Harris? It already included a lot of Hendrix material.

  10. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Andre 3000 twice in person and have spoken with him for a bit(I live in Atlanta). He’s a great humble guy, a good actor, one of the only TRUE Hip Hop “Artists” that actually plays musical instruments(mainly guitar), and truly respects Jimi Hendrix’s legacy. Many of the so-called “artists” within the Hip Hop world(including many that I have met)know little to nothing outside of their own genre let alone truly studying their own craft. Most refuse to study poetry, music theory, or learn how to play an instrument(Not virtual instruments). I think Andre truly loves and appreciates the culture of music in general and will play out this role with heart, respect and the best of his ability.

  11. I love Jimi Hendrix. Own all his albums. Consider him the greatest guitarist. Don’t want him demythologized. Good luck on the movie.
