Fans of the 2004 Will Ferrell comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy can come out from their glass cases of emotion now – the followup, Anchorman 2 is not dead after all.

Director Adam McKay had to cancel his plans for filming an Anchorman sequel in 2011 after Paramount passed on the project last April.  The news that Anchorman 2 would not happen incited a major outcry from fans of the original improv comedy hit.

Was the negative reaction large enough to give Paramount reason to reconsider?  Very much so, according to McKay himself:

“It did, it made a difference.  Paramount heard it.  Adam Goodman, the President of Paramount, was on the first one so he loves it and when that outcry came, he was kind of excited because he know it could maybe push [Anchorman 2] towards happening.”

McKay has an adaptation of The Boys on his plate to handle before he sets to work on an Anchorman sequel, which he says will not happen for at least another two years.  If Anchorman 2 is given the green light by Paramount, production could begin soon after McKay finishes his comic book movie.

Anchorman cast members Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and David Koechner have all expressed interest in reuniting for a sequel – one that would be “bigger, crazier” than the original and set in the 1980s.  All of these comedic performers fetch a bigger paycheck than they did back in 2004, but have also agreed to take a pay cut in order for Anchorman 2 to move forward.

While Ferrell was the leading man of Anchorman, the film was very much an ensemble pic that gave its supporting players a fair amount of time onscreen to show off their comedic chops.  The big question is not whether now-established stars like Carell or Rudd would be given more screen time in Anchorman 2 – neither actor is known for demanding preferential treatment as is – but if the cast can recapture the inspired sense of randomness that made their first outing together such a memorable time.

If the fans have their way, Burgundy’s news team will get their chance to try in Anchorman 2.
