‘Anchorman 2′ Could Still Happen

Anchorman 2 may still happen Anchorman 2 Could Still Happen

Fans of the 2004 Will Ferrell comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy can come out from their glass cases of emotion now – the followup, Anchorman 2 is not dead after all.

Director Adam McKay had to cancel his plans for filming an Anchorman sequel in 2011 after Paramount passed on the project last April.  The news that Anchorman 2 would not happen incited a major outcry from fans of the original improv comedy hit.

Was the negative reaction large enough to give Paramount reason to reconsider?  Very much so, according to McKay himself:

“It did, it made a difference.  Paramount heard it.  Adam Goodman, the President of Paramount, was on the first one so he loves it and when that outcry came, he was kind of excited because he know it could maybe push [Anchorman 2] towards happening.”

McKay has an adaptation of The Boys on his plate to handle before he sets to work on an Anchorman sequel, which he says will not happen for at least another two years.  If Anchorman 2 is given the green light by Paramount, production could begin soon after McKay finishes his comic book movie.

Anchorman Anchorman 2 Could Still Happen

Anchorman cast members Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and David Koechner have all expressed interest in reuniting for a sequel – one that would be “bigger, crazier” than the original and set in the 1980s.  All of these comedic performers fetch a bigger paycheck than they did back in 2004, but have also agreed to take a pay cut in order for Anchorman 2 to move forward.

While Ferrell was the leading man of Anchorman, the film was very much an ensemble pic that gave its supporting players a fair amount of time onscreen to show off their comedic chops.  The big question is not whether now-established stars like Carell or Rudd would be given more screen time in Anchorman 2 – neither actor is known for demanding preferential treatment as is – but if the cast can recapture the inspired sense of randomness that made their first outing together such a memorable time.

If the fans have their way, Burgundy’s news team will get their chance to try in Anchorman 2.

  1. This is great news. While the first wasn’t Casablanca or anything, it was still a hilarious movie. I think they could recapture the “sense of randomness” with no problems and have plenty of new material options by moving into the 80s.

  2. Tell me this is a joke. I mean I thought Anchorman was hilarious, who didn’t? But a sequel? Really?

    • Foopher I didn’t enjoy it. I thought it was a waste of Paul Rudds talent. He can do better.

It’s been a long time I cant remember if I laughed at all or not. I remember not laughing much at all if at all I also remember thinking “Wow this movie sucks.”

      • It was kind of a so stupid it’s funny movie. But then again people like different movies.

I think we can all agree though that a sequel would just show that Will is running out of ideas.

  3. I think I maybe laughed 4 times watching Anchorman.

  4. Who was upset about this? I really don’t think there’s a need for this to be made. At all. Ever.

    • Are you guys kidding me? Anchorman was one of the funniest movies of all time. “60% percent of the time I laugh every time” and I’ve seen it dozens and dozens of times “that doesn’t make any sense”. You guys probably don’t understand that quote. :) – excellent comedic chemistry between actors by the way. If you’ve only seen it once I suggest watching it again… and then again… it’s one of those comedies where little things are easily missed the first time around and you don’t realize how funny they are until seeing it again. A good comedy is quotable… and this entire movie is quotable. “Milk was a bad choice”. Though I suppose it all depends on what makes you laugh… (Just because some viewers can’t find their funny bone for this type of movie doesn’t mean it’s not funny and doesn’t deserve a sequel.) I actually laughed more watching it the second time… A lot of Will’s movies are like this. Blades of Glory is a perfect example. The first time I watched it I was actually pretty disappointed and I’m obviously a huge fan of Will’s work… I didn’t find it very funny at all – then I gave it another shot, and another, and another… and it got funnier and funnier every time. Lines that I either missed or didn’t realize how damn funny they actually were the first time around caught on during the second and third. These types of movies that rely on there one liners are a lot like songs… most songs we grow to love the most we don’t like at first, they take a few listens to catch on, then eventually you learn the words and your singing them in the shower. This is actually a sign of a good comedy because it provides high re-watch value. “Troubled childhood? Yeah, if you call a 9 year old kid with 35 year old girlfriend troubled?” There are 100s one liners in that movie that are just priceless. “Ice devouring sex tornado”… that’s genius. Now, Blades of Glory isn’t half as strong as Anchorman but COME ON… anyone that doesn’t find Anchorman funny must have a very “interesting” sense of humor. So if Anchorman isn’t funny, what is? Schindler’s List maybe? Just kidding… everyone is entitled to their own opinion… but don’t ruin it for those of us that WANTS a sequel. It seems those that don’t like silly comedies like these take themselves WAY to seriously. I’m proud to say the “Dumb and Dumber and Anchorman” are my 2 all time favorite comedies. It takes a genius to write something that “stupid” that stays funny EVERY time you watch.

      • The guys who said anchorman wasnt a funny movie obviously didnt get the humor, I still watch it from time to time and laugh, a sequel would be great!

      • AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. for those of you that dont remember how good anchorman was buy the dvd and watch it again before you leave a ridiculously biased comment like that. You will laugh your heads off when you watch it and if you dont you have absolutely no sense of humour and shouldn’t be watching comedies anyways.
Anchorman is a great movie and i think a sequel is a great idea!

  6. 60% of the time they should remake this movie every time

  7. Awesome, i don’t get why there are people posting that, “ehh, it might be a good movie” its Anchorman 2 people… now i know what you’re thinking… and yes… i do have a nickname for my penis. I call him the octagon. But that’s not whats important right now. whats important is that anchorman 2 is GOING TO HAPPEN, and I’m going to watch it at MINIMUM 5 times in theaters… Cant wait… Do work Mr McKay. You stay Classy San Diego.

  8. This is one of the funniest movies ever…bring on the sequel….Musk up!!

  9. its so hot, milk was a bad choice. ive been forcing that line into conversations it has no business being in for years. you gotta make anchorman 2 just so we fans can have a brand new script to memorize and quote. and make it on top of a mountain

  10. I like seeing anchorman supporters when there’s all these haters. like come on, I’ve seen so many s***** movies and this has to be one of the best movies I’ve seen (my favorite) there are better things to hate on ppl, like Justin beiber!

  11. Anchorman and Stepbrothers-best comedies ever.

  12. Anchorman is the besssssst

  13. dude this movie has to happen . NOW The most epic movie ever i have seen it thousands of times bring on anchorman 2 dawgs

  14. if you dont think anchorman is funny, you obviously dont get will ferrells sense of humor. its one of the best comedies of the last 20 yrs.

    • Jake gotta disagree.

I get Will Ferrels humor I simply think it sucks is all. It’s i diot (space is on purpose). It’s unintelligent dialogue and a bunch of really d umb characters acting d umb. That’s all there is to it.

Maybe i diot humor is unfair maybe 5 Year old humor is more accurate.

  15. Anyone who doesn’t find Anchorman funny should be chemically castrated. Reality check emo bellends, you are not Donnie Darko.

  16. I will gove any limb for an anchorman 2 to come out i swear by the beard of zeus!!!! Pllllleeeaaaaaassseee!!!!!!!!!!
