The Amityville Horror franchise has been terrifying audiences everywhere since the original movie came out in 1979. Since then, nine other movies have been made about the evil lurking in the house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, the most recent being The Amityville Haunting in 2011.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a new movie is being added to the franchise, and it appears to have a unique twist. New producer and executive chairman of the Evergreen Media Group, Tony DeRosa-Grund, has acquired footage of a seance held in the house in Amityville in 1976 and will be using the video, and the experience of the two reporters who investigated the instances, as the basis for the film. No writer or director is currently attached to the project, but DeRosa-Grund will be using the "found footage" as part of the package he is taking out to the studios.

The original film was based on a bestselling novel titled The Amityville Horror: A True Story, which told the story of the Lutz family who claimed that their house was haunted. Thirteen months before the Lutz family moved into the house, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. had shot and killed six members of his family there, which is allegedly what caused the haunting.

By using the reporters' seance as the basis for the new film, DeRosa-Grund has been able to get around some tricky rights issues related to the Amityville franchise. Calling it a prequel might be technically inaccurate, given that the haunting took place in 1975, but it's a clever way to market the movie and cash in on the Amityville name.

Haunted house movies are a staple of the horror genre, from Poltergeist to Paranormal Activity. There's something truly frightening about the idea that an evil entity can take over your home and start moving your chairs all around the room. Or killing you.
