‘The Americans’ Renewed for Season 3

Keri Russel and Matthew Rhys in The Americans Season 2 Episode 2 The Americans Renewed for Season 3

The Americans may not possess the word-of-mouth appeal of other FX series like Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. However, the spy drama – which stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as a pair of Soviet KGB officers posing as a married American couple during the Cold War – has managed to carve itself a strong niche among viewers and a fervent fanbase all its own.

After a highly praised first season, The Americans returned for season 2 with modest but solid ratings in keeping with its season-one average. Furthermore, the series has proven to be a great asset to FX with regards to the precious demographic of adults 18-49, where its numbers spike considerably (especially when DVR viewings are taken into account). However, despite the fact that its second season has only a handful of episodes left to air, the show had yet to be renewed for another year. Until now.

FX has officially ordered 13 new episodes of the series, confirming that The Americans will indeed return for season three. Despite the show’s less-than-stellar ratings, its renewal isn’t particularly shocking, considering that The Americans has garnered strong reviews and a slew of awards nominations and honors since debuting early last year.

It’s a testament to the network’s faith in the long-term future of the show that it is holding on to The Americans even with a number of high-profile new projects in the works. In addition to the recent debuts of the Coen brothers adaptation Fargo (read our review) and George Lopez comedy Saint George, the network has the David Yates-directed Tyrant pilot in the queue, as well as vampire thriller The Strain from director Guillermo del Toro. All in all, the network is certainly not in a position to be forced to keep shows that aren’t performing up to par.

Exactly how long The Americans will stick around and where the show’s espionage-laden narrative will take it next are questions for another day. In the meantime, it looks like – at least for now – fans of The Americans can rest easy and enjoy the continuing adventures of the Jennings family.

Are you glad that The Americans is coming back for another round of episodes on FX, or would you prefer the network continue its focus on promising new series instead? Sound off in the comments section below with your thoughts.

    :)

  6. saw the first episode and loved cannot wait for more

  7. The AMERICANS is easy on the eye. It is not John Le Carre, but it is pleasantly entertaining but not to be taken that seriously. The Russian spy lady is an abosolute knock-out. No wonder Stan is in a constant sweat !!
I do find it astonishing that it has taken Philip`s wife so long to discover he had a wig ! Even so I really enjoy the show.

  9. POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

I am a big fan. I loved season 1 and 2. There of course is “suspension of disbelief” in any fiction. This is not meant to be an exact history of the cold war. It is entertainment!

Now I must criticize the beginning of Season 3, even though I am enjoying the show. Therefore, as a big fan I have to say that the first episode was HUGE Suspension of DisBelief. First of all, Elizabeth’s fight with the two FBI agents appeared brutal and a short time later she can disguise the seriousness of her injuries from Stan by putting an ice pack on her shoulder? Ok. Then Agent Frank Gaad, the boss, is out chasing down spies? Next, the two agents come to work THE NEXT DAY and both are bandaged up but able to function. Really. Pistol-Whipping of Gaad, the other agent hit by a motorcycle, and they are not in the hospital?

I beg of you, FX, don’t go too far over the top! I also felt the scene in which Analise’s body, in episode 2, is stuffed into a suitcase was just gratuitously gross. That did not have to be shown.

Meanwhile, with my criticisms, still love the show.

  10. Love “The Americans”! Hope it continues for a long time.

  11. Enormously glad The Americans is coming back for Season 3. One of my favorite series!

  12. Definitely one of the top series on television. Viewership will increase in time just like The Game of Thrones did.

  13. YES! I absolutely love this show!

  14. SEASON 3 Just finished up. Now whatnot need to hear is, when will SEASON 4 get approved? I haven’t heard anything renewing for Season 4¿?¿?¿?
