‘The Americans’ Renewed for Season 3

Keri Russel and Matthew Rhys in The Americans Season 2 Episode 2 The Americans Renewed for Season 3

The Americans may not possess the word-of-mouth appeal of other FX series like Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. However, the spy drama – which stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as a pair of Soviet KGB officers posing as a married American couple during the Cold War – has managed to carve itself a strong niche among viewers and a fervent fanbase all its own.

After a highly praised first season, The Americans returned for season 2 with modest but solid ratings in keeping with its season-one average. Furthermore, the series has proven to be a great asset to FX with regards to the precious demographic of adults 18-49, where its numbers spike considerably (especially when DVR viewings are taken into account). However, despite the fact that its second season has only a handful of episodes left to air, the show had yet to be renewed for another year. Until now.

FX has officially ordered 13 new episodes of the series, confirming that The Americans will indeed return for season three. Despite the show’s less-than-stellar ratings, its renewal isn’t particularly shocking, considering that The Americans has garnered strong reviews and a slew of awards nominations and honors since debuting early last year.

It’s a testament to the network’s faith in the long-term future of the show that it is holding on to The Americans even with a number of high-profile new projects in the works. In addition to the recent debuts of the Coen brothers adaptation Fargo (read our review) and George Lopez comedy Saint George, the network has the David Yates-directed Tyrant pilot in the queue, as well as vampire thriller The Strain from director Guillermo del Toro. All in all, the network is certainly not in a position to be forced to keep shows that aren’t performing up to par.

Exactly how long The Americans will stick around and where the show’s espionage-laden narrative will take it next are questions for another day. In the meantime, it looks like – at least for now – fans of The Americans can rest easy and enjoy the continuing adventures of the Jennings family.

Are you glad that The Americans is coming back for another round of episodes on FX, or would you prefer the network continue its focus on promising new series instead? Sound off in the comments section below with your thoughts.

  1. I know this show doesn’t get a lot of comments on SR but it’s really an interesting series.

I didn’t think I would like it considering it was a period series but how they do it is entertaining. The office/political/spy politics is intriguing and it’s fun to see how spycraft was employed back “then”.

  2. I think it’s a great series but I do think it is also one that cannot go on for too long. I suppose in some ways it is like Sons of Anarchy where you know there is only a couple outcomes. The hero either dies or goes to jail. Same with the Americans. It’s a cat and mouse series essentially and you can’t go on too long before the cat catches the mouse. Either the FBI find out who the Jennings’ really are or somehow they end up either betraying the KGB or the other way around.

    • Then again they are approaching the period of the Soviet Union breaking up. I think there just might be an ending where they’re called back because the Soviets are breaking apart….And then we get to se how they deal with it. I can’t see them attempting to take the kids who have never known anything but America to live in Russia. The big question is if they will stay together or will she return without them?

  3. This is a really great show.

  4. Love this series. It’s always edge of your seat viewing. Glad it’s been renewed and I hope FX continues to keep it running.

  5. I love this its awesome I hope they keep going past season 3 to like season6 people need to watch this its a really good written show good actors

  6. This is my favorite show since it began. I’m not sure why not many people watch it yet, But remember even the Breaking Bad everyone talking about now also faced rough times in its early seasons.
it maybe the stereotype that many believe if its not future its not cool, so dont watch it duhh..
I’d rather watch Americans than most of other popular shows.

  7. The show Is awsome.. Having grown up during the cold war, in a house with a bomb shelter in the back yard, I feel a real connection with this show.. The plots are great, the acting is great, and the hand to hand fight scenes are some of the best on television. I hope the show is around for many seasons to come.

  8. Love The Americans…Acting, Writing. Better bring Nina back!! It’s the best thing since Breaking Bad!

  9. This is a great series. One of those shows u just have to keep watching. Downloaded on iTunes and have watched it over the last few weeks. Saving the last episode till tonight. Can’t wait till season 3. Best show since breaking bad.

  10. Fanastic show! The plot twists stay within the characters framework. Keep up the good work.

  11. Watching this great series in Uk on ITV. Always shown really late and believe viewing figures low. It is well researched and captures the era so well. Will series 3 be shown in UK? What a loss if it isn’t

  12. Can’t wait for series 3 of the Americans. It is probably the best tv series I have ever watched.

  13. Just brilliant, really impressed at the absolute quality and attention to detail. Can’t wait for the 3rd series!

  14. the first series was good but the second is really more interesting! and i think the third will be better as well! so.. from Italy… we want the Third!

  15. Really, really great series! I hate shows (just killing time), but not “The Americans”

  16. Have enjoyed both seasons of The Americans. Am glad that it has been renewed for a third season.

  17. Have enjoyed both seasons of The Americans. Am glad that it has been renewed for a third season. It’s a good history overview of the cold war and the mistrust both the Soviets and the U.S. had for each other.

  18. Oh, yes, i believe it should come back. Very interesting series. I enjoyed much. I am looking forward to watch it again. The creators are doing a great job. The charachters are so true. I know the Russians. I lived that time. The show must go on.

  19. I like this show and am eager for season 3 to start. When is it scheduled to begin?

  20. This is a great show. Have seen every episode. Can’t wait for season 3.
I can see this show being on for a few years. Great story. Don’t let Nina
    go back to Russia.

  21. I am part of the 30-40 demographic and I along with many of my other peers, absolutely love this series. It is both interesting and entertaining. It would be heartbreaking for me if this series wasnt continued.

  22. I love this series. I hope it goes on for a long time. I’d be so bummed if it got cancelled, my whole family watches it together all the time! Lets keep it up!

  23. I liked season 1 far better than season 2 but:
Season 2 was still nice – that is because season 1 was 100% awesome and brilliant.
Hope season 3 will catch up more to season 1 again with introducing exciting conflicts and characters, but i fear you just wont be able to top season 1 which has been not a rare problem with alot of us series imo these days (despite Scrubs, Simpsons and Futurama ofc :)).

  24. I am really glad they will return with season 3. I agree, season one was the best but season 2 kept me on coming back for more. I also think it could make it until the Soviet break up and it could be very interesting see how that plays out with the Soviet spies. I am sure there were a lot of KGB agents looking for work after the cold war ended. The writers seem to have a lot of insight into how things went during those days. Keep it coming FX.
