Universal Secures ‘American Reunion’ Writer-Directors for ‘American Pie 5′

When studios take several years to prepare the next chapter in a successful franchise, the resulting films are often considered underwhelming disappointments (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Scream 4 are two examples). So, when word first broke that Universal was prepping a fourth big-screen American Pie film, some fans were understandably skeptical. Even with the full original cast signed to return, could American Reunion recapture the magic that made the 1999 original one of the defining comedies of a generation?

As it turns out, the film did turn out to be a return to form for the series (read our review) and managed a tidy profit earlier this year, with a $233.6 million worldwide box office haul. That’s not the kind of cash Hollywood tends to ignore – even if 75 percent of it was derived from overseas grosses – so it’s no surprise that talk American Pie 5 has already started.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has already secured a production deal to develop the as-yet-untitled American Pie 5 with American Reunion writer-directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg – who also helmed 2008’s Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.

No plot details are available just yet, and there’s no confirmation if the entire cast would return again. However, all four theatrical films have focused – in varying degrees – on the relationship between Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). So it’s likely that a potential fifth film would continue to explore that. American Divorce, perhaps? Kidding, that would be a hard comedy sell.

While American Reunion proved that the cast is just as likable and charismatic as always, its tagline – “Save the best piece for last” – seemed to indicate that the film would serve as a book-end to the series, especially since it contained many references and connections to the original film. The last thing fans want to see is the franchise tumble back into the direct-to-DVD dreck that defined it for the last decade, but perhaps Hurwitz and Schlossberg can keep this Pie fresh for a while longer.

Are you ready for a fifth film, or was American Reunion the perfect sendoff for the franchise? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Definately would like to see another American Pie movie! No straight to dvd, want it on the big screen again. American Reunion was a major hit! I was concerned with them making American Reunion, after the first three were superb! Most movies die out after two, but the American Pie movies just keep getting better! Until the next time!

  2. American Funeral: Finch is pronounced dead during his trip in Europe (mentioned near the end of American Reunion) but they never found his body, they go to the funeral etc… and in the end Finch turns up and says he faked his death.

    • Dude, I would love the idea of American Funeral except you ruined the end for me -_-

  3. I definitely want to see more! I loved reunion and yet it seems there is more to be revealed to us… what happened after Reunion? where are they now? Will they get together the next year? I WANT MORE!!!!

  4. More than ready! These movies are great, all of them. Youth! Fun! The Music! The Emotion! Just they’re not teens anymore doesn’t mean its any less coming of age, because the characters are still kids in a way. It’s kind of beautiful, something I see in my own life. My life has been similiar to these movies and I love seeing it all from the outside looking in, its amazing. American reunion was fantastic, couldn’t have turned out much better. Beautiful movie. American Pie 5 HERE WE COME!

  5. hello.is that american pie 5 is a big kans.en if it will come down where would they come sentiment? soon be over 50 or so would they still be able to make that movie?

  6. Another American Pie movie is a must… i love this franchise and some of the movies that went right to dvd were alright (band camp, book of love)…. all the original cast needs to return to keep it “as warm as apple pie”:).. This turned into a great franchise and i would hate to see it just go away.

  7. Actually.. On one hand, I love the series and would like them to make more.. But Reunion was a perfekt ending

  8. Yep, bring it on!!I think American Pie is possibly one of, if not the best comedy movie franchise of modern film. I think as long as they can get ALL of he original cast, then they should definitely keep making them. The last thing they want to be doing, is changing cast for an already established charachter. If that ever happens…..then you can count me out. Otherwise…….HELL YEH!!!

  9. I really think a trip in Vegas or something for Jim, Stifler, Oz, Kevin and Finch would be awesome for a fifth installment. Who said there was only one pie? Maybe there’s some in Vegas! American Pie V, V for VEGAS baby! Haha but it’s just my opinion.

    • this should not end i love all the four part and i would love to see the 5th one……

  10. American reunion is Awesome n we want more from this guys jim, kev,oz,finch n more from Stifmaster. Good to see back this guys in movie n we want more american reunion n i will waiting from the 5th one this gonna be awesome movie…plz make this movie we are love to this guys see together in American reunion future parts so don’t stop

  11. While American Reunion could be a great book end, there are some resources to draw from especially now that there are families involved.

American Vacation could be a great homage to the original Vacation movies but American Pie style with Jim’s family and some of the gang. They could even just have more about everyone becoming family people first and call it American Family. American Retirement could happen but be a ways down the road from now though.

None of these are technically original ideas but could be fresh with these characters.

  12. Es una de las mejores peliculas de comedia y claro ke debe de salir al 100% yo no me la perderia ademas les recomendaria ke fuera una reunion de stiflers muchas gracias y espero con ancias las 5ta pelicula

  13. it was a dead giveaway at the ending of reunion when jason biggs n(jim) pretty much said at the table “so do we do this again!?” and everyone was like yes! i loved American Reunion and thought that it equaled any American Pie theatrical movie to date:) therefore id love to see a Pie 5 and would be the first one in line to see it!

  14. i pretty much think that in the end, Finch realized that Stifler banged his mom but id love to see the culmination of that and how Finch will react to it just like we got to see all the comical ways that Stifler acted when he found out Finch banged HIS mom lol this definitely could happen in Pie 5

  15. Would love to see a 5th one. Reunion was great and just to piece it up a fifth one wud be great. I love american pie

  16. I’m soooo want to see another American Pie 5 with the original cast!

  17. Loved all the american pie movies best I have ever seen can’t wait to see a new one would be awsome if there could be one where all the stiflers come together kind of a reunion stifler family reunion would be awsome to see all the stifies together causing trouble and haveing fun

  18. I could NEVER hate a new American Pie movie. I’d rather it being a theatrical film than a straight-to-DVD, although I did have a blast watching the straight-to-DVD ones. Not the characters I loved from the first three movies, but credit goes where credit is due.

  19. I’m definitely on board for the “American Vacation” idea. I mean, a Funeral sounds good, but what could they possibly do between the time the funeral ends and the time they find out [insert character] isn’t dead? On the other hand, s*** could really go down on vacations, American Pie style.

  20. Yes there should be another one where chris and heather get married and stiffler settles down and gets married

  21. come on theres gotta be more than reunion they said until next time… i mean ive watched these movies my whole life in my opinion there isnt any movie in my mind that tops these movies thank you all at the american pie franchise for makeing the previous movies if it wasnt for the first three movies i wouldnt of had the confidence i do now plus i bout gave up on the ol stifmiester act but the reunion showed me the fun never has to stop

  22. also i forgot to add that they even said they would see each other every year… come on we want more pie

  23. also i forgot to add that they even said they would see each other every year… come on we want more pie!!!

  24. There are too many stories they could draw from in American Reunion, to not do another one. Let’s say Jim’s dad marries Stiffler’s mom, and/or Stiffler ends up married to Finch’s mom! there were so many openings left that they could do anything! I do have to say the final scene of American Reunion, with Jim’s dad and Stiffler’s mom, has to be one of the best in the series!

  25. i think that another american pie could work out even after they made a final send off with the “reunion” and a devorce could work out. like if they made it where jim and machelle were going through hard times and as is everyone in some way except for stifler which get successfully married, but puts his own marriage in the line of fire to help his friends rekindle the sparks of their own relationships. that would work i think just because what else is there to play off of. i suppose they could pull a kind of a hangover type thing where stifler gets married and they go all out and do vegas or another “road trip” if you will to give a last horrah for the last remaining bachelor. its still doable but i guess it depends on the writers. i would watch it again, i saw the reunion twice in theaters and got the same feeling i did in the first three. ide say do it, for profits and to entertain the world. just dont let it go straight to dvd

  26. i think they should definetly make another with the orignal cast also id love to see more about Heather and oz

  28. How about on the title on the movie it says “A new, fresh, batch of pie!” Maybe the American Pie 5 should be called, depending on what the plot: American _________ or [American Pie 5]

  29. 9.8/would bang
