‘American Pie’ Back On the Big Screen?

American Pie 4 American Pie Back On the Big Screen?

Fans of the very successful American Pie franchise will be jumping up and down at the latest news that Universal is planning on bringing the franchise back to the big-screen with American Pie 4. And this ain’t just hopeful speculation from a fan of the series; the studio has already tapped a couple of writers to pen the script.

After hearing word of AP4 back in Fall 2008, we now have confirmation and more details on it: LA Times is reporting that Universal is poised to hire Harold and Kumar screenwriters, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, to write a script for American Pie 4 (as it’s being called for the time being).

The studio is hoping for AP4 to be a theatrical release, as opposed to being released on DVD as the franchise has been for four films now. And yes, it would likely feature all the original gang, including Jim (Jason Biggs), Stifler (Sean William Scott), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas).

American Pie was a true phenomenon back in 1999 (yes, it’s been 11 years since it came out), setting the bar and perhaps even the blueprint for all raunchy teen comedies to follow. After the first film came American Pie 2 and American Wedding, both released theatrically to huge success ($287 million and $231 million, respectively). However, following Wedding came the slate of straight-to-DVD movies under the “American Pie Presents” banner, including Band Camp, The Naked Mile, Beta House and most recently The Book of Love.

AmericanPie5TheNakedMile American Pie Back On the Big Screen?Oh American Pie what’s happened to you?…

It’s become a joke to me when a new American Pie DVD gets released. But people must be buying them or else they wouldn’t keep making them…

Universal is looking to separate American Pie 4 from those straight-to-DVD releases, thinking the franchise is ripe for a new theatrical run. The studio, however, declined to comment on the development of the fourth movie, which signals to me they don’t want to give out any details at this early stage.

Speaking of it being in the early stage, none of the original cast have been signed to return. But LA Times says several of the original cast members are interested in coming back for another slice. Most of them haven’t done a helluva lot since leaving the franchise, so returning to a previously successful property would be a smart move for them.

American Pie cast American Pie Back On the Big Screen?

One of the big caveats to doing another American Pie with the original cast is what the plot would be. Many of the original cast are now in their early 30s. People are speculating that this new film could catch up with the gang at their 10-year high school reunion (“American Pie: The Reunion?”) or maybe years down the line when they’re struggling with married/family life.

Another problem Universal faces is trying to compete with other R-rated comedies that have become the norm ever since American Pie was released – namely Judd Apatow comedies or breakthrough successes like The Hangover. On the other hand, the studio could use the popularity of these types of movies to get people to pay theater prices for American Pie 4.

I remember when American Pie first came out and it really was a big deal. It was one of those movies everyone asked “Have you seen American Pie yet? No? Go watch it now!” I recently rewatched it and I have to admit: it didn’t make me laugh nearly as much as it did 10 years ago, something which may be a result of seeing a thousand other raunchy buddy comedies since. As long as they can bring something fresh to the franchise and don’t just re-hash ideas (a la the straight-to-DVD releases) I’d be up for reuniting with the original characters.

Would you be up for an American Pie 4 in theaters instead of it going straight-to-DVD? Or is the franchise done? What kind of plot can you foresee for the fourth movie?

As stated, American Pie 4 is currently in the early development stages – but stay tuned to Screen Rant for any updates on that front.

  1. Anyone else remember when Jason Biggs was going to be huge? Now I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he came back for this for the money. Even Sean William Scott, who has been getting steady work for the past decade (nothing breakout, but at least he's been on the big screen) is likely to return.

  2. I Am ready for sure, I wanted another American Pie last year!

  3. Meh

  4. if they bring back the main cast from the first movies i might go see it:) not otherwise..

  5. First was funny. Second was horrid. Third, never saw. Maybe I grew up? I don't know, it should have been funny for me.

  6. Haha. I buy all of the Direct-to-DVD movies. I still think they're great.
But, this would definitely be a good thing to do. I don't really think many of them are doing much anyway. Except Sean William Scott (Cop Out, Mr. Woodcock). Jason Biggs has had a couple things come out. But, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas not much. What about Chris Klein as Oz??? What happened to Oz!!!?

  7. Ross, are you serious? Set the “blueprint”? As far as I'm concerned, the blueprint for raunchy teen comedies was set 17 years prior to American Pie with a little movie called Porky's.

I guess you technically could go back even a few years earlier with Meatballs, but that's more “summer camp” than just straight up raunchy teen comedy.

    @ Vikinglifeguard

I agree, and the third movie was an abortion that was worse than the 2nd.I also saw Band Camp, but only because it was on cable and there was absolutely nothing else on worth watching. It wasn't terrible, but if it were never made,no one would've missed it.

  8. I am sure the main cast will return, even the females; Tara Reid needs something to save her career (not that she ever really had one) Sean William Scott really has just been hanging around and I am sure he will be back. I thought Chris Klein would go somewhere after he came out with his sling of movies (Rollerball and some love stories) but his poor acting drowned his career…fast. Alyson Hannigan really went nowhere as well and Jason Biggs wil always be scarred by the stupid things that he did in these movies; you dont see Steve Erkel getting in any good movie roles do you? The problem for these actors is that they have all been typcasted. Jason Biggs is the guy that you knowed the pie, Chris Klein is the affectionate gay one of the group, Eddie Thomas is that weird guy that did Stiflers mom, and Sean W Scott IS STIFFLER, he might as well change his name. My point is, this is all they really have left. They need to do a mvie like this to gain some temporary popularity back to be able to land those small movie roles in the next decade.
I thought the first 2 American Pies were great, priceless comedies but the third, American Wedding, was lacking on all pedestals. Doubt this will be much better, but I will go see it in theaters I am sure.
I am SURE that we will see them all back on the big screen. Concerned about money, the studio should just make it in 3D, somehow I am feeling that is a possibility in their minds

  9. Alyson Hannigan may not be top billing on the big screen, but she has had a great television career. Lily on HIMYM is hilarious. I can't argue about the rest of the crew.

  10. He was recently in Street Fighter – The Legend of Failure , err Chun Li

  11. Lol yeah I know that. But, I meant where'd Oz go? He wasn't in American Wedding nor was he even talked about!

  12. Yeah it should be about the ten year high school reunion…that would be the most believeable reason they would all get back together. I would see it if they bring back the original cast.
