We had the chance to chat with Craig Perry, the producer behind the American Pie and Final Destination franchises, and get the scoop on what may be happening next for Stifler, “Band Camp,” Levenstein, and the rest of the American Pie gang.

Most notably, the return of several key characters for American Pie 4.

The producer had not originally intended for American Pie to become the lasting franchise that it is:

“When we were making American Pie, we would watch the dailies and say ‘ohh, it might make 30 million!’ You never really know. You just sort of know when things are working, and are grateful that they are working. It is hard to make any movie really, more to make one that actually works.”

American Pie went on to gross $235 million in worldwide theatrical sales – and inspire two traditional sequels American Pie 2 and American Wedding as well as a (more recent) series of strait to DVD releases. Audiences may now see a return to the original storyline and characters, and another theatrical release for the franchise, with American Pie 4.

Harold And Kumar writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are penning the script and are also slated to direct the film - which would bring the original cast back together.

Perry is hoping to have a script to look at as soon as the new year. Technically the “new year” could mean any time in 2011 but the film is already (tentatively) scheduled for a 2012 release:

“If we get a script that everyone is exited about, then it is going to be all about the schedule.”

The producer knows that it will require some maneuvering to get all of the original cast members in the same place at the same time:

“Alyson (Hannigan) has got the show (How I Met Your Mother), and the baby. So there are a lot of people with a lot of things to do.”

Despite the challenges, Perry is determined to see a return of the original cast for the next film in the series:

“If you start whittling it down, then it is no longer what it is meant to me. Those characters have become part of the cultural lexicon, and I think there’s an interest in seeing where they are, because they haven’t been on screen in seven years. I think that’s a very effective way of backing into this is having people wonder ‘what did happen to those guys, what did happen to those girls?’”

It looks like, given the right script, audiences will have an answer to that question when American Pie 4 hits theaters in 2012.

  1. this is epic. Not a fan of the “national lampoon” DVD movies that the American Pie franchise has been dishing out, seeing the original cast will be awesome.

  2. All I can say to this is……YES!!!!! I want to see Oz and Nadia and everyone back. Nothing like WARM APPLE PIE!

  3. I like how they just mention Hannigan as problematic for scheduling. There’s no way they’re gonna have problems getting the original cast back together when none of them have done anything since American Wedding. I’m sure they’re thankful that this is happening because it’s back to not working afterwards.
However, I’m cool with a new American Pie movie. I enjoyed the first one very much.

  4. As long as Stiffler is back, I’ll be watching. The dance off in the third film is one of my favourite comedy scenes of all time!

  5. Im glad they plan to get the original cast back. Loved the first film, 2nd film was great aswell as the 3rd despite not having everybody in it but still had plenty of laughs.I couldn’t make it pass Bandcamp. Bring on the 4th film! It’s Stiffler time baby!

  6. As long as they have Oz back and the script is good I’ll be happy. I loved American Wedding, but it had some issues especially with Thomas Ian Nicholas only having like 3 lines and Chris Klein not even in it! Also they were missing: Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Mena Suvari, The Sherminator!

Can’t wait for another one though! I personally enjoy the Straight-To-DVD sequels. I think they’re just meant to not be taken seriously.

  7. First was good, second was also good, the third went completly south, and the straight to DVD’s are complete crap. This so called 4th installment is totally not needed but the the reason that the cast will return is that they ALL have pretty weak acting careers and they are ALL clinging on to this franchise.
What will we get? More Stifler’s mom and Finch jokes, maybe a newborn baby, and old flames coming back together….Oh and a lot of more stupidity from Jason Biggs

The only saving grace of this will be Stiffler

  8. IF the original cast members return from the first two I will so watch this. Like to see how they are grown up.

  9. No Stifler=makes for a boring movie. SWS has to return.

    • Sean William Scott IS America Pie.

  10. I rather see a 4th film to American Pie series than the see it be rebooted. This is the best comedy series since Porky’s. Im sure Stifler will be back, without him, what’s the point?

  11. should be goood but stifler gotta be in it

  12. “Those characters have become part of the cultural lexicon…” Who does this guy think he is?

  13. hate to be negative, but this will never happen. not with all original cast.
i do wish it would though

  14. A lack of original characters without their original quirks will cause this to falter. Needs cast first, then great script or straight to nothingdom.

  15. i hope they bring it back. i need the original cast back for all the original laughs. the 1st two were brilliant the 3rd one was ok nothing compared to the 1st two. make it bigger better and funnier.

  16. This is great that the original cast is getting back together. The first American Pie was epic…a personal favorite among many high school and college students. The second was awesome too, the third was alright. Everything after that was complete crap. They all have crappy plots and the acting blows, except for Jim’s Dad. Also all the new stifler’s they have suck. I hope they get everyone together for this like they say they will because it will be another great slice of pie that can be apart of the original 3.
