American Idol’s New Judges: Steven Tyler & Jennifer Lopez

Published 5 years ago by , Updated July 12th, 2013 at 10:32 am,

It’s been a shaky couple of years for American Idol – I’m not just talking about the lack of quality contestants (zing!). There’s been just as much disharmony behind the judging table as there has been on the stage (double zing!): first song writer Kara DioGuardi was wedged into the show before season 8, followed promptly by Paula Abdul’s exit from the show after season 8. As a replacement for Abdul, Fox inexplicably tapped talk show host Ellen DeGeneres…who ended up not really judging anybody.

Finally, Simon Cowell – arguably the show’s most beloved character – decided it was time for him to move on to less discordant pastures after Idol‘s ninth season. A short time after Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze was crowned, DioGuardi left the show (or was dropped), while Ellen bowed-out after coming to the realization that she isn’t really good at judging people (she does have that Ellen-brand loveable persona to protect, after all).

At this point American Idol fans are longing for the simple days of Randy, Paula, Simon – but do they still feel that way now that Fox has announced its new judging panel for American Idol season 10?

Truly it’s a new dawn and a new decade for American Idol. Fox announced today via live press conference that the new American Idol judges for season 10 will be Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler – the exact lineup that everyone has been speculating on for months.

While the judging lineup may not be that much of a shocker, it still is unclear what “characters” these new judges will play. Argue all you want about how much “real” is actually in reality TV, but the character dynamic amongst the original “Idol Three” was always clear to me: Randy was the cool uncle, Paula was the boozy mother, and Simon was the disapproving father (with Ryan Seacrest thrown in as the peppy over-achieving son-in-law). One big happy family. What the family dynamic between these new judges will be is anybody’s guess.

The new American Idol judges are giving a press conference to talk about their appointment to panel of the most popular TV show in America. You can watch the live broadcast live HERE (if it’s working), or check back with this post for updates.

In the meantime: How do you feel about American Idol‘s new judges? Did they go with who you expected, or did you have a better panel in mind?

  1. LOL, who cares anymore? I don’t. American Idol loses it’s 2 top judges to bring on Ellen, Kara, JLO, whoever. LOL

  2. Not sure what I think of this. I find Steven Tyler a tad scary to look at, but perhaps that will translate as a good thing if he plays AMERICAN IDOL’s new “Bad Cop”. I like Jennifer Lopez, I just hope she has the warmth and personality to be the new Paula Abdul on the AI judges panel. Personally, I wish they had brought Paula back and gotten a record exec like Clive Davis or David Geffen to replace Simon.

  3. This has to be an upgrade from last season’s judges. Except for Simon and Randy, the improvement of bringing Steven Tyler and J Lo onboard and dumping Kara and Ellen is a plus. However, I still think that fans of the show have tired over the format and no matter who is judging the show, the reality is that Idol is a burn out to many viewers who faithfully watched the show in the earlier seasons.

  4. Hell yes! GREAT NEWS!

  5. One less thing to have to DVR this season. Will NOT be watching. It’s time for AI to hit the shelves and be seen in reruns.

  6. I would much rather have prefered if they brought in David Foster as a judge.

  7. it shoulda been benched afeter the first two shows, that show is a good reason why so much music sucks these days

  8. How can you compare jennifer lopez to the likes of steven tyler the rocker has had over 30 years experience in the music industry compare to Jennifer lopez who has had a couple of hit movies and just 2 few songs for her to be a judge . and to the tune of 10 miillion dollars and trying to be a diva@
I won t be watching american this season I guess you need to be a diva and act like one to get that kinda money
What a waste of 10 million dollars and for no experience !

  9. I’m absolutely thrilled Jennifer Lopez is a judge. Can’t say much for Steven Tyler because I don’t listen to his music, but I’m hoping we’ll have open and honest feedback without being rude.

  10. Bad move Tyler, Perry is pissed. Steve Tyler is a rock and roller, Aerosmith is arguably the greatest American R&R band. Tyler or anyone else is not going to be able to save the show. AI has run it’s course, and it’s done.

    • Yep, it’s kind of looking like Tyler has sacrificed Aerosmith to be an Idol judge. I’m not a big Aerosmith fan (they’re one of those bands that tried too hard to be the Stones, and failed in my eyes), but it’s kind of shame that Tyler is giving up on a legendary rock ‘n roll band to sit behind a desk and hand pick the next cookie cutter phenomenon.

Oh well, it ain’t Perry’s loss.

      • i thought he was fired from the band shorty after his accident? plus..anyways, their music these days sucks, now the 70’s stuff, gimmie that over any crap they have put out in the last 20 yeears

  11. i cant see how siman cowell can be beloved.the comments he gave the contests certainly don`t bring beloved to mind.

  12. I see this going bad. Simon had told it as it really was and everyone else sugar coated it. I could maybe see JLo doing that, but not Tyler.

Anyone think this is odd too with the fact that he just got out of rehab not too long ago? Not a good icon for the kids at home. Maybe he can be the new Paula if he relapses. (I know drug addiction is a serious topic, was just having a bit of fun there, not wanting him to fall off the wagon, I want him to stay clean, just making a joke).

  13. Cowell is totally going to be a key judge for the American X-Factor.

  14. Lopez can’t even sing. What the hell is she doing judging a singing competition?!

  15. Steven Tyler? YES! J-Lo? NO NO NO!!!!!!

  16. Luckily I use my remote control to quickly switch channels when these shows are on.

We have to endure both American Idol and Australian Idol over here. I am so sick to death of what is really a show about up and coming professional karaoke singers.

If they were really any good they would learn to play a musical instrument, write some original songs, join a band, play the bar circuit or rock venues, work their way up like real musicians and bands do in the music industry rather than chasing 15 minutes of fame on a fake corporate talent contest.

  17. Oh geez wont this sham of a show die already..its predetermined and i hated it from the first season.Funny how Tyler resembles a character fromL.O.R lol those lips lol look like they could fall off or flap in

  18. Loved, loved the new judges on the first evening. Great chemistry between Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. Appreciated Randy letting them get their feet wet without becoming overbearing.

Makes me want to see the show all over again. Good job, one and all.
