Amy Adams and Christian Bal American Hustle Images Christian Bale & Bradley Cooper Are Nearly Unrecognizable

The commercial and critical success of David O. Russell’s two most recent films – The Fighter (2010) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012) – has afforded the American auteur the luxury of being able to tackle more of his passion projects. And the latest of those is American Hustle, a fictionalized account of the famous 1970s ABSCAM sting operation that successfully uncovered government corruption and resulted in several convictions of U.S. Congressmen.

Though we hadn’t heard or seen much from the film until now, excitement has been slowly building among fans of his previous work, especially after casting announcements revealed that many of Russell’s past collaborators would be returning, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro.

Now we’re finally getting a first look at that fantastic cast in costume on the 1970s-set film, courtesy of USA Today and Columbia Pictures. In the above image, we see Christian Bale (almost unrecognizable in his getup) playing con artist Irving Rosenfeld and Amy Adams alongside him as his mistress and partner-in-crime, Sydney. In the film, the two have been recruited by unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper), who is impressed by their brilliance and unique skill in the arts of theft and deception.

With Rosenfeld’s assistance, it seems DiMaso may have all the tools he needs to take down some of Congress’ dirtiest players, but when Rosenfeld’s wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) enters the picture, she threatens to blow the entire operation. Meanwhile, the volatile mayor of Camden, New Jersey – played by Russell first-time collaborator, Jeremy Renner – desperately tries to keep his impoverished city afloat in the midst of a recession.

Check out the full-sized photos of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper below:

Like Russell’s past films, the impressive all-star cast will likely be its biggest draw and Russell is certainly putting each actor’s talents to good use by letting them explore new characters.

Said Russell:

“Everybody gets to do something we’ve never seen before. That’s exciting to me.”

While Russell seems comfortable using people he’s worked with before, he’s also added several new names – some unexpected – to the cast this time around, as Michael Pena (Gangster Squad), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) and Louis C.K. (Louie) help round out the ensemble.

With a immensely gifted group of actors, a quirky, off-beat director and an awards-season release, we can surely expect American Hustle to come up in many Oscar contender conversations. The film is said to be somewhat satirical in its approach (as most of Russell’s films are), while also serving as an engaging drama. We hope that combination creates another winner from one of this generation’s finest directors.

  1. They look like Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper to me!

  2. Fantastic cast. Great director. Let’s do this!

  3. Christian bale may get another oscer year either with this or out of the furnace

  4. American Hustle is my pick to win Best Picture this year. David O. Russell’s last two films, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook barely missed out on the award and I really think this film is going to be something special. Russell just needs to edit his films a bit, as some parts of those last two films dragged out a bit even though both were very good. Last time Christian Bale teamed up with Russell, he was awarded with an Oscar. I think this will garner Bale a Best Actor Oscar and along with his two other major roles in Out of the Furnace and Knight of Cups this year, I really think Bale will be finally recognized as an elite and upper-echelon actor. Amy Adams was excellent in The Fighter and has been recognized as a top actress. I think this movie could even get her Oscar attention and put her up with Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway as even perhaps the best actress out there. I was very surprised with Bradley Cooper’s performance in Silver Linings last year and I think this could be big for him as well. Jeremy Renner came up very strong in The Hurt Locker but has since been in some action films and hasn’t gotten much critical attention. I think he will gain some of that attention back that he had with The Hurt Locker. Jennifer Lawrence was excellent in Silver Linings and I really think she is one of our top actresses. I hate shows like The Hunger Games and stuff, but I have to admit she’s very talented. This role should also give her Oscar attention. And let’s not forget about an excellent supporting cast headed by Robert De Niro and Michael Pena. As good as Christoph Waltz was in Django Unchained, I really believe De Niro deserved the Oscar for his work in Silver Linings and that is the movie that has brought him out of his decade long slump. The guy is a legend. Pena also has dramatic talent to bring onscreen. Should be very exciting. Anticipating the release

    • Agree with everything you said.

    • DeNiro was not convincing enough in Silver Linings Playbook.

      • Lies!

        • Truth!

Did you see Silver Linings Playbook?

If you did, you know DeNiro was not convincing. I know that for a fact! :)

          • Ehem….. LIES!!! ;)

          • In all seriousness though, it wasn’t his best role, but I thought he was very entertaining and very good. There were some great moments with DeNiro in that movie.

    • Jeremy Renner also got a lot of critical attention for his role in the Town.

    • While I don’t think DeNiro deserved the Oscar for SLP (Dicaprio did IMO but wasn’t even nominated) I was thrilled to see him actually act for once.
I have the utmost respect for him but over the past decade he seems to have been mailing in every performance.

  5. So Bale’s playing a younger version of Les Grossman?

    • lol

    • Ha, nice

  6. I am reallyookkmg forward to seeing this movie.

  7. Cooper’s skin color is changed and he has jerry curls. Racist! Everything is racist! All movies are racist now. Rise up and complain lol. Sadly, I bet there are people who think this way. Looks like a cool movie though, being serious.

    • Know the difference between a Jeri Curl and a Perm.

Jeri Curls did not come out till the 80s.

    • “I bet there are people who think this way”

Yes, like you, by even mentioning it. Congratulations for the most irrelevant comment of the day.

  8. Is Bale gonna play this role with a ridiculous, nearly unintelligible voice too?

    • Wait, so he’s playing the part in the style of Vin Diesel? Cool!

  9. It seems successful

  10. I will watch any movie with J Law in it but this movie looks to particularly great from the synopsis and the star studded ensemble

  11. Ooh, liking what I’m seeing from Amy Adams, lol.

Anyway, from what I’ve seen when this director and Bale gets together from The Fighter, hopefully we’ll actually see Bale act again in this one. Not like his wooden performance in the Batman movies…

    • I think Superman will be pissed to see Batsie playing around with Lois.

      • This tension will setup the plot for Man of Steel. Bruce messes around with Lois and Superman gets a bit tense about it. Lol, but no in all seriousness the actors look great in their getups.

  12. Christian Bale looks like Ashton Kutcher in these pics.

    Just my 2 cents.

  13. Looking good Amy Adams

  14. Guess I’m the only one who thinks Bale looks eerily similar to Sam Rockwell in this pic? ;)
Nevertheless, I’m really excited to see this movie. Even more so than The Wolf of Wall Street. SLP was one of my favorite movies from last year and the humor O. Russel infuses his movies with is terrific.
