Even though American Horror Story season 2 is still (many) months away from premiering, series creator Ryan Murphy has revealed exactly where the second season of FX’s horror anthology will be taking place.

Speaking at the American Horror Story panel at the TV Academy last week, Murphy revealed that the second season will be moving across the country for its new setting and will be taking place at an institution for the criminally insane that’s set on the East Coast. Returning favorite Jessica Lange will be running the institution, though no additional information about her character was revealed.

Additionally, Murphy also confirmed what many fans had already expected: that American Horror Story season 2 will be a completely new (and separate) story:

It’s a completely different world and has nothing to do with Season 1; there’s not a mention of Season 1. The second season is set in a completely different time period.

When Murphy’s intentions of having an anthology series were revealed shortly after the show premiered, many assumed that the famed Murder House would be a fixed location – along with all the season one characters.

It wasn’t until the body count of series began to rise, that people began to wonder exactly what would happen in American Horror Story season 2. Eventually, Murphy revealed that a new setting and cast would be included in the series’ second season – though it was unclear whether returning actors would still be playing their same characters.

So while we now know that American Horror Story season 2 will have nothing to do with its first season in any way, it’s time to think about what type of storytelling will be inspired from its mental hospital setting.

Granted, horror stories about haunted hospitals are almost as common as horror stories based on haunted houses. That being said, no one can deny the fact that American Horror Story certainly reinvented the telling of a haunted house, so one should rightly assume that they will continue this unique approach with the mental hospital.

Of course, with the news that American Horror Story season 2 will be based in a different time period, the old timey crazed doctor and nurse clichés do begin to set in. That is, unless Murphy’s decision for a different time period included the future as an option.

Whether or not you’re excited about the new setting, it’s difficult to jump to any negative presumptions about the decisions Murphy and Co. decide to make. After the whirlwind adventure that was the first season, one can rightfully assume that the quality of storytelling will continue – no matter the location or the time period.

  1. Love it

  2. I would like to say that the whole idea about having Season 2 have nothing to do with Season 1 is just not fair. If you was not going to tell what happens between Violet and Tate, or Constants and that baby in Season 2 you should have included it in Season 1. I wanted Tate and Violet to get back together? and I’m absolutely positive everyone else that watched this serious does to. You should make Season 2 about them two and that baby. Or I believe you will have a whole lot of un-happy viewers!
