Amazing Spider Man Dr. Curt Connors and Mysterious Figure 570x252 Marc Webb Discusses Amazing Spider Man Mid Credits Scene & Mystery Villain

If you you’ve seen The Amazing Spider-Man by now, you know that one of the lingering mysteries (of the handful left dangling) has to do with a certain scene that occurred midway through the end credits. We had the chance to break that scene down with director Marc Webb at the Amazing Spider-Man press junket, discuss theories about the shadowy villain that appeared in it, and what possible implications it has for Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Needless to say, if you haven’t seen the film, the topic we’re going to discuss is filled with SPOILERS - so maybe you want to just head over to our Amazing Spider-Man review to get an impression of the movie as a whole. Amazing Spider-Man Mid-Credits Scene Discussion

The final scene of The Amazing Spider-Man sees the defeated Curt Connors/Lizard (Rhys Ifans) being locked away in a poorly-lit prison cell. Lightning flashes, and a figure (played by character actor Michael Massee) steps out of the shadows into one of the two slivers of moonlight in the room and proceeds to interrogate Connors. The mystery man wants to know if Connors told Peter the truth about his father, Richard Parker, and Connors responds that he didn’t. The mystery turns to leave, exclaiming that it’s fortunate Connors said nothing and that they can leave Peter alone… for now. Connors, in a noble moment, yells that Peter should be left alone for good – but lightning strikes again, and the mysterious figure vanishes just as suddenly as he appeared.

For my money, I immediately guessed that the nature of the scene (specifically the lightning) meant that the classic Spider-Man villain Electro (see above) was being introduced into the Amazing Spider-Man cinematic universe. I went so far as to suggest that theory to director Marc Webb in our interview – and while he played coy, he was visibly delighted by the guess:

Oooo, interesting! You’re the only person who’s brought that up! I invite speculation, but I will not give you certainty.

Upon a followup question about whether The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy is building towards, perhaps, a saga involving the Sinister Six (Spider-Man villains teamed up as a bigger threat), Webb just let out another “Oooo,” smiled knowingly, and said nothing at all. However, he did say to MTV:

“There is a silhouette as Peter enters Oscorp on a display, which reads our founder, Norman Osborn. And there is a back-story which I will not reveal. We wanted to convey that there were more forces at work than you may have initially thought. That’s all I can say about that.”

Actor Rhys Ifans added:

Connors is sent to an asylum, a high-security asylum, as you would be if you threw police towers across the Brooklyn Bridge… And he’s visited by, shall we say, a representative from Oscorp. How he gets into that cell and how he leaves that cell without the guards knowing? We have yet to find out.”

The part about there being ‘more forces than  you initially thought’ would suggest that there is a larger plot than the machinations of Curt Connors and Norman Osborn, as the film makes clear. The Sinister Six as a clandestine group of mad-science-meets-corporate-villainy types is easy to image in the re-imagined Spider-Man cinematic universe.

Since the time of our talk with Webb, the worldwide audience has gotten the opportunity to see The Amazing Spider-Man, and I am certainly no longer the only person to have suggested Electro as a possibility for the mystery character in the mid-credits scene. Indeed, a quick scroll through our Amazing Spider-Man Spoilers Discussion will reveal any number of fan theories on who that mystery figure is.

  1. The only possible answer;Steve Ditko.He’s come for pay-back!

  2. Has anyone thought that perhaps it could be someone such as Baron Mordo. If you think about it it makes plenty of sense.

    • Considering Baron Mordo is a Doctor Strange villain, no.

  3. I think it could be a member of the Scrier. They can move among the shadows and are involved with Norman Osborn. That or Mysterio because he’s a master of special effects and a member of the Sinister Six

  4. I think it may be the vulture that is in the cell. Based on the age of the character and Electro may be the next villain but not the one in the cell.

  5. It has to be Mysterio. He’s the only one that could have teleported in and out of the cell like that.

  6. I would love to see the sinister six but as of electro being the guy in the cell I’m not too sure if it is. All those villians have a link, a boss if you will. I may be wrong or totally just way off but Kingpin is the mastermind when it comes to hating spiderman and unleashes these villians upon him. Although the guy in the cell is pretty small to be Kingpin but we are just getting introduced, though, in these movies… It could also be Peters dad who knows. Whomever it is it’ll be one badass movie..

    • Well he’s definitely not Electro since Jamie Foxx has not only been cast, but early production photos have been released of him in full make-up.

  8. It could also be Spencer Smythe to help bring in the Kingpin into the movies. (Spiderman the animated series Season 1 Episode 2)

    • Spencer or Alistaire Smythe are so far my favorite guesses. Although, Spencer would be more likely because the figure was older.

  9. I think the next villain will be Electro, not totally sure if he’s the guy in the cell, I’m interested in a Sinister Six but only if it doesn’t sacrifice GG’s being the main villain of a movie.

  10. I have a theory…I have read back issues of spiderman and the link I believe is none of the above but a gangster by the name of Hammerhead.

  11. In the comics, the Sinister Six is a group of villains recruited by Dr. Octopus. Dr. Octopus tries to recruit Dr. Doom, the Green Goblin, and the Lizard. Dr. Doom rejects the offer trying to get rid of the fantastic four. Green goblin believes he can defeat spider man alone. The lizard, which I believe is what is shown at the mid credits, is approached by Dr. Octopus. At this point, the Lizard doesn’t want to do anything to spider man, so he rejects the offer. What is my point? The mid credit scene is between the Lizard and DR. OCTOPUS. This is the last of the comics when the Lizard rejects Doc Oc while Doc Oc is recruiting for the Sinister Six. We will see the Sinister Six being formed in the next movies.

    • Nice… But i still think this guy is vulture becouse he is old :D

  13. What about Alistair Smyth according to the game he worked at OsCorp at the time and was knee deep into Conners work.

  14. Maybe Ezekiel?

  15. I wanna see electro just not the sinister six

    • we herd you the forst damn time

  16. I wanna see electro just not the sinister six.

  17. Dr Noah Body

  18. Someone said morbius thats a good guess and its either him or spencer smythe nd its not electro u retards jamie foxx is playing him

  19. I believe it is possibly Kingpin or Ozborne. I would have never guessed Electro

  20. Hey that can’t be electro because he’s being played by Jamie foxx and I believe either the jackal or mysterio because I think they are
Linked with Richard Parker it could be Osborn though

    • Its not Osborn because they have cast Chris Cooper in that role for the new film

    • did you not hear?

we’ll leave him alone for now. this is for spiderman 3

Its someone from OsCorp… dig deeper ;)

      • Spiderman 3 or a future spiderman.. but prob 3

  21. Have no one ever considered that the man in the shadows might in fact be Peter Parkers dad? Conners yells at him to leave him alone in the sense that conners already know who the man is. I seriously think that it was Peter Parkers dad.

    • Then why would he say, “Did you tell the boy about his father?” instead of something more like, “Did you tell Peter about me?” And why cast a well known character actor like Michael Massee in the part when a different actor plays his father in the beginning? The only answer (if he is in fact Peter’s father), would be cheap tricks to fool the audience.

    • I think I am the only person that agrees with you! He aged through the years, so it obviously wont be the same actor! They are clearly tricking the fans to think its a villain. My prediction is the following:

There will be 5 Amazing Spider-Man movies. 3rd villains are Green Goblin & Carnage. 4th villains are Doc Ock & Mysterio, leading to the Sinister 6 in the 5th movie, where it is revealed that its Richard Parker.

  22. Because if he had say did you tell the boy about his dad, would be to obvious and he does refer to peter as “the boy”, i think they may try to trick the audience.

    • Its electro

      • LOL no :-)

  23. I Think That This Man Should Be Vulture not only becouse i think that he has to be a Scientist becouse its conneceted to Petters Father but also Becouse This Man Was Realy Old This looks like the vulture when he hasn’t sucked anyones power yet… Thanks for Reading :)

    • its not the Vulture because Colm Feore was Cast as the Vulture… My guess is this… If Jamie Foxx is playing Electro, Paul Giammatti is playing the Rhino, Chris Cooper was cast as the Goblin we have curt connors and a mysterious man at the end of Spidey 1… They are obviously setting up for the Sinister Six… now what if they are trying to trick us… What if this after credit scene is so blurred out because they havent put all the pieces together…. Now this is just me hoping for a huge twist and a great way to put the puzzle together… What if they re-visit this scene say perhaps at the end of Amazing Spiderman 2 with more to it than just a confusing and cliff hanging minute of a clip. What if this after credit scene in Amazing spidey 1 hadnt taken place yet. Now here is where i try to make it all make sense. What if Electro is the cause for the Lighting, Mysterio is brought into play and whoever the mysterious man is, my guess being he is in fact Quentin Beck the Mysterio. If not him then Mysterio causes the diversion allowing Dr. Otto Octavius in to try and Recruit for the Sinister six. Originally Green Goblin said no to joining the sinister six becasue he wanted to take Spidey out himself. rhino will probably be freed from prison by Electro and the Vulture or suttin like that. There has been rumors about Jim Carrey on set, possibly leading to Carnage.. Who knows but there is a lot they can do with these movies. Considering they set for 4

  24. Haven’t you considered the fact that the mysterious villain might be actually “chameleon”? He is the one who is the master of blending and intruding secret and unreachable places? I can’t really explain the “teleportation” or the “lightnings” but who can anyways? There is no such thing I remember of in any series besides “Mysterio” but this character doesn’t seem to be him.

  25. I think that its eddie brocks dad.Eddie Brocks dad knew parkers dad and they worked on the symbiote together. Its just a guess idek

  26. The man in the shadows is Spencer Smythe

  27. Isn’t spiderman supposed to be in the avengers? Like sooner than it would take to make 5 more spiderman movies….idk but I think the guy at the end is mystrieo.

  28. it is electro its in the new trailer

  29. Maybe its the guy whos son he saved (not likely), or maybe its the criminal who killed his uncle (in the movie he was never caught) and the criminal is electro or somebody. (it ia quite interesting how they focus on the wanted picture in the end.
