Amazing Spider Man Dr. Curt Connors and Mysterious Figure 570x252 Marc Webb Discusses Amazing Spider Man Mid Credits Scene & Mystery Villain

If you you’ve seen The Amazing Spider-Man by now, you know that one of the lingering mysteries (of the handful left dangling) has to do with a certain scene that occurred midway through the end credits. We had the chance to break that scene down with director Marc Webb at the Amazing Spider-Man press junket, discuss theories about the shadowy villain that appeared in it, and what possible implications it has for Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Needless to say, if you haven’t seen the film, the topic we’re going to discuss is filled with SPOILERS - so maybe you want to just head over to our Amazing Spider-Man review to get an impression of the movie as a whole. Amazing Spider-Man Mid-Credits Scene Discussion

The final scene of The Amazing Spider-Man sees the defeated Curt Connors/Lizard (Rhys Ifans) being locked away in a poorly-lit prison cell. Lightning flashes, and a figure (played by character actor Michael Massee) steps out of the shadows into one of the two slivers of moonlight in the room and proceeds to interrogate Connors. The mystery man wants to know if Connors told Peter the truth about his father, Richard Parker, and Connors responds that he didn’t. The mystery turns to leave, exclaiming that it’s fortunate Connors said nothing and that they can leave Peter alone… for now. Connors, in a noble moment, yells that Peter should be left alone for good – but lightning strikes again, and the mysterious figure vanishes just as suddenly as he appeared.

For my money, I immediately guessed that the nature of the scene (specifically the lightning) meant that the classic Spider-Man villain Electro (see above) was being introduced into the Amazing Spider-Man cinematic universe. I went so far as to suggest that theory to director Marc Webb in our interview – and while he played coy, he was visibly delighted by the guess:

Oooo, interesting! You’re the only person who’s brought that up! I invite speculation, but I will not give you certainty.

Marc Webb Discusses Amazing Spider Man Mid Credits Scene & Mystery Villain

Upon a followup question about whether The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy is building towards, perhaps, a saga involving the Sinister Six (Spider-Man villains teamed up as a bigger threat), Webb just let out another “Oooo,” smiled knowingly, and said nothing at all. However, he did say to MTV:

“There is a silhouette as Peter enters Oscorp on a display, which reads our founder, Norman Osborn. And there is a back-story which I will not reveal. We wanted to convey that there were more forces at work than you may have initially thought. That’s all I can say about that.”

Actor Rhys Ifans added:

Connors is sent to an asylum, a high-security asylum, as you would be if you threw police towers across the Brooklyn Bridge… And he’s visited by, shall we say, a representative from Oscorp. How he gets into that cell and how he leaves that cell without the guards knowing? We have yet to find out.”

The part about there being ‘more forces than  you initially thought’ would suggest that there is a larger plot than the machinations of Curt Connors and Norman Osborn, as the film makes clear. The Sinister Six as a clandestine group of mad-science-meets-corporate-villainy types is easy to image in the re-imagined Spider-Man cinematic universe.

Since the time of our talk with Webb, the worldwide audience has gotten the opportunity to see The Amazing Spider-Man, and I am certainly no longer the only person to have suggested Electro as a possibility for the mystery character in the mid-credits scene. Indeed, a quick scroll through our Amazing Spider-Man Spoilers Discussion will reveal any number of fan theories on who that mystery figure is.

  1. I think the shadowy figure was none other than his creepy cell mate.

    • It’s Alistair Smythe (he was Connor’s friend in College), he was in the Amazing Spider-Man video game, which took place after the movie.

  2. The mysterious man is ELECTRO

    • Im sick and tired of people saying it’s Electro. Electro is being played by a BLACK Jaime Foxx, not an old white dude.

  3. never mind my bad it might be mysterio because Jamie Fox is acting for ELECTRO

  4. Ok it has to be Mysterio. Mysterio teleports!

  5. I think the mystery man is mysterio because if in the amazing spiderman 2 electro won’t have his powers until some accident then how could he have went in there and out.

  6. I found out some more about the amazing spiderman’s future so if you don’t want to know stop reading.

It has already been announced that the villain for the next movie is electro. The script has also been finished so it is time to film it. There are also plans for a venom movie that ties in to the amazing spiderman legacy that is supposed to show the hero and villain in venom.

  7. There are plans of a venom movie and if it is made it has to show carnage as a villain that spiderman and venom must team up against to defeat. At the end carnage gets separated from his symbiote but not after he kill venom. Then spidey webs him up and venom tells spidey that his parents are alive

    • That is good but carnage dose not have a host so he can’t be separated. But I like the idea of the team up.

  8. Does anyone not remember that the Vulture was going to be in the fourth Spider-Man movie and they had cast John Malkovich for the part but it was cancelled for Webb’s film? I have no doubt that it’s the Vulture.

  9. Mr. Mxyzptlk. The pork-pie hat and scraggly gray hair is a dead give away.

    • FYI the hat is a fedora.

  10. I was a huge spiderman fan as a kid/teenager and all of these villains are good but I would think it’s time for his ultimate fight. Only 2 chacacters come two mind and they’ve already put one in the cheesy franchise and done a horrible job with it. Venom. The other has yet to be introduced and he starts out as a very shady character. Carnage. No one came that close to disposing of Spiderman. Just a thought

  11. Every body voted that the guy in the shadows was electro but imbd says that the main characters in the the movie will be SPOILER (spiderman Gwen Stacy Mary jane Watson and electro) Electro is being played by Jamie Foxx

  12. I think it’s the Mad Tinkerer. if you were to pay closely attention to the silhouette figure he’s an old guy so it must be him.

    • Love this answer. The Tinkerer was a very early villain, makes sense!

  13. EVERYONES AN WRONG. its the Gentlemen. The guy who killed PPs parents and the leadrt of the sinister six which, come one we all know, is where this series is leading.

    • I agree

  14. All I have to say is VENOM

    • rightly so, they messed up venom on spiderman 3, was not impressed at all, the amazing spiderman has a great story line for both venom and carnage, a man can hope huh? we need some big grim brain eating brute with no mercy, not some selfish little dweeb in a gimp suit.

  15. There have been rumors that Carnage and Electro are the next villains. I can only hope that is true.

  16. There have been rumors that Carnage and Electro are the next enemies of Spiderman. I can only hope that is true.

  17. I really wanna see CARNAGE!! With a brief Venom appearance to show casidy turning into Carnage!

  18. Please watch/share
    President obama song
    Powerful message

  19. I welcome seeing Mysterio in the sequel, especially if he has that fishbowl helmet on. That would look awesome if they did it right.

  20. going by the thuggish voice and dark characteristic, I would’ve taken a stab at either shocker or scorpion?

  21. Its definitely Mysterio!

  22. I think it may be Norman Osborne. They seemed to know each other, and the man was older and looked white. Sounded like Osborne too. Jamie Foxx is said to play Electro, so I dont think the man in the cell was Electro.

    • Dude I think u hit the nail on the head. Yes I will say it stay in the box everybody. U r taking the story line to fast. Know that its Norman osborn. For these reasons. Jamie foxx is playing electro. The other villains didn’t really know connors or peters dad but norman osborn. But I would say with all the other villains on the payroll. U will see the sinister six an maybe Norman osborn as the goblin in this flick or not at all. But also know that the six work for kingpin. So it will b exciting to see who it could have besides the guy in the cell with connors or. ITS NORMAN OSBORN! !!

  23. The character in the end credits should be Norman Osbourne because peters father worked for Oscorp. Maybe in the beginning of The Amazing spiderman it was his people trying to get the formula for regeneration. And when they took off he wanted to test out a new design, the Green Goblin. And how would Mysterio or Electro know Peters parents? It has to be Norman Osbourne. And I do believe that the Sinister 6 will be in The Amazing Spiderman 2.

  24. The character in the end credits should be Norman Osbourne because peters father worked for Oscorp. Maybe in the beginning of The Amazing spiderman it was his people trying to get the formula for regeneration. And when they took off he wanted to test out a new design, the Green Goblin. Electro know Peters parents? It has to be Norman Osbourne. And I do believe that the Sinister 6 will be in The Amazing Spiderman 2.

  25. It has to be Norman Osborn. And I do believe that the Sinister 6 will be in The Amazing Spiderman 2.

  26. It’s Alistair Smythe (he was Connor’s friend in College), he was in the Amazing Spider-Man video game, which took place after the movie.

  27. The vulture is an old man. The man in the end scene was old. If u listen carefully u can hear flapping wings when the lightning strikes. That’s my guess.

  28. Given that Jamie Foxx is to portray Electro in Amazing Spiderman 2, I think we can safely rule out that the mysterious man is Electro, since the guy’s white and Foxx is black.

This means that the man is another villain all together, which I’m thinking could be either Norman Osborne/The Green Goblin or Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino. The Green Goblin would make sense as he would be Kurt Connors’ boss, and would be concerned as to what Connors might have told Peter. The Rhino would follow on easily due to him being the result of illegal experiments at OsCorp, so it naturally succeeds the idea of Kurt Connors’ own experiments.

Another pretty unlikely theory I’ve heard going about is that the man is the Kingpin. Now I would love that to be true as it would open so many opportunities within the Spiderman Universe to include a vast number of villains such as the Sinister Six, which Electro is a member, so it could link the second and possibly a third film together.

    • Well, it’s obviously not The Rhino either since Paul Giomotti is playing him. And there’s a big chance Colm Feore is playing Norman, so I’d say keep guessing. Someone here guessed Alistaire Smythe, that’s the best one I have heard so far.

      • The only villain that could be in the end credits and that fits all of these facts we know about the strange bloke is:
        He is a white man
        He is old
        He has a hunch
        The villain knows dr Connors
The villain knows Peter and his dad
He has a big part in oscorp
And he had the ability to move other than walking.
The only one villain that fits the mould is the vulture, until facts change that’s the best I got.

        • What you say is true, but who is your second guess?

      • The only villain that could be in the end credits and that fits all of these facts we know about the strange bloke is
        He is a white man
        He is old
        He has a hunch
        The villain knows dr Connors
The villain knows Peter and his dad
He has a big part in oscorp
And he had the ability to move other than walking.
The only one villain that fits the mould is the vulture, until facts change that’s the best I got.

        • Got a fifth guess?

          • Morbius the vampire. He can turn into a bat

      • The only villain that could be in the end credits and that fits all of these facts we know about the strange bloke is
        He is a white man
        He is old
        He has a hunch
        The villain knows dr Connors
The villain knows Peter and his dad
He has a big part in oscorp
And he had the ability to move other than walking.
The only one villain that fits the mould is the vulture

        • Who is your fourth guess?

      • The only villain that could be in the end credits and that fits all of these facts we know about the strange bloke is. He is a white man. He is old. He has a hunch .The villain knows dr Connors. The villain knows Peter and his dad. He has a big part in oscorp And he had the ability to move other than walking.
The only one villain that fits the mould is the vulture

        • Who is your third guess?

  29. they need to redeem themselves with venom spiderman dark and crazy
