Amazing Spider Man 2: Should J.K. Simmons Return as J. Jonah Jameson?

Comic book movie fans will be quick to tell you: one of the best parts of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man movie trilogy – and a case of pitch-perfect casting – was character actor J.K. Simmons playing J. Jonah Jameson, Editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle, the fictional New York newspaper where Peter Parker works as a photographer. With his blustery delivery keeping in perfect step with the comic book version of  J.J. Jameson, Simmons was a scene-stealer in every Spidey movie; which is why the character (and the actor) was notably absent in Sony’s reboot film, The Amazing Spider-Man.

However, it now seems there’s opportunity to right that slight wrong, as Simmons himself let it be known he’s open to returning to the new Spider-Man franchise. The question is: should he be brought back?

Simmons was out doing the press tour for his upcoming show on ABC, Family Tools, when he spoke to Crave Online about the subject of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise – specifically whether or not he’d be open to jumping into it, should the opportunity present itself with the already-in-development sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Always one to keep his work options open, Simmons let be known that if the studio were to call, he wouldn’t be opposed to playing in the Spider-Man movie universe again:

“Oh, I’m open to anything… Obviously that was enormous fun playing that character. A big part of the fun was doing it with Sam and with Tobey. Like I said I literally have not seen the movie. I don’t even know tonally how different it may or may not be. I’m a fan of the actors, the director and everything else. Yeah, I’m always open.”

While that might seem like the standard answer from a working actor who likes to, you know, keep working, it should be noted that not every actor is open to revisiting ground they feel they’ve already covered – or continuing with a franchise after the creative team they worked under has moved on (see: Christian Bale and the Dark Knight franchise). Of course, his words do come without him having seen the actual film, so they could be taken as a bit premature:

“Well, the Spider-Man thing, for those of us who were doing the first franchise, that rug got pulled out from under us like two-and-a-half years ago, you know. So, that water is well under the bridge. I love making those movies with Sam and with everybody, and we had a great time. Now, the studio is doing a different version of it.  But that seems like ancient history. And, because I don’t get out much, I haven’t seen the movie or the Broadway play or the cartoon, which I do a voice on.”

J. Jonah Jameson wont be in the Spider Man reboot Amazing Spider Man 2: Should J.K. Simmons Return as J. Jonah Jameson?

Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' Trilogy

Simmons is a pretty tireless actor, so his statement above isn’t surprising, and clearly his ties to the Spider-Man property run deep. But again, the question is: should he be brought back?

  1. On the one hand: of course. As stated, the man is awesome at bringing J. Jonah Jameson to life onscreen. Some things just don’t need changing.
  2. On the other hand: no. Amazing Spider-Man is a new version, with a new approach, tone, and interpretation of the characters. J. Jonah deserves the same chance at (semi-)reinvention, with a new actor putting his own stamp on it.

    • i think that the actor that played Q in the previous movies, has died when they film casino royale… my two cents

      • nope, John Cleese is still alive and well

        • I think Garcia was talking about Desmond Llewelyn, but if not you’re right.

  1. He should definitely reprise his role!
    It’s a no-brainer IMO.

  2. I would be completely ok with this. Simmons had the best character by far in Rami’s spiderman trilogy.

  3. I’m ok with it, he was fantastic, but i dont know how is charisma for the character would mess with the new series. It may be distracting and out of place.

on a side note, does anyone watch “Legend of Korra” (its a great show, you should). JK Simmons plays the teacher Tenzin and i can never tell that it’s him. When i found out i was expecting J. Jonah Jameson or Juno’s dad. I watch the show and he is very calm in the way he speaks, anyone else notice that?

  4. He hasn’t watched Korra yet? That must be his first priority then. Just kidding. Not really.
I think it’d be awesome for him to reprise the role. There really is no other actor who looks like or could act like J. Jonah Jameson besides J.K. Simmons anyway.

  5. Bond is the prime example. Everybody was recast; Judi Dench stayed on as M. I would probably tone down the character, but Simmons is the only actor I can envision in the role.

  6. COME BACK!!! Nuff Said

  7. Even if they “re-invision” him from being from Ultimate universe or any other universe of Marvel, he still acts like that, the hot headed editor in chief.

I’ll be open to have someone else play JJJ, but honestly, who could do as good as this guy?

Bring this guy back, he made spiderman have the added humor it needed, and the new spiderman the humor it SOOO desperately needs because of it being “darker and grittier” then the original trilogy.

    • I disagree. The Ultimate Jameson is different from the 616 version. A lot.
And I’d like to see another actor portray him. It’s a reboot after all.

    • I know that Alex Kirkman and Roberto Orci have a mixed reputation, thanks to their work on the Transformers movies, but their work on 2009′s Star Trek gives me hope. I think that they’ll be able to take the potential that the franchise has, and do something with it. Like I said below though, Simmons is capable of putting a twist on the character to fit the tone of this franchise. If he does come back, it’d probably be fine. TASM did well by bringing Garfield in IMO, and I think it’d be fun to see a more talkative Peter Parker go toe to toe with Simmons’ Jameson. Jameson wins like he always does, but the Spider-man vs. Jameson rivalry should be a little more fun this time.

      • If it’s there.

Also, I’m trying to make a distinction between Spider-man and Jameson interactions, and Peter Parker and Jameson interactions.

  8. I’m certainly not opposed to him reprising the role as he was fantastic in the original trilogy, but I don’t have a problem with them recasting it either as ASM did have a bit of a different tone the the Rami trilogy.

  9. He is Jonah brought to life, I hope he does get recast in this film, besides like a few guys mentioned already, the Bond franchise, showed it can be done so why not…

Plus I’m Sure it would make for one killer-surprise in the Trailer for Amazing Spider-man 2, just end the trailer with Simmons as Jonah! LoL

  10. I like the idea of him returning, I consider that a homage to the original trilogy.

  11. Loved him in raimi films and would love to see him play again. Could be like when they reboot bond and kept dench as m. If not really curious to see who is picked.

    • Yeah I definitely would like 2 see j.k reprise the role of jjj with a more serious tone. I’ve always believed that raimi ,didn’t improvise the hatred that the jjj character has 4 spidey enough in his films.

Another thing is that if they introduce the scorpion into the series (which I hope they do) then they definitely have 2 bring fourth more of the ruthlessness in Jameson because he is important piece in the creation of the scorpion.

  12. i would be okay with it all the way .

    • Really makes you love a guy like Andrew Garfield, who’s read Spider-Man comics since he was a kid and looked up to him as a role model. Not to mention when he attended Comic-Con dressed as Spidey and said how it was a dream come true. Class act.

      • @Jackson: My thoughts exactly.

  13. I wouldn’t mind his coming back at all. JJJ wasn’t in the first Amazing Spidey movie anyway so he didn’t miss anything.

  14. It’s funny..I’m a HUGE spiderman fan & when I heard of the Amazing Spiderman’s universe getting it’s own movie the first thing I said to my girlfriend was “what sucks is they’re not going to be able to get anyone closer to JJ then the orig already did” Just becasue in this universe P. Parker looks different doesn’t mean JJ has to look different too! I think it’d be 100% perfect if they bring him back & they’re dumb if they don’t do so!

  15. Yes bring him back. He is Jameson the same way…
    Judi Dench is M.
    Micheal Caine is Alfred.
    Gary Oldman is Gordon.
Chris Evans is pre-serum sickly Steve Rogers.

    • Oh yes when the inevitable Batman reboot comes around I am so going to miss the supporting actors so much. It was almost perfect in each film. I felt these actors embodied the characters completely well.

  16. HELL YEA DO IT!!!

  17. I think Simmons is a good enough actor to put a slightly different spin on the character that still feels right, but remains iconic. This version of Jameson, if there is one, should feel different than the Raimi version (which was basically the Jameson from ASM comics), but not too different. Afterall, TASM wasn’t as tonally separated from the original trilogy as everyone thought it would be.

Don’t get me wrong, Uncle Ben, Aunt May, Gwen, Dennis Leary, and of course Peter all felt very different. But the background characters were oddly similar: Flash was kind of a cheese ball (he threatened a girl), the old school nerdy kids discussing the physics of Spider-man’s swinging, the construction worker that screenrant made fun of in their podcast, etc.

Anyway, I say bring Simmons back, but tweak him a little so that he fits in with the new tone. As much as people love to dislike Ultimate Spider-man comics, I think the Jameson character is serviced pretty well in that book. His mannerisms and dialogue is still true to the heart of the character as written in Amazing Spider-man, but it has a more modern spin to it. It works.

  18. Why not, he’s a good actor and was perfect a JJ Jameson. I love his Tenzin in Avatar

  19. reboot and recast IMO. Like mentioned before the universes are different. He was AWESOME but its time for a different feel. In ASM the Daily Bugle is a media mogul not just a newspaper…time for change…let it go and rewatch the old-trilogy to see him in his glory

  20. J.K. was great, but since it’s a reboot they should just stick with new actors. Now that House is over I think Hugh Laurie would be a good fit.

  21. Simmons all the way. You just cant mess with perfection.

  22. I know I’ll get criticized for this but back in Burton and Schumacker era of Batman with constant changes in the lead role of Batman and everything else they kept the same guy to be Alfred. So can’t we do the same for ole J. Jonah Jameson and keep J.K. Simmons? Yes I realize this is a reboot of the series and all but seriously Simmons owned that role and personally I can’t see anyone else performing that role as well.

  23. thaat would be amazing, he was perfect. hope he would return
