WARNING: THIS VIDEO MAY CONTAIN MILD SPOILERS!
Next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hopefully improve on the artistic shortcomings of last year’s overall-successful relaunching of the Spider-Man cinematic universe (with The Amazing Spider-Man). Yet, of late, it seems that all the discussion about the film amongst fans has been centered around the prospect that the superhero sequel could setup an appearance by the Sinister Six in a future installment.
The Sinister Six, for those unaware, is a group of supervillains from the Spider-Man universe that generally includes Peter Parker’s most iconic adversaries: the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Vulture and so forth. We’ve have been speculating that the Sinister Six could appear in the Amazing Spider-Man movie universe for a while now, dating back to our interview with director Marc Webb about the mid-credits scene in the first installment.
However, over the past several months, Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Paul Giamatti (Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino), Jamie Foxx (Max Dillon/Electro) and Chris Cooper (Norman Osborn… and eventually Green Goblin?) have all made comments that do seem to indicate that the Amazing Spider-Man producers aren’t just being mean and pulling everyone’s collective leg by dropping so many unsubtle hints that the Sinister Six could face off against Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man.
During a new interview featuring Foxx and his White House Down costar Channing Tatum (where the latter mentioned his interest in playing Gambit in a future X-Men movie – not touching that one…), the former revealed that there is, in fact, a discussion going on behind the scenes – while also dropping what could be a MILD SPOILER at the same time (read it, if you dare, after the jump).
Here is the quote from Foxx, from his interview with Total Film:
“Yes, they actually talked about it, the Sinister Six. So, fingers crossed, because when you think about it, electricity never dies, it just goes to a different place, so…”
The implication seems to be that Amazing Spider-Man 2 will conclude with Electro seemingly dead (or presumed to be), though it’s also possible that the superhero blockbuster will leave the door open with a credits sequence that teases Foxx’s return (SPOILER: this comic book movie sequel uses a similar trick). Having said that: at this stage in the development of the superhero genre, you should know better than to assume that anyone is permanently dead, regardless of whether they possess fantastical abilities or whether they as physically-ordinary as you average person in real life (cough, Agent Coulson!, cough).
Webb has said that the fourth Amazing Spider-Man installment – which is already scheduled for theatrical release in 2018 – could be more than just your run of the mill Spider-Man movie, so the obvious assumption is that the Sinister Six teamup won’t happen before then (lest their appearance end up feeling rushed and weaken the over-arching narrative). That concern aside: as we’ve mentioned in past articles, a movie about a group of supervillains – whose inflated egos and megalomaniacal personalities result in their team dynamic being dysfunctional at best – could be quite innovative, as far as the modern superhero movie genre is concerned (jokes about the villain teamup in the 1966 Batman: The Movie aside); in other words, we’re all for it.
Now, it just remains to be seen which of Spidey’s rivals could be featured in the lineup, in terms of the antagonists who’ve already been established (Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard), characters like Rhino and possibly the residents of the Ravencroft Institute – who are expected to be used in a limited capacity in the self-contained storyline for Amazing Spider-Man 2 – and those who may well be teased in Amazing Spider-Man 2, before fully blooming in the third installment (Chris Cooper as the Green Goblin? Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn as Venom or Green Goblin II? Felcity Jones as either Black Cat or Menace?).
How about it, Screen Ranters: who do you want to see included in the Sinister Six in a future Amazing Spider-Man installment? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in U.S. theaters on May 2nd, 2014, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on June 10th, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4th, 2018.
