This past weekend at Comic-Con 2013, director Marc Webb sat down with Screen Rant to talk about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3. In our interview, Webb discussed some of the themes of the movie, as well as the abundance of villains in the film (and how they might extend into further sequels).

This second point is one that Webb has been talking about a lot lately, as some fans have openly worried that the sequel will suffer the same flaws as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.

In a different interview with Crave Online, Webb addressed the number of characters in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and explained how some of their cameo appearances that will set-up a bigger story for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (and perhaps even The Amazing Spider-Man 4).

Marc Webb Says Amazing Spider Man 4 Might Be More Than a Spider Man Movie

Reiterating some of what Webb told us, the director said that Rhino is just a minor character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2:

“I think the main obstacle, the main villain of this film is Electro. He is our primary focus and it’s somebody that has extraordinary, antagonist potential. The other thing is, it was sort of fun to tease out little bits and pieces and have references, for people who are hardcore fans and Rhino, I think, is a better example of that.

“Listen, it’s not the whole storyline. It’s not deeply integrated into the plot. He’s not distracting, I think he’s really elemental and fun to play around with and incredibly justified but it also allows, I think, hardcore fans a chance to see what we do with him, with that character in a way that has enough nuance to feel real but doesn’t distract from the film.”

As we’ve discussed in previous articles, Rhino isn’t the only character Webb plans to introduce for the series. Felicity Jones will possibly appear as Black Cat, Dane DeHaan could appear as some version of the Green Goblin or Venom, and Shailene Woodley might even eventually appear as Mary Jane Watson.

But Webb isn’t stopping there. For The Amazing Spider-Man 4, he plans to introduce even more characters and build out the universe even further – possibly even other heroes:

“I think [for] the fourth movie, what we’ve discovered is there are so many ancillary characters, that have enormous, cinematic potential that there may be other ways to exploit those characters, in a way that is exciting and fun and worthwhile. It might not just be a ‘Spider-Man’ movie.

“You know, what was fun about the comics is that there’s an entire sort of encyclopedia of characters and stories and histories and nuances and idiosyncrasies and off-shoots. I think that that is something that seems to be really successful and has a lot of potential so it’s sort of, as yet, undefined, but intentionally so.”

It makes sense why Webb and Sony would want to explore as much of the Spider-Man world as possible by bringing in new characters. Of all Marvel’s flagship characters, Spider-Man has one of the richest histories and there’s plenty of great stories to mine for material.

Spider Man versus All His Villains Marc Webb Says Amazing Spider Man 4 Might Be More Than a Spider Man Movie

That being said, there are always risks to introducing characters and not paying them off. Will Rhino work as a minor villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Probably. Will his appearance successfully tee up a larger story (possibly involving the Sinister Six)? Maybe not.

As much as The Avengers demonstrated that audiences are willing to watch a movie with lots of characters, there was a lot of deliberate build-up to that film. Will non-fanboy audiences be able to make clear connections between all of the Spider-Man villains from one film to the next, especially if they’re as cryptic as The Gentleman (which was another possibility Webb talked about with Crave)?

In any case, there’s plenty of time to debate Webb’s big plans until Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s release date. Let us know what you think in the comments.

  1. I never thought multiple enemies was one of Spiderman 3’s problems so I’m all for throwing as many at him as they can.

    • I agree. It’s how they are presented or how the story is written that’s crucial.

    • You’re right man. I enjoyed Spiderman 3, but when I found out how off the story was for Venom to be killed, The New Green Goblin to look like anything but, for Gwen Stacy to be a weirdo, and so forth, then I realized why fans were pissed off. The actors, however, did a fantastic job, so I don’t blame them, I blame the story tellers.

    • @ Nick

Same here & I been saying it all along since. Imo, I didn’t even count New Goblin as Spidey 3’s villains with the way they played out Harry in the film. Venom didn’t show up till 3rd act. Each of Nolan’s Batman films had 3 or more villains & no-one said nay. So obviously, imo it had something to do with the film itself. Raimi didn’t even want Venom but only put him because Sony wanted him to due to fan’s request.

    • @nick – They built up the tension between Harry and Peter so much in the second film and then they got rid of that story with amnesia. Amnesia! They must have hired one of the best writers from daytime soap operas to get that gem of writing.

Too many villains wasn’t the issue. Too many people having liberties with the script, that was the issue.

  2. Introducing a villain like Rhino is perfect for this film. They’re saying that in this film, Peter is feeling a little cocky as Spiderman, so him making a fool of Rhino will be funny, and a way to show off that cockiness.

And I think the reports of Harry playing someone else is a stretch. He just may only play Harry in this film.

    • The Rhino is the perfect villain to be fighting spidey right at the beginning of the film to show what he has been up to

      • Exactly.

  3. I may be grasping at strwas, but is it at all a possibility for the 4th film to feature some sort of hero team up to battle the Sinister Six. Of course, I’m not talking The Avengers or anything. However, Fantastic Four could be cool.

    • I mean yeah they’re could be a team up, but it’ll be stupid. If Harry somehow discovers Peter is Spiderman and he becomes the Goblin to help him, and if they make Flash Venom, and he decides to help out Spidey. It’ll be better for them to just focus on spidey vs the sinister six by his-self

      • Well ya, if they do it like that it’ll be stupid. Think about it, though. Spider Man struggles to defeat the one (possibly two) villain(s) in each movie, then they decide to team up, yet he still beats them? That would be even more ridiculous.

        • Yea being completly honest it cant be Spider-Man vs 6 villains cause if he wins then that will be really stupid. He prob will at least team up with Black Cat. And he has to team up with at least 1 or maybe even 2 more characters.

  4. Sounds great so far. Rhino is also an interesting choice to have in the movie without having a significant story line. It might showcase Spider-Man cockiness Webb was talking about the other day by easily taking the Rhino down. With all the Sinister Six commotion I’m REALLY hoping they can fit the Venom in here, he truly needs his time to shine and they’ve got Dane DeHann, who in my opinion is the perfect actor to play him.

  5. My prediction, the Green Goblin will be the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with some smaller side villains. Mary Jane will be introduced as a friend of Gwen Stacy and take an interest to Parker but nothing too major(no Spider Man 3 love triangle.) In it the death of Gwen Stacy will happen by the end bringing peter to a very low point. In The Amazing Spider-Man 4 Mary Jane will help Peter with emotional support leading to a future relationship. Also the sinister 6 will come about and Spider man will be no mach at first but manage to fend them off temporarily. In the middle of the film he will some how get the symbiote. The added power will allow him to defeat the Sinister 6 but either in this movie or a possible fifth movie will need to get rid of it, leading into Venom.

  6. It’s a huuuuuuuuge stretch…. but… Secret Wars?!?! PLEASE!?!?!

    • Not possible due to character rights issues.
Unless Sony, Fox and Marvel collaborate.
I doubt it’ll happen anytime soon (if at all!)

    • Ah man, THAT would be off the scale!! Secret Wars was my intro to so many Marvel Characters, just about everybody was in that, Deadpool and Red Hulk aside, it was way before their time. I know it’s extremely unlikely due to legal wranglings, but still, we can but dream.

  7. I love the first Amazing Spider-Man despite its flaws and I am really excited for this. That being said, a part of me deep down wished it would go back to the first 2 movies and just focus solely on the characters and the movie at hand instead of like, ok we’re making Amazing Spider-Man 2 with the intent of continuing certain stories characters and plot threads 3 sequels from now. I love the idea of a bigger, deeper Spider-Man movie universe but I’m a bit scared. But for me personally, nothing that Marvel Studios, Fox, WB/DC or even Sony does will ever top Spider-Man 2. I LOVE SPIDER-MAN 2.

    • Agreed! SM2 for me was the definitive Spider-Man movie.

    • +1000

      • For me, the definitive Spiderman movie was The Amazing Spider-Man. The previous trilogy just didn’t do it for me. Too campy and cheesy and didn’t do the characters justice. You can tell they were movies written and directed with children in mind.

        • Made for children? Go back and watch Spider-Man 1 dude, that last fight scene was pretty brutal considering it’s a Spider-Man movie. And *spoiler alert* Green Goblin getting impaled by his own glider was a violent death. And Doc Ock going crazy on the doctors was a intense scene too. I’m just defending Spider-Man 1 and 2, say what you want about 3, its crap.

          • +100

Green Goblin vs. Spider-Man was intense, it made me wonder I’d he was actually going to die or not in my first viewing (opening day).

Also, I love this little scene from SM2:

“You’ve stuck your webs in my business for the last time. Now you’ll have this woman’s death on your conscience!”

Even though Ock doesn’t know that it’s Peter Parker, he “attacked his heart” like Norman Osborn did. Reminds me that Otto is a genius and that he would’ve killed Peter if that wasn’t Aunt May.

SM3 isn’t all that bad IMO. 3 villains is cool, but Raimi didn’t even want Venom so we didn’t even get his best work. I didn’t like the fact that even after Harry took the Goblin serum, he was still Harry without the Goblin persona. It would’ve been awesome to see Peter be hunted by his old enemy, would’ve added more suspense.

Venom…frustrates me because he was so small, we saw more Eddie than Venom, and he used “I” instead of “we”.

            • *if, not “I’d”

        • @Dazz

Same here. The first trilogy did nothing for me, it was just too boring. The only thing I really appreciate was Doc Ock and the train sequence. If you take a few stupid things away from TASM, it would be a perfect Spiderman movie imo.

          • You mean the first half? I didn’t start enjoying TASM until he actually had the full suit as Spider-Man, it tried WAAAAAY too hard to be a different origin from Raimi’s and apparently they don’t get the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

          • I could’ve done without the silly crane scene in the last spidey film. Other then that, much preferred it to any of the first three. Tobey Maquire’s permanently smug expression, no matter what the situation, just jarred me. Not a fan.
I’m sure Webb mentioned setting Rhino up for a bigger part in ASM 3, King Pin would be awesome too. But maybe they’re holding him back for a possible appearance in a new Daredevil venture or perhaps Deadpool, who knows?

  8. I’m a little confused by what he means not just a spidey film could someone elaborate for me please

    • I assume he means a Venom movie or Black Cat spin off or something like that. There’s only so many Spider-Man supporting characters you can make a film for.

  9. I think they are taking the Harry Potter approach. Or Star Wars before it. Serialized movies.

Rhino takes up a civilian criminal fight scene (truck chase). Caught by Spidey. Prison, breakout and fight from that machine thing
against Spidey and lose but escape. Later in the film is being shown in transformation by Otto Octavious at OsCorp setting up appearances in ASM3. It could be under five mins of split screen time over a 2 hr movie and be effective in introducing two major villians.

At some other point in the movie Otto can give Norman something that is supposed to cure him but turns him all Gobby. That whole subplot plays out and intertwines with Harry.

These could all be cut away scenes and be effective without taking away from Electro/ Spidey or Peter/Gwen.

    • As much as I desire new antagonists to be introduced in this new Spidey franchise, I love the idea of an evil-turned OsCorp employee ,Doctor Octopus, outsmarting Norman by transforming him as the Goblin while Norman takes the serum for the sake of his health.

I am against the idea of linking Fantastic Four to Sony’s Spider-Man since I want the Fantastic Four to be rebooted because of the events in X-Men: Days of Future Past. I would rather see Spidey/Venom/Black Cat kick ass together.

      • Although having the Fantastic Four in the ASM franchise would replicate the first Amazing Spiderman comic, they just would not work in the environment created by Webb and would be better off in Joss Whedon’s Avengers universe. Daredevil, on the other hand, would be a welcomed asset to the Sony film because he could fit in that environment of dark and gritty. He has also helped Spidey before in the comics and animated series. With Dexter only having less than a season left to go, they can get Michael C. Hall to play him.

  10. It would be interesting if the newly rebooted Fantastic Four could be woven into the Amazing Spider-Man universe. In the comics, Peter did try to join them after all. He looked up to them since they represented the face of superheroism that he could never be. Easter eggs or cameos, take your pick. But I think, if set up right, a Spider-Man/Fantastic Four team up against the rumored Sinister Six would be phenomenal. It could be in the cards.

    • Rights issues Fantastic four’s with Fox Spiderman is with Sony

  11. I predict Spider-Man will come out of the closet and then will be raped by Dr. Octodong

  12. I hope Marc Webb isn’t directing that many Spider-Man films. Amazing was not so amazing. Bit of a hack job.

    • That wasn’t really Marc Webb’s fault just more good old fashioned Sony meddling. Hopefully they’ll cool it a bit and actually have faith in their director this time about.

      • Sony meddling. Just like with SM3

  13. Sony you fools for the fourth movie it is simple give the alternate dimension spidermen like they did in the last few episodes of the 90’s animated series, introduce madame web, and fight the sinister six or some other big super threat.

    • THIS GUY! JACOB! you are so right!!! I want this so bad and it would be cool to see Garfield act like the different spidermen. You are amazing! Thank you.

      • Haha no problem dude. I actually thought it was a missed opportunity on Sony’s part not to have had Madame Web narrate the beginning of AMS saying something like there are many paths we take in life but what if there are other realms where versions of ourselves are taking different paths, you may think you know the origin of Spiderman and the life of Peter Parker but you would be wrong. During the intro they would show flashbacks to the raimi trilogy so they would be respecting what came before and saying that is awesome and still relevant like how JJ Abrams used time travel to make the new Star Trek films respect the past but do their own thing.

        • Jacob has cool ideas.

        • That’s pretty much the plot of Shattered Dimensions. Which I thought was very interesting, but that would mean Tobey would have to come back as the “Amazing” Spider-Man, while Andrew would be the “Ultimate” Spider-Man.

It would only be the only freaking way to convince Webb to use Mysterio so I’m up for it, but slim chances of it happening.

          • Yeah I know but still fun to dream 😀

  14. Spiderman & Fantastic 4 vs. Sinister Six

    • FF is Fox owned

  15. What heroes does Sony have the rights to?

    • just spiderman

      • What other ‘Heroes’ or anti-heroes are there in the spider man universe?
Venom, Black Cat, Green Goblin &…

        • Man, Spiderman is not your average Avenger. He has the biggest pool of villains out there that even some spidey fans don’t know. Use google, hundreds of them….
Spiderman doesn’t need Avengers/FF to make next Bondiana(if Sony will ever go this route) its they need him.

        • The Prowler and this other kid called Rocket Racer are two that come to my mind are the only other ones that in the Spiderman universe besides the ones you mentioned.

          • Ben Reilly (if they’re ballsy and want to further the genetic Oscorp creations) is another.

          • Didn’t Black Widow make her first appearance in the Amazing Spiderman comics?

  16. Completely just brainstorming here. It would be cool if Sony did something no other studio has done before. My idea is to bring Tobey McGuire back as Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield. Kind of like Shattered Dimensions (Spider-Man video game). It would never have been done before (Xmen DOFP doesn’t count as it appears to be in the same universe). Would need a good story to have a shot to work, whether it was the sinister six or maybe Carnage. Would be cool to see 2 Peter Parkers take on the sinister six. Imagined Garfield’s wisecracking with Tobey’s seriousness and somewhat leadership. This proabably wouldn’t work, but it would be cool to see.

    • Thank you someone mentioned carnage

  17. So who has the rights to Morbius? Marvel or Sony? I know that he’s an enemy of Spidey’s but he’s an enemy to Blade as well. Morbius is the reason that Blade is a daywalker.

    • He was solid part of Spiderman history and since Disney can grab Magneto’s offspings because of the same reason i am sure Sony can grab Morbius just fine.

  18. Of course ASM4 will feature the Sinister Six, it just has to be determined who will help Spidey defeat them (Black Cat, Venom etc). I know Sony’s trying to set up a Venom movie or movies, so I fully expect to see a version of him in ASM3.

  19. I’m thinking the “Face it Tiger, you hit the jackpot!” line will come at the end of TASM 2.

  20. Here’s my prediction, Spidey 3 will have Venom and Kraven. Spidey 4 the sinister six.

Amazing 3: Jameson hires Kraven to hunt the two spideys, because Harry was infected with the symbiote that Parker rejects. (no eddie brock, too bad) And has been wreaking havoc as Venom. Spidey tries to tame Venom all the while Kraven hunts them. At the end Venom is in prison and Cletus Kassady helps a breakout. The prison is now Ravencroft Ins. Carnage is born. Spidey and Venom both defeat Carnage. Norman osbourne enlists Venom and Kraven. (Venom replaces Doc ock from the six line-up, thats what they’ll probably do)

Amazing 4: Spidey and Black Cat fight the cinematic sinister six, lead by a new Norman Osbourne/Green Goblin. They are Lizard, Electro, Rhino, Kraven, Venom (instead of Ock) and Gobby himself, although they may make him the Hobgoblin for a variation. Then Spidey has an insider in Venom, who changes sides, saving spidey at end.

    • I read that Colm Feore is playing Vulture/Adrian Toomes. Yet another candidate for the six. There’s no room for Mysterio, too bad.

  21. The studio royaly stuffed up Sam Raimi’s version of Spiderman by trying to stuff it full of villains so how do they solve the problem?

Sack Raimi and do it again.

Just stuff it full of villains. How do people with no clue get to spend millions of dollars making films?

    • The movie hasn’t even come out yet, so how do you know it’ll be overstuffed?

They say right there in the article that Rhino is basically a cameo in ASM2 and that Electro will be the main baddie.

I’m pretty sure Sony and Webb have a plan this time around, so I’m not worried that they’ll pull another SM3.

      • +1

  22. I would much rather see carnage than a sinister 6 movie. But not with harry as Venom. I HATE THAT

  23. I did not initially think the actor chosen was the right one to play Electro, but I must admit now he looks pretty cool and I am anxious to see this.
Next movie: can we have Scorpion and Mysterio, please?

    • Scorpion is very likely to happen because of Oscorp being a big deal, but not Mysterio.

Which is a shame because Mysterio is my 2nd favorite Spider-Man villain below Carnage.

  24. This franchise becoming a joke real fast…..

  25. without the availibilty of ghost rider or any of marvel’s other superheroes
marc webb is grasping at straws because unless MCU decides to integrate the rebooted spiderman into their universe then there is only one way for amazing spiderman to go down. “THE DRAIN”

    • You must be one of the people who believes Superman/Batman is a stupid idea, as well as JL never happening.

This is Spider-Man. He doesn’t need other heroes to take in a ton of money

      • Ignore him. At one point, his comments on all the Spider-Man articles stop being opinions and start being spam.

  26. Sinister 6 villains should be Electro, Rhino, Vulture, Doc Ock, Kraven, and Mysterio.

Lizard and Black Cat should be Pete’s allies in fighting them.

  27. In Spiderman 3 they should have The Gentleman and Norman Osborn trying to frame Parker by having the Chameleon acting as Spiderman. Spidey’s reputation is tarnished as Chameleon is robbing banks and beating up civilians (while dressed as Spiderman) In this movie Doc Ock should also be introduced and transformed. Chameleon dressed as Spiderman coud be responsible for Doc Ocks experiment going bad so this is why Ock hates spiderman. The end of the movie should have Green Goblin.

In Spiderman 4 they just need to introduce Mysterio and Kraven. Image that the movie starts with MJ as actress on a set that Quentin Beck is working on. His props/equipment cause a fire and people get hurt. He gets arrested. He goes to court and The Gentleman pays his legal fees in return for his services. The Gentleman sends Adrian Toomes a.k.a. The Vulture to go recruit Kraven since his half brother Chameleon is in prison. He persuades Kraven with the challenge of big game by showing him pics of Lizard and Spiderman.

So Spiderman 4 all the villains are in place and the movie is about The Genteman recruiting the villains then in the final act is the showdown

Also, I think for a side story, the villains should create the robot clones of Peters Parents and he is dealing with having them back in his life. Except he doesn’t know they are robots and neither does the audience until the end of the movie where we find out that the Sinister Six created them just to get closer to Peter. However, the robots evolve to have artificial intelligence and grow to love Peter as a real son so they help protect him at the end of the movie too.

  28. I could see Webb using Rhino like Nolan did with Scarecrow. A nuisance, but not a real threat. Rhino isn’t a character that you can base an entire movie around, but he is someone that you can use to develop characteristics of our hero, Spidey.

I’m excited to see how this universe unfolds. And I hope to see a movie universe incarnation of the Sinister Six. Plus, I’d like to see the anti-hero version of Venom and the sadistic Carnage play a role in this franchise at some point. But, for right now, I’m happy with the way Electro looks and that Gwen Stacy wears those skirts.

  29. Rhino’s bald head looks like it could use a can opener and a spin shine.
