‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Trailer: Peter Parker’s Greatest Battle Begins

Published 1 year ago by , Updated April 12th, 2014 at 2:43 am,

Sony has spent the last week hyping the official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and it’s here at last.

As you can see, the battle between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx) is almost a footnote in the first theatrical preview, with the main attraction being what Pete uncovers about his long-gone father’s (Campbell Scott) research for Oscorp Industries – and what the return of Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) heralds for our intrepid web-slinging hero.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Spider-Man story without dealing with Pete’s attempts to juggle the responsibilities of his everyday life with being a superhero and having to constantly deal with new threats, be they glorified lab experiments gone (Wrong? Right?) or Russian Mafia enforcers (Paul Giamatti) wielding machines guns and high-tech Rhino robot suits. No wonder his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) acts casual about the police raining gunfire down on Pete; by his standards, that’s practically a slow day at work.

The official synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reminds us that all of Spidey’s enemies – be they the newly-transformed Green Goblin or the mysterious figure who paid Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) a visit in his jail cell in the Amazing Spider-Man mid-credits sequence (who makes a brief appearance in the trailer) – have a very important quality in common: their connection to Oscorp, Richard Parker’s old work place.

Indeed, as the sequel’s co-screenwriter Alex Kurtzman previously explained, the second installment is not only focused on expanding the series’ mythos, but also probing deeper into Peter’s issues about his past, which were left (intentionally) unresolved in the first movie. If Kurtzman and co-writers Roberto Orci (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jeff Pinkner (Fringe) prove able to tie all these elements together, then Amazing Spider-Man 2 could be quite the satisfying comic book movie sequel (and, dare I say, maybe the best Spider-Man film released to date).

Director Marc Webb, on his end, looks to have delivered a superhero movie that is bigger and better than his previous entry in the genre on seemingly every level (storytelling, acting, visual style, etc.). Most importantly, he seems to have gotten a better handle on how to blend the human core of the film – Pete’s quest to find a sense of identity and deal with life as a young adult – with the requisite 3D effects and blockbuster spectacle, compared to his work on the first Amazing Spider-Man installment.

Plus, the best may be yet to come, as certain Easter Eggs in the trailer (Who else caught the Vulture wings and Doc Ock’s arms in the Oscorp hallway?) allude to more exciting developments in the future. On that note: those “rumors” about a Sinister Six villain team-up somewhere down the line are starting to look more like fact, at this point…

  1. I’m just hoping that somewhere soon down the line we get the real Venom, and along with him, I’m really hoping we get Carnage. Now THAT’S a good villain, pure super powered psychopathic mass murderer.

    • Carnage would be awesome to have. This trailer looks really amazing. I know people say it might get to convoluted with villains, but I mean we shouldn’t say anything bad until we see it. LOOKS AMAZING!!

      • Venom and Carnage down the line….meh maybe…Venom maybe if they do him justice. Carnage….nah NO then you have to bump the movie to like a PG 13 and here in Europe where i live it would be like 16 years viewing……Dont forget that Carnage is a mass murderer…how are you going to get that persona on screen….maybe chance who the character is for the movie…only that would work.

  2. This looks amazing, no pun intended. Im blown away right now.

  3. I really hope the special effects (specially the Spider Man ones) look better than this in the actual movie…

  4. Wait, the tiger from Life of Pi is in this movie? Lame.

  5. I really like this trailer. Seems like Webb made the movie bigger and flashier. Seems like he included alot more daytime scenes also. Like someone said, it looks like a real comic book movie. Like a spiderman cartoon brought to life. It looks awesome.

  6. After watching the trailer… Is Electro appearing in this one? —
Ok and THREE villains in a film, but thats a Spiderman 3 SIN right?

I dunno, one thing is having a lot of superheroes in one film a la Avengers, but having too many villains, and a tease to a future six villain vs Spiderman match… its not that attractive to me.

    • As long as Electro is the main, Rhino second, and Goblin small originish story it might be alright with 3

      • By Rhino 2nd I mean he gets less screen time but still impactful.

    • Batman Begins managed to have 3 villains and it managed that brilliantly.

  7. Very interesting trailer, the cast should be good and has such an epic scale. Hope the script is witty and written well. Complaint is Sony Image works very disappointing Visual Effects work.

  8. Something cool i just noticed at the end of the trailer when Spiderman is dodging Electro’s lightning bolts. That its not just lightning bolts but that Electro himself is the lightning bolt. Pretty cool.

  9. I’ll be honest, I was not impressed with this trailer.

Three villains has been shown to be a bad idea. Harry now has an emo haircut. Inception Bwaams. I’ve already seen The Green Goblin before, so I’m not interested in seeing him again. I don’t think Andrew Garfield is a good dramatic actor in this (granted it’s still just a trailer)

I had hang-ups with the first Amazing Spider-man (strongly disagreed with a reboot so soon, so I never went to see it, still have not to this day), so I probably will not see this either.

But hey, if you guys are excited then I hope it’s good and you enjoy it.

  10. Is it just me or do the CGI look kinda outdated by a decade or so? Especially Spidey looks like a rubberdoll.

    • I agree that the CGI looks kind of crappy, hope that they improve that by the time the film rolls out

  11. I bet AMS 3 will have Goblin + Sinister Six after Spider Man, and in this movie he defeats all the villains, and they want some kind of revenge on him.

  12. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that the three villains thing is gonna hurt the film. I get an Empire Strikes Back type of vibe from this trailer, so if the film ends with a cliff hanger, or as long as they don’t try to wrap the entire story up in this film; I think it’ll play out well.

The visual effects are sketchy though, no doubt about that.

  13. Good trailer, but the amount of new villains and other characters does have me worried. Not supporting Spiderman 3, but at least one of those villains was already established in the first two movies (Harry Osborn). Also, do we really need to see Doc Ock again? We already had a great interpretation of the villain on screen, I would prefer to see more new villains. Using Green Goblin and Venom again is understandable since one is such a popular villain and the other was screwed up the last time.

As for the CGI, not very good, but I’m sure it will look fine once the movie comes out (same thing with the first movie). I’m looking forward to this and I WANT this to be good, but the amount of new characters just makes me skeptical (especially since we were promised that Electro would be the MAIN focus of the film, the Rhino would be a side character, and there might be some cameo’s). Here, clearly Green Goblin has a prominent role in the film (like he’s saved for the third act, like Venom from Spiderman 3. Again, this has me worried). Like I said, not a bad trailer, I’m just skeptical.

  14. Looks epic,cant wait.

  15. All people who are saying we’ve seen these villains before have to realize it’s a reboot. I get it. I want to see knew villains too, but their gonna go for villains that the general public are more familiar/are really interesting and can draw a crowd. Now I know this is all subjective from person to person, but there is a overall consensus on what villains will draw people in. Just saying.

    • I have no problem seeing a new version of Green Goblin somewhere down the line, but I’m not sure about this film (a LOT of villains). Also, with the Doc Ock tease, is that character really necessary to see again? He was perfect in Spiderman 2, I would prefer to see a new villain over that character.

  16. Guess robots and power armor clad villains are going to be the fad now….

  17. The vulture and Octopus suits could simply be easter eggs. I personally feel it would be very lazy to have 2 villains have the same origin story (ie. got their tech from the same source).

    • I don’t know Easter Eggs are usually hidden and these seem to be out there as an advertisement for something. And even if these pictures are just fanboy bait, Rhino and what I guess is some version of the Goblin both have a mech look to them.

    • It’s exactly part of the post credit scene and it’s also supposed to have vemons symbiont as well

  18. that spidey costume is terrible. Especially just for the 2nd movie.they shoulda saved the 1st film costume to be in the corners for the 2nd.

  19. Way to much CGI, I love The last One more already. I’m only looking forward to the answers to his parents death that the first one keep teasing us about. Plus, seeing how the death of Gwen Stacy will happen, this will be Epic! I do like the little tease of the ” Sinster Six” in this with Dr Ock Arms, and Vulture Wings, That was really Cool. One day team up with Venom, Spidey will have to take on Carnage, I hope it happens in Spider-man 3.

  20. There’s a reason Ultimate Marvel is flaming out. Much as people liked the “more grounded in reality” style for a while, the death toll of reality kept mounting, with both beloved heroes and villains biting the bullet far too quickly.
Sometimes a little unrealism is exactly the reason why people still prefer to turn to the original DC and Marvel universes

  21. Anybody notice when the doors open at 1:22 there are 6 doors? and also follow the daily bugel at 0:40

  22. I want the Kingpin to be the mastermind behind the Sinister Six, am I alone on this?

  23. Spider Gear Solid

  24. #SpiderGearSolid

    • Eff off with your hashtags. This ins’t twitter.

  25. Wheres Scorpion at

    • they have to hold back some; there’s already a 3rd and 4th movie in pre production for this franchise, Sony already announced the planned release dates

  26. I have a bad feeling that Gwen Stacy dies the same way like she did in the comic book, look at the trailer on… 2:06 to 2:08, the trailer shows gwen first, and then Spidey uses his web to catch something, possibly Gwen? I don’t know..jeez, these trailers.

  27. Did anyone else notice Mary Jane Winston in the trailer at the 2:05 mark her back is turned to the Camera. But it is her she is wearing the jean jacket from the stills they took during filming. But was this an oversight and they just missed it in the editing room or is she back in the movie.

    • Who is “Mary Jane Winston”?

If you mean Mary Jane Watson: who knows, she might get a cameo appearance in 2, but the producers have already announced her main storyline is not planned until the 3rd film. By the way if you are not aware: Sony has already announced the 3rd and 4th films are in pre production and have planned release dates for them, so this franchise (barring any major world changing events) is going to be at least 4 films.

As it stands, the next film (#2) will see Spider-Man battling the threats of Electro (Jamie Foxx) and The Rhino (Paul Giamatti); it will include subplots involving a superhero prison (Ravencroft), Peter’s friendship with Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), relationship with Gwen, and the introduction of mastermind industrialist Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper). Mary Jane, if she shows up at all, will not be for anything more than a passing comment to show she exists. These events take place prior to her relationship with Peter.

  28. Jamie Foxx is going to steal every scene he is in.

  29. Green Goblin looks really really really laaame in this movie :(
He’s not even green and he has spiky yellow hair and remember those rumors that said that “Green Goblin will wear black armor and a bluetooth device thingy that looks like the traditional pointy ears and will wear no mask”…well they seem to be true. Rhino looks lame and Electro looks…meh. I want to be excited but even William Dafoe’s Goblin looks amazing compared to this new goblin.
