New ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ International Trailer: A Deadly Supervillain Team-Up

Life is good for Peter Parker. He’s had an entire movie to get through the initial teething problems of his powers, and as the new international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 begins he finds himself loved by all as the hero of New York City. Best of all, he has a girlfriend who knows his secret identity and is (mostly) OK with his web-slinging ways.

As every superhero eventually learns, however, the higher you fly the further there is to fall, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will introduce a collection of new threats to test his limits. There’s Electro himself, whose highly destructive electricity-based powers are shown tearing various pieces of Manhattan apart. There’s Peter’s friend Harry Osborn and his not-so-friendly supervillain counterpart Green Goblin. Rounding out the list of main adversaries in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is Russian mobster Aleksei Sytsevich AKA The Rhino.

The sequel will also delve a little deeper into Peter’s history and offer some new information about his past and heritage, with both Aunt May and Harry Osborn seemingly playing key roles in uncovering this mystery. Between this and the three (or more) villains being introduced, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 won’t suffer from Spider-Man 3 Syndrome.

The international trailer returns once again to the clock tower that appears to be the arena for a showdown between Spider-Man and Green Goblin. The fact that Gwen Stacey is also present has led to much speculation that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will recreate an iconic moment from the comics, but don’t be too surprised if things play out a little differently in the adaptation.

The emphasis on Peter Parker’s various enemies teaming up suggests that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will also act as a precursor to the upcoming Sinister Six spin-off movie. Combined with the Venom spin-off and the two additional Amazing Spider-Man sequels still to come after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this means that in total there are four other movies in the franchise currently in development.

While ambitious, this isn’t all that surprising; Spider-Man spins money as well as webs and the movies so far have made over $3.2 billion at the box office alone, taking the top spot as the #1 most lucrative property that Sony Pictures has ever owned.

  1. Its a free country. Anybody that does not want to see this movie, nobody’s gonna force you. But, please, guys stop telling people that are actually excited to see it (ME) not to bother. Not Cool.

  2. Spiderman looks too skinny and young, prefer the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi version. Also prefere the photography and camera action/style in the Tobey/Sam movies. But I will buy this DVD and give it a watch, because after all it is Marvel. Incidently, Rhino does not look like much, but Electro is almost kinda cool.

    • Ultimate Spiderman is supposed to be skinny and young.

      • 616 Spider-man too, depending on who is drawing him. Beside that, he has never been bulky.

    • it may be a marvel story, but technically its Sony. nothing to do with marvel entertainment, so don’t hold it on the same grounds as real marvel movies.

  3. It looks really great – alas – Sony are trying to play catch-up with the Marvel/Disney Universe & success. Also the mess with Spider-Man 3 done alot of damage.
I just wish the designs were more like the classic comic book look with the villians.
Everyone wants to see Spidey where he belongs…100% with Marvel.
I still love Spidey – and will be lovin this new one loads – would never ‘boycott’ Spider-Man – but I get what folks are meaning. We all just want Spider-Man treated with respect…and done right.

    • I think Spidey has been done right. Both in the Raimi and the Webb versions and I think this movie looks awesome. Judging from the ticket sales, I’m not the only one.

But when you say give it back to Marvel so it can be done right, are you talking about the same studio which gave us The Mandarin?

Is changing characters and scenarios ok? Than I don’t see the problem with Foxs X-Men or Sonys Spidey. Is it not ok? Than I don’t see why Marvel is more likely to “get it right”.

  4. Wow a Marvel movie with actual….VILLAINS and the VILLAINS actually dialogue with hero. This trailer looks awesome and has more action than the entire Ironman 3 and Thor 2 flicks. Nice job Sony. Plz don’t give the rights back Marvel/Disney. I enjoy smart action and character development and an actual story in my movies.

  5. Looks like Electro is attacking an inside of a plane, who is on it? And who gave him that suit he’s wearing when he is attacking, Norman Osborn? Harry? Doc Ock? Is Harry feeling alright when he is telling Peter about the pictures his fathers company is taking of him? He kind of looks like he is on something (look at his eyes).

  6. Of all the trailers we’ve seen so far, this looks like it has the most polished CGI effects. Really looking forward to seeing this in May. However, still not keen on the Rhino mech suit, otherwise it looks good.

  7. It looks really great! Amazing Spider-Man 2 is really amazing. I am excited to watch it on May and I already have a ticket from AMC with a low price.
