‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Super Bowl Trailer: Time to Pay the Price

UPDATED: Check out the full extended Super Bowl trailer above!

Given The Avengers‘ $1.5 billion success in the global ticket sales and Phase 2 in full effect, with both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy set for release this year, sometimes it seems like Spider-Man has taken a back seat to Marvel Studios’ core superhero team. Ever since it was first announced, after Sony cancelled Spider-Man 4, Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man series has faced an uphill battle – tasked with telling an “untold” story just five years after director Sam Raimi concluded his critically acclaimed trilogy.

Despite the controversy (and complaints about the costume), The Amazing Spider-Man went on to gross over $700 million at the global box office – ensuring that Sony would continue to explore this new take on the web-slinging hero. As a result, the pressure was on for Webb to deliver in his follow-up, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which promises Peter Parker’s “Greatest Battle Begins” with the introduction of, not just one super villain, but the makings of a Sinister Six team-up (and a solo Venom movie). Now, thanks to Super Bowl Sunday, we’ve got our first glimpse at new Amazing Spider-Man 2 footage – including a better look at some of the “sinister” villains.

Amazing Spider Man 2 Super Bowl Trailer The Amazing Spider Man 2 Super Bowl Trailer: Time to Pay the Price

Earlier this week, Sony released Part 1 of the Super Bowl teaser trailer:

As that teaser made clear, it was not the entire Super Bowl trailer – meaning that the studio saved a small chunk to debut during the actual game, which you can now check out below:

In fact, most of the footage in this spot will already be familiar to fans who have seen the prior theatrical trailers and official images – e.g. Rhino’s Transformer-like helmet and foot stomp, Spidey slinging his way through an electric field, and ominous shots of Dane DeHaan as Harry Osbourne (and Green Goblin). Still, the 3:50 version does give us a few different glimpses to pore over.

Electro (Jamie Foxx) sets the stage for what fans can expect from the film’s story – asserting that there are consequences to Spider-Man’s heroism and that the time has come for Peter Parker to pay that price. Longtime fans of the series will likely have some idea of what that could mean; still, how it will all play out remains a mystery (at this point).

Obviously, the most noticeable piece of new video is Spider-Man’s highflying rescue of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) – leading into a cliffhanger ending that will have longtime fans buzzing.

NOTE: The rest of this post contains potential MAJOR SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If you do not want to be SPOILED click away now.

Fans are quickly assuming that the scene featured at the end of this teaser trailer was part of the scene that would feature the infamous death of Gwen Stacy. While that’s certainly a possibility, this could also be an attempt to make even the most die-hard Spider-Man fans assume they know “what comes next” only to be wowed by an eye-popping rescue. A rescue that would, sadly, only prolong the inevitable.

Update: In the meantime, enjoy these quick snapshots of the Green Goblin, as shown in the teaser (courtesy of reader “Michael J.”):

  1. only thing I’m going to say I dislike about the movie as of right now, is the Green Goblin(Or in my theory, It’s actually the guy that was staring at the Gobbie vials and it’s actually Hob Goblin :D )…I think they missed his character design by a long shot. He looks nothing close to the original. Which I usually don’t mind, as long as it resembles the original character in some way. But this design does not. Poor Gobbie, getting mistreated again. :(

    • Yes, I too was hoping for a blue jumpsuit with orange tunic and hood and scary orange zombie face flying around on a metal bat and throwing flaming pumpkins.

  2. Man they really screwed up rhino. What is it with Hollywood turning everything into robots?

    • Never read Ultimate Spider-Man I take it? That version of the character was basically a guy in a mech suit.

  3. The jokes at the beginning and end were pretty bad, but other than that, it’s looking pretty good.

    • that’s how all the jokes are for TASM. The first one was even worse. He was like… acting “stoned” in the other film. It was cringe-worthy.

That’s the reason I’m not too keen on seeing this.

  4. Everything about that looks cool enough except for the Electro-becomes-villain storyline. Talk about contrived.

Dane DeHaan is definitely the most compelling-looking element of this film, from what I’ve seen.

And the Peter-Aunt May jokes…eh, whatever.

    • I predicted the nerd-turned-villain-by-idolizing-the-hero cliche, i hate that aspect of it.

Also, you are spot on on those Aunt May-Peter jokes being… cringe-worthy.

Also also, I REALLLY dislike Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man with his Stuttering…

      • “Yeah Spider-man can be completely not nerdy and everything but god forbid he stutters”

  5. after watching the Cap trailer this feels like childs play…but it does look better then everything we have seen up to this point from Spidey 2

    • To me, it’s more like a kid who learns the hard way that he’s playing hero in an adult world. Electro’s motives threaten to undermine the seriousness of the corporate shenanigans, but depending on how much time we get to spend with Max Dillon and his insecurities, it could turn out alright. Marc Webb has said repeatedly that Electro is the main villain, so in spite of all the exposure the other villains are getting, we may get to spend a lot more time with Max Dillon than expected. The general audience will not know for sure until the movie hits though.

      • I forgot to include that the Cap trailer really does look fantastic.

  6. How did they get the doctor Mario music :P

  7. Wow, I just saw the whole movie by this long trailer, and the two best jokes about ‘Washing the Flag, and No Chimney, Whattttt?’ I love quick one 1/2 minute tops movie trailers. Anything longer just gives you too much away from the movie going experience.

  8. Just saw the tv spot during the Superbowl and he saves Gwen. Doesn’t look like she will meet her demise after all. (IMO of course)

    • AHAH! That’s what they want you to think!

      • I mean, he “saves” her in the comics too… As in, he catches her.

  9. Wow, what a trailer, looks absolutely fantastic. I can’t wait for this movie, I’m looking forward to this more than any other film this year, (including captain america 2)

  10. So Electro is trying to kill Spiderman because he couldn’t remember his name?
… Spiderman 3′s villains had more complexity than that.

    • @ jug mooe ,, Are you serious??

Hmm, something tells me there’s a chance they might add more dialogue to the storyline in the actual final 2 hour movie, ya know, more than what we’re shown in a 3 minute trailer. Most films tend to do this.

Talking about how complex characters are from a movie you haven’t even seen, that’s just plain stupid and ridiculous.

    • Stupid ! It’s edited .. Is this the first time you watching a trailer ? .. A trailer has “Cut Scenes” which makes u think things differently

  11. Lol i like spider-man and all but this looks bad. the weird music and the whole electro thing kinda reminds me of the Riddler from Batman Forever even his apartment looks the same and the whole nerd thing working for oscorp like Edward Nigma worked for Wayne Enterprises lmao and the bright colors

  12. And the jokes with Aunt May lol i’ll still see it tho its just weird looking thats all

  13. if you look at the background of the goblin picture, you see the glass dome that spidey brakes through when he grabs gwen. So i assume goblin dropped her

  14. Anyone who says they’re showing too much and continue to watch these things are lame.

    • *is

  15. On its own…this is a solid trailer. Looks like he saves gwen this time… could also be that he does lose her…cuz of his scream of anguish in the extended trailer.
In my opinion…they’re gonna let gwen live in this one…close off this trilogy with the Death of Gwen Stacy in part 3…which would include MJ…
The effects look good…the jokes are like bendis with Peter Parker…right way to go…

  16. Honestly, I really hate that they made Harry the Green Goblin instead of Norman.

  17. I feel like the trailer gave away too much. they tried to pack in all the money shots and jokes they had ready into the thing and l feel like l’ve already watched the film.

Here’s hoping they’ll actually render the CG by May.

like seriously next to no improvement from the previous trailers

  18. I think the Electro plot is shaping up pretty nicely actually. The character is supposed to be immensely powerful, but with confidence issues that make him drastically unstable. It looks to me like they’re going to play this up. I’m going to take a guess that Goblin will have a very small role. However, I’m fine with this because it seems Harry will have a deeply interwoven character arc throughout the film. I love the Goblin design, it’s suave, futuristic, and mad all at the same time. I really didn’t like the first film, but so far this is shaping up to be the best Spider-Man film of all time.

    • Dude you’ve barely even seen the Goblin with any clarity. How are you going to make any kind of insightful comment about him? He looks like a David Bowie robot from what I can see.

  19. Gwen falls and is presumed dead.

Comes back in the end to defeat Electro with a tank missile…. oh wait..

    • This isn’t The Dark Knight Rises!

  20. Someone tell me the same of the song in this trailer. Amazing.

    • *name

  21. The trailer looked okay. Nothing special and looks like the same formula. Might just wait until it hits the $2/$3 theaters

  22. So hokey!!

I was really really vocal with how much I loved the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailers before.
Now that I saw what Electro was all about and his cheesy anger because Peter forgot who he was, I don’t know if I can stomach another Campy run through a movie.

I’m dying over here ladies and gents, dying.

    • I agree.

  23. Really not a fan of this movie. They went with a more traditional look (which I don’t quite get because it’s now kind of a backstep) and Electro looks very flashly with all his FX but I hate Rhino (I don’t care if he is the “Ultimates” version, that doesn’t make it the best incarnation) and am not liking the Green Goblin either.

Based on my experience with the first movie, I think I will Redbox this one instead ;)

  24. This looks so epic! Spidey is my favorite marvel character.

    • Too bad this isn’t Marvel’s Spidey but Fox’s instead

      • The movie is produced by *Sony, Mongoose. But he’s still a Marvel character. Don’t be pretentious.

  25. Emma Stone’s contract runs up to 3 films. So we’ll see Gwen again in ASM3.
Then we’ll get MJ and the other spidery villains.
Can’t wait till May to watch it !

    • @Marvel Boy,

And that’s the information I was looking for. Emma Stone’s contract. That leaves two possibilities: Gwen survives this film, or Gwen dies but makes some other appearance in a subsequent film. (Clone Gwen Stacy?)

      As for the trailer, meh.

    • Probably some flashbacks as Peter has a mild guilt trip milliseconds before he gives MJ a sweet, sweet money shot. And I’m not talking about webshooters.

  26. Of course I’ll buy the DVD…it’s a super-hero movie! But I still like the Tobey M. Spidey better. Electro looks decent, though.

  27. I have to say: visually, this film looks beautiful. Colors everywhere, I may see it just because of that. It’s not filtered like Cap 2 (although Cap 2 will be a better film, I think)

    • Captain America simply sucks ! Ok

  28. Feels like i watched the whole movie by looking the first trailer on the list itself!!!

  29. PPL just straight up sound dumb when saying “I saw the whole movie in this trailer” or DUH “I hope they actually render the CG by the time the movie comes out” DUUUH!!

we ALL know you guys will be the first ones to pre-order their tickets a month b4 the movie opens and the first in line opening night!!

To all the peeps that feel they know this movie and that the CGI is that damn bad, I HAVE A VERY NOVEL IDEA: stop coming to a movie website to watch all the trailers only then to bash it saying the studio gave away too much info! JUST DONT WATCH THE TRAILERS!! Then the ppl that really want watch the trailer and read constructive comments DO NOT have to read or even waste time skimming thru all the comments left by a bunch of MOANERS and WHINERS…
