While already hard at work prepping for the sequel to his summer smash, The Amazing Spider-Man, director Marc Webb has also been spending plenty of time promoting the DVD/Blu-Ray of the film, which was released on November 9. While promoting the release, Webb and his effects team recently revealed that the first film contained several secret clues, or “Easter Eggs” that could reveal details about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This of course, got the rumor mill churning, and got fans wondering what else Webb may be hiding.

Leading to the sequel’s 2014 release date, Webb is certainly keeping plenty of secrets but we’re hearing unofficial talk that a new, “more traditional” Spidey suit could appear in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Nuke The Fridge is reporting the rumor (which they got from “a source close to the production” of the film), who claims that Spider-Man will don a crime-fighting costume that is different from the one he wore in The Amazing Spider-Man.

The decision to change the suit would likely be in reaction to many die-hard fans’ requests for a suit more faithful to the original comics. Fans often think their outcries, protests and suggestions go unheard, but a suit update could mean that Webb, and other leaders in the reboot, are at least willing to take fan opinion into consideration.

‘Spider Man’ (2002) vs. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012) suit

Of course, Spider-Man has worn a lot of different suits over the years in the comic books but the costume many fans are calling for could, as a result, end up resembling the one Tobey Maguire sported in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Fans tend to favor that suit, which featured brighter tones, and consider it to be more traditional than the one Andrew Garfield donned in the reboot.

That all said, anyone who follows pre-production movie news knows that “sources close to the production” are often debunked – meaning that, for the time being, we wouldn’t throw out those Amazing Spider-Man action figures in hopes of dramatically updated toys. Slight updates to superhero suits generally occur from movie to movie (just look at the evolution of the Dark Knight’s batsuit in Nolan’s trilogy or the ever-evolving Iron Man armor) but, until we hear something more official, this is little more than hearsay. It’s certainly possible that whatever updates the Spider-Man suit will see in the sequel could push it a bit closer to the “traditional” look of the character but without an official comment or photo, we’re not convinced that it’ll see a massive overhaul. After all, the entire Amazing Spider-Man reboot is based on the “Ultimate” comic book series’ version of the character – which is anything but “traditional.”

At this point, all we can do at this point is speculate about what the updated suit could look like, assuming that this rumor is true. However, regardless of how you might feel about The Amazing Spider-Man suit, we can all probably agree that Webb should scrap those silver shoes Garfield wore in the film!

Let us know which suit your prefer in the comments below and don’t forget to check out The Amazing Spider-Man available now on DVD and Blu-Ray and catch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when it swings to a theatre near you on May 2, 2014.

  1. Always a need to sell new toys…..this is all marketing people…nothing to see….move along.

  2. New suit should be good,
also im not trying to be racist but isnt electro white?

    • I SO THOUGHT THAT BUT DID NOT WANT TO SAY IT!!! and NO it is not racial! I DO NOT Think they should make a character black if he was not so in the comics!! sorry to say so

      • Depends. They made Nick Fury black and nobody cares and they’d need to change Electro’s origin story, seriously I don’t want to have to watch that with a non-marvel friends going “Yep, that’s how it happens, yep I know it’s stupid. Everybody who reads Marvel either knows it’s stupid or happens to be as crazy as Electro himself”

        • In the Ultimate Universe Fury is black.

And as far as a black guy playing a white guy, or a white guy playing black, or whatever combination you want to use, Kingpin was black in Daredevil, white in the comics, Mr. Duncan was a good Kingpin, it did not matter that he was black.

Jaime Fox is a great actor, and if the plot and script is good for TASM2, then I have faith that nobody will care or complain if he is played by a black guy.

      • They made Heimdal black in Thor and white-power kicked up a stink over that too.. but it makes no difference. You shouldn’t really care, being white isn’t a part of his character, it doesn’t make any real difference to his character at all. Its not like if he’s black he can’t be the same sort of character..

        It doesn’t matter at all.

        • This. Unless race is somehow inherent to the character it doesn’t matter, especially for characters that aren’t so iconic in our culture as a particular race (making Electro black is certainly easier than making Superman black, for example).

    • You’re not being racist. But I think he was black in the Ultimate version. They seem to be pulling alot of elements from the Ultimate version though.

  3. I’d like a more traditional costume in the sequel. Give him the red around his waist, separate the red and blue on his gloves and arms. Also get rid of the red line going down his legs. And though they weren’t that noticeable in the movie, get rid of the shoes.

    • I don’t think that the shoes need to go off, just to make them red so nobody notice the difference, and so it combines with the costume.

  4. I liked the suits from both the Raimi and Webb films, but neither one looked remotely like a cash-strapped teenager had made it…designed yes, made no. I thought Maguire did an excellent job as a troubled, frustrated Parker but was not playful enough. Garfield joked more in costume but often seemed to be an ass as Parker. I did enjoy his relationship with Stacy much more than Maguire’s with Watson…much more natural. Both the Maguire high school setting and spider bite scenes were better than those in TASM. I found the Green Goblin to be appropriately creepy, if often a bit over the top. Dr. Octopus was excellent. The Lizard was the weakest component of TASM for me.

In short, while both versions had their problems, I enjoyed watching them. I look forward to seeing what the new costume changes AND what it keeps the same…or to what it hearkens back.

  5. I LIKED EVERYTHING about the 2012 version of spiderman better than the little kid movies of the early 2000′S I just think TAM was an OVERALL better film, and the character Garfield portrayed was overall better than Tobey maguire’s portrayal! GARFIELD IS PP

    • I’m TALKING in CAPS, therefore I’M RIGHT!

Honestly The Lizard was the only thing I enjoyed about TASM, since he’s my favorite SM villain. It all was basically SM 1 remixed with an attempt at Nolan’s gritty realistic setting, a pretty boy playing Peter, and false advertising about an “untold story” that never occured in the film. Toby will always be the better Peter; he was more relatable, believable, and likeable than Garfields douchy portrayal of Peter. I never once believed he was a nerd who was an outcast during TASM, in SM 1 Maguire fitted in PERFECTLY as a socially akward nerd. Probably the dumbest thing Garfield’s Peter did was reveal he was Spider-Man to Gwen on like, what, their first dinner together; whereas Maguire accidently revealed it at the climax of the second movie.

      • So you’ve never been a social outcast in high school then? Because Garfield played that more realistically than Maguire did. If you went through similar issues as high school outcasts, you’d have known that.

      • No. It’s not. People need to learn that just because it’s a bit “darker” doesn’t mean it’s Nolan’s Batman. Spider-Man has been in dark situations before but no one seems to remember those. Also, Peter isn’t supposed to be ugly or extremely unnattractive. He’s handsome but can sometimes just be too damn weird.

      • IMO maguire was a short stumpy spiderman and didnt move like spiderman should. Garfield has the lanky fluid movement like you would think spiderman should.
TASM version spiderman was much more spiderman than the rami version. Again in my opinion. The lizard felt abit weak to me yes.
The one thing they did right in TASM was put Gwen in it since that was peter’s first true love.
Again its like taking 80′s batman and comparing it to nolan batman. one felt cartoonish and one felt gritty. Personal preference

        But again thats my opinion

  6. For everyone who is crying toy sales, have you been to the toy aisle lately? There are already multiple different Iron Mans, Thors, Batmans, Captain Americas, and Spider-Mans. If they wanted to make a new Spider-Man toy they would just make it.

  7. I thought the suit looked pretty cool aside from the running shoes he was wearing.

  8. I would like to see spider-woman,Kraven,Scorpion, and doc ock in webbers version

  9. Bak Cat is a must.

  10. He should keep his suit. His new suit is awesome. I like the traditional one too but I think this suit is great for the movie it fits the whole tone of it much better than the original suit would.

  11. I like the 2012 suit way more than the 2002 one. They shouldn’t change it too much. But, since Electro is the villian,it gave me one thought: Spidey might wear the Electro proof suit near the end.

  12. Definitely the one in The Amazing Spider-Man. That suit rocks

  13. Garfield’s suit was designed by Cirque du Soleil. I’ll take Ditko over Cirque du Soleil any day.

  14. I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon and compare the two suits (even though I love both movies).

I never noticed how sleek Tobey’s suit looked until I saw that picture up there comparing the two side by side. It looks so smooth and clean. The silver webbing, and (especially) the silver Spider on the chest make it look ultra sleek. TOOOO sleek. I personally love the suit in TASM. It looked perfect, imo. If you watch the special features on the blu-ray, they explain why they did the shoe thing, etc.

I would personally love for them to keep the suit the way it is. Maybe some small changes, but not completely change it. At least keep the black line webbing the way it is. And the colors the same.

Anyway, I watched TASM yesterday again, and loved it even more. I have faith the sequel will surpass it as the story of Electro, his parents, Oscorp, The Lizard (who I can’t wait to see again), and Uncle Ben’s killer unfold. I think TASM2 will be even better then TASM, just like Spider-Man 2 surpassed Spider-Man. I personally glad that they left mystery for the rest of the trilogy. I’m surprised people have complained about it.

    • PeoPle complained about it because the trailers for TAS (Not TAS2) promised an untold story that wasn’t delivered. It was false advertising. Don’t get me wrong, I love TAS, but Sony falsely advertised it and that negatively impacted the average viewer’s opinion of it.

  15. Just make it brighter and make the lines more like it traditionally is (i.e. fix the front ah…”crotch” area), take off the silver and make the eyes white/silvery once more. And it’ll be good as gold!

  16. I am still believe that his suit will constantly be changing. He is still starting off in his hero career and, as with Iron Man, Spidey’s suit should evolve as he becomes more experienced. (Plus his suits keep getting torn up so he has to perhaps consider changing some of the design every now and then.)

  17. I want the giant white oval bug eyes! That’s my iconic Spiderman

  18. The only problem I have with the TASM suit is the same thing I have with Superman’s new one: I draws too much attention to the crotch. That and maybe the boot soles look strange. As for Electro being black. I really don’t care. Nick Fury being black worked out great. No problem there. The only problem I have is when they kill off existing characters to replace them with politically correct ones. Why can’t they just come up with new ones?
As for the second film. They need to introduce Felicia Hardy and Norman Osborne. Also the Hobgoblin would be a good prelude to the Green Goblin. But after the Lizard being in the first one, Kraven would be a natural next step.

    • Sorry, Electro is already casted. Not likely to see Felicia Harding although interesting if history serves me he doesn’t meet her till after Gwen’s death but before he marries MJ. Right now, Norman hasn’t been casted either which means either it’s been done in secret, they already have someone in mind but the role is very, very small or he won’t be in the sequel possibly saving him for the 3rd film. I’ve always found that if people complain about a costume’s crotch area maybe they try to not focus on the crotch area themselves. I’ve watched the movie 10 times already and not once did I pay any attention to the crotch area, how? Because I’m not interested in his crotch area so chances are no matter what they do to the crotch area the same people complaining about it will continue to look there regardless what’s done to it. Try focusing on the whole costume not one area

  19. I knew this would happen the moment Electro was confirmed as the villain, hahaha!

The rubber suit. It’s the only way Spider-Man could actually beat Electro in a serious fight. The first time he took Electro on, he was defeated. That’s well known from WAAAAAAAY back in the early Amazing Spider-Man comics. The 2nd time he fought him, he wore rubber gloves and won. Later on down the line, Peter made a rubber suit for any Electro battle

  20. Oh come on i am sick of funboys! For cryin out loud let the director do his job. For once!

  21. This is good news. I liked Maguire’s Spidey costume more Garfield’s. Hopfully the same will apply to Superman in a sequel after MOS if it does well.

  22. I didn’t really care much for this spiderman movie. It just wasn’t that good IMO. However, the costume was exceptionally awful, especially the yellow eyes, which I believe were made from sun glass lenses. That was both awful and just stupid. He looked jaundice for goodness sake!!! Awful just awful!!!!

    • I liked the shape of the eyes though, very Ditko-esque whereas the Raimi costume eyes were more McFarlane-esque (not bad by any means).

When I saw set photos of this new suit, I wasn’t very pleased. But then I watched the movie and it looked so much better in motion

  23. TO BE HONEST FILM MAKERS DID A GOOD JOB WITH SPIDER-MAN’S MOVEMENTS THAT HALFWAY THROUGH THE MOVIE I STOPPED NOTICING THE DIFFERENCE IN COSTUME

  24. ME TOO!

  25. Personally I think that if you want to distant yourself from the old films, don’t make a suit that’s more similar to the one used in the old films, even if it’s more “accurate”.

Just look at Nolan’s Batman-suit, successfully using a completely new look.

And my 2 cents on the discussion about who’s the better Spider-Man, I would say Andrew Garfield, looks younger, leaner, acts more like a modern day “nerd” would. Trust me, I know.

  26. Nolan’s batsuit in TDK & TDKR sucked imo. I liked the one in Batman Begins more.

  27. I like the new costume better. The fabric seems a little more realistic for a kid from queens, than tobey’s. i mean it’s rubber.. did he have access to a factory that could mold that sucker for him? doubtful. and for the record why does it matter? it still symbolizes spiderman regardless of what tint the webs on his suit are. Batman has had plenty of different takes on the bat suit. no one freaks, he’s still got the cowl and cape, just like spiderman has red and blue with a spider on his chest.

Webb your kicking some ass, keep it up

  28. i for one thought the eyes looked better on maguire’s suit in the original trilogy but the overall design of the suit in TASM was the best but if they could somehow mixed the two that would be awesome.

  29. and the spider emblem on garfield’s suit should stay the same.
